Johnny Depp Flops Again, ‘Captain America’ Sequel Rises Past its Predecessor

Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” eked out a small lead over Fox’s “Rio 2” at the Friday box office. The superhero pic looks to win the weekend in this year’s second three-peat (after “The Lego Movie”).
The “Captain America” sequel earned $9.6 million, just over the animated movie’s $9.2 million, which should keep growing as kids hit theaters over the Easter weekend.
Warner Bros.’ new entry “Transcendence” was no match for the epic battle of the sequels, the second tightest race of the year following last weekend’s close showdown. The Johnny Depp-starrer came in at a disappointing fourth place with $4.8 million, making it the actor’s fourth flop in a row. Another newcomer, Sony’s “Heaven Is for Real” exceeded expectations by rising to $7.9 million.
With a cume of $184.5 million, “The Winter Soldier” overlapped its predecessor, “The First Avenger,” which hauled in $176.7 million domestically in its lifetime. »

Some three weeks back over chili cheese fries, Quentin Tarantino suggested to his buddy, interviewer Elvis Mitchell, that he might want to do a live read of his first-draft screenplay of "The Hateful Eight." Director Jason Reitman has been staging Hollywood classics at Film Independent at Lacma for the past three years, including Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs." Needless to say, Mitchell and his team made it happen. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swung into UK cinemas this week and already looks to be another box office hit for the web-slinging superhero franchise.
The dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man now fits Andrew Garfield like a comfortable pair of shoes, but there's still big challenges to face in the form of Jamie Foxx's Electro and a Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) who's fast descending into darkness.

Quentin Tarantino’s Still Working on ‘The Hateful Eight’

After the script of Quentin Tarantino’ s “The Hateful Eight” was leaked in January, the director said he had “no desire to make it.” Well, it’s safe to say he’s reconsidered. At Film Independent’s staged reading of “The Hateful Eight” on Saturday at Downtown L.A.’s Ace Hotel, Tarantino said he was working on a second draft and a third would also come.
“This is the first draft,” he clarified. Tarantino noted that the final chapter, chapter five titled “Black Night, White Hell,” has been rewritten and “this is the only time you’ll see” this version.

Tom Hardy proves he can act in a minor key in this compelling portrait of a man in transit and in crisis
Till now, Tom Hardy's best-known performances have tended to project the image of the movie star most likely to headbutt someone on the red carpet. I'm not thinking just of his unintelligibly deranged Batman villain Bane, but also of his extraordinary lead in Bronson, playing the notorious British prison hard case like a roaringly theatrical circus strongman. His soft-spoken protagonist in Locke is entirely different, yet there's still a touch of the excess that you associate with Hardy for Ivan Locke is a man who lives, as his name suggests, with an excessive degree of control.
Steven Knight's film starts with Locke, a Welsh construction professional, leaving a Birmingham building site in his BMW which is where he stays for the rest of the film, driving and making phone calls. »

The biggest surprise at WonderCon today was 20th Century Fox’s presentation of exclusive new footage from their upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic The Secret Service being directed by Matthew Vaughn. For those unfamiliar: the comic book is basically ‘Harry Potter’ meets ‘James Bond’. Colin Firth stars as a superspy who takes his hooligan nephew under his wing and teaches him how to be James-Bond-like.
