Johnny Depp Flops Again, ‘Captain America’ Sequel Rises Past its Predecessor

20 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” eked out a small lead over Fox’s “Rio 2” at the Friday box office. The superhero pic looks to win the weekend in this year’s second three-peat (after “The Lego Movie”).

The “Captain America” sequel earned $9.6 million, just over the animated movie’s $9.2 million, which should keep growing as kids hit theaters over the Easter weekend.

Warner Bros.’ new entry “Transcendence” was no match for the epic battle of the sequels, the second tightest race of the year following last weekend’s close showdown. The Johnny Depp-starrer came in at a disappointing fourth place with $4.8 million, making it the actor’s fourth flop in a row. Another newcomer, Sony’s “Heaven Is for Real” exceeded expectations by rising to $7.9 million.

With a cume of $184.5 million, “The Winter Soldier” overlapped its predecessor, “The First Avenger,” which hauled in $176.7 million domestically in its lifetime. »

Review: Picturesque, Patience Testing 'The Italian Key'

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

There are moments, while watching a movie for the first time, when you feel like your attention span is being stretched. It's normal, it happens all the time, and in this day and age it's more rare if you're not thinking about five things at once than if you're just thinking about one or two. Roger Ebert once said that a sign of a truly great film is when it makes you completely forget about everything, and glues you to the screen from start to finish. It's great when you feel truly invested in the story, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop you from watching how it ends. On the other hand, some movies make you wish for just about any kind of disaster – electrical power failures, building fires, hurricanes – to stop you from getting to the end. Yes, some movies stretch the attention span as if it »

Once in a Lifetime 'The Hateful Eight' Live Read with "Tarantino superstars!"

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Some three weeks back over chili cheese fries, Quentin Tarantino suggested to his buddy, interviewer Elvis Mitchell, that he might want to do a live read of his first-draft screenplay of "The Hateful Eight." Director Jason Reitman has been staging Hollywood classics at Film Independent at Lacma for the past three years, including Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs." Needless to say, Mitchell and his team made it happen.  "I'm wondering why I thought this was a good idea three weeks ago," admitted a nervous Tarantino as he doffed his black cowboy hat to a crowd of revved-up fans and Hollywood hipsters downtown at the refurbished United Artists Theatre at the Ace Hotel. "We've been rehearsing this for the last three days." He also warned that nobody else will ever see the final chapter of this typically verbose five-part western, which plays like a twisted post-Civil War sequel to "Django Unchained. »

Flash Gordon - 1pm, Film4

Knowingly silly, with corny performances and unconvincing special effects, you have to simply go along with the ride rather than cynically pick holes in the wacky plot with Flash (Sam J Jones) attempting to save the planet from the villainous Emperor Ming (Max von Sydow).

Despicable Me - 2.15pm, ITV2

With his status as the world's greatest supervillain under threat, Gru (Steve Carell) plans to steal the moon with the help of his diminutive yellow Minions, who steal the show with the best gags.

One of the original disaster movies, Paul Newman and Steve McQueen try to avoid being fried while attempting ambitious stunts when an electrical fault causes a fire in the tallest building in the world on its opening night.

Warning: This thread will contain spoilers that some readers may wish to avoid

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swung into UK cinemas this week and already looks to be another box office hit for the web-slinging superhero franchise.

The dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man now fits Andrew Garfield like a comfortable pair of shoes, but there's still big challenges to face in the form of Jamie Foxx's Electro and a Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) who's fast descending into darkness.

There are also big twists and turns, including one big shocker that will leave Spidey fans stunned. Marc Webb and Dane DeHaan talk to Digital Spy about the specifics above, but we want to know what you thought of the film and it's big plot turns.

Give Amazing Spider-Man 2 a rating out of five in our poll, and leave your thoughts on the movie in the space below. Again, »

Quentin Tarantino’s Still Working on ‘The Hateful Eight’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After the script of Quentin Tarantino’ s “The Hateful Eight” was leaked in January, the director said he had “no desire to make it.” Well, it’s safe to say he’s reconsidered. At Film Independent’s staged reading of “The Hateful Eight” on Saturday at Downtown L.A.’s Ace Hotel, Tarantino said he was working on a second draft and a third would also come.

“This is the first draft,” he clarified. Tarantino noted that the final chapter, chapter five titled “Black Night, White Hell,” has been rewritten and “this is the only time you’ll see” this version.

In a black cowboy hat and western shirt, the director introduced in order of appearance “the Tarantino All-Stars,” all alums of his previous films: Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren, James Parks as the driver O.B., Kurt Russell as bounty hunter John Ruth also known as “The Hangman, »

Hop recap: A rabbit knocks stuff over

Russell Brand as the Easter Bunny, chewy sweets over chocolate. Nothing about Hop - which is being shown on Channel 4 at 6:10pm tonight - has any spring in its step, says Stuart Heritage

Chances are you haven't fully forgiven Channel 4 for not showing Elf last Christmas. And rightly so personally speaking I still can't watch Channel 4 or look at the number four or think about whatever Kevin McCloud might be doing right now without experiencing a great surge of resentment. But that's Ok. Channel 4 ruined Christmas, but it might have saved Easter.

Locke review 'bold and evocative'

6 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Tom Hardy proves he can act in a minor key in this compelling portrait of a man in transit and in crisis

Till now, Tom Hardy's best-known performances have tended to project the image of the movie star most likely to headbutt someone on the red carpet. I'm not thinking just of his unintelligibly deranged Batman villain Bane, but also of his extraordinary lead in Bronson, playing the notorious British prison hard case like a roaringly theatrical circus strongman. His soft-spoken protagonist in Locke is entirely different, yet there's still a touch of the excess that you associate with Hardy for Ivan Locke is a man who lives, as his name suggests, with an excessive degree of control.

Steven Knight's film starts with Locke, a Welsh construction professional, leaving a Birmingham building site in his BMW which is where he stays for the rest of the film, driving and making phone calls. »

Women bridge gender gap as French film embraces a new nouvelle vague

7 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

As a festival of Gallic cinema opens in the UK, women both on screen and behind the camera are now in France's cultural vanguard

Half a century has passed since a group of mostly young and almost exclusively male directors electrified the culture-starved, postwar public with what would become known as nouvelle vague films.

Using handheld cameras and with a shortage of both money and celluloid, François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Éric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette among others created a golden age of French cinema.

X-men: Days Of Future Past WonderCon Panel Recap Featuring Simon Kinberg and New Footage

7 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

At WonderCon 2014, 20th Century Fox presented select footage from their upcoming sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.  Of course there was the big white elephant in the room – which everyone chose to ignore/avoid (the panel was curiously the only one without any audience questions).  The focus was strictly on the film itself.  Writer/Producer Simon Kinberg was on hand to discuss adapting the beloved comic, getting time travel ‘right’ and making-up for X-Men: The Last Stand.  For the full recap of the footage shown and bullet point highlights of the Q&A, hit the jump. Much of the ‘new’ X-Men footage screened can be found in the ‘opening battle scene’ currently making the rounds on the Internet.  You can see that here, if you so choose.  The footage screened for WonderCon attendees covered a bit more of this beginning sequence -- as the various B-level X-Men (Ice Man, Blink, »

“What would it actually be like if you were in the eye of a tornado.”  At WonderCon 2014, Warner Brothers presented select footage from their upcoming found footage release Into the Storm.  You’ve probably seen a teaser for the film already – and if not, see it here.  The under-the-radar film concerns a group of extreme storm chasers who document the ‘storm-of-the-century’ when it hits a small town.  Basically it’s ‘Twister On Steroids’. Filmmaker Steven Quale (Final Destination 5) and stars Richard Armitage (The Hobbit trilogy), Arlen Escarpeta (Friday the 13th), Jeremy Sumpter (Peter Pan) & Max Deacon (I, Anna) were on hand to discuss the intense shoot, the found footage genre and ol’ Twister (aside: isn’t it odd how that Jan De Bont flick has become somewhat of a cult classic in recent years).  For a full recap of the footage shown and bullet point highlights of the Q&A, »

The biggest surprise at WonderCon today was 20th Century Fox’s presentation of exclusive new footage from their upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic The Secret Service being directed by Matthew Vaughn.   For those unfamiliar: the comic book is basically ‘Harry Potter’ meets ‘James Bond’.  Colin Firth stars as a superspy who takes his hooligan nephew under his wing and teaches him how to be James-Bond-like.  An early scene from the film was screened in addition to a brief teaser afterwards.  For highlights of The Secret Service movie footage, hit the jump. Morgan Freeman: 'Christopher Nolan, David Fincher are very different'

Morgan Freeman has opened up about the prominent filmmakers who he has worked with throughout his illustrious career.

The Hollywood legend has worked with Christopher Nolan in the Batman franchise, David Fincher in Se7en, Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven and Steven Spielberg in Amistad.

When asked by Collider if there are any common traits with all the directors that he has worked with, Freeman answered: "No. I'll be more explicit here. Great directors are great directors by product, not by process. You work with some great directors that drive you nuts, because they'll shoot 17 or 25 takes.

"There are other great directors who move through a production like s**t through a goose, they just don't stop, they keep moving and they come up with good product. They're under budget and on time, or a little quicker than on time.

"Here, I speak specifically of people like Clint Eastwood. You have Chris Nolan. »

Brannon Braga Talks Salem, Balancing Fantasy and History, Rooting the Show in Horror, and More

This Sunday, April 20th, Wgn America premieres Salem, the network's first venture into original programing, staring Shane West, Janet Montgomery, Ashley Madekwe, Seth Gabel, Xander Berkeley, Iddo Goldberg, Tazmin Merchant and Elise Eberle. Salem travels back to 17th Century Colonial Massachusetts for an alternate look at one of the darkest chapters in American history, approaching the infamous era from the point of view that witches were not only real, but manipulating the gruesome events of the trials to their will. The pilot kicks the show off on a strong note; a fun and creepy mixture of horror, fantasy and history that sets itself apart with singular imagery, an engaging mythology and a uniquely sensual approach to dark magic. I recently had the opportunity to visit the set in Shreveport, Louisiana where the town of Salem has been meticulously reconstructed from the ground up. While I was there I sat down »
