‘Mad Men’ Preview: Buckle Up For 7 ‘Dense’ Episodes, Says Matthew Weiner

11 April 2014 7:48 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Get ready and don’t blink — the “Mad Men” mini season that begins on Sunday is tightly packed with momentous developments for the core Sterling Cooper gang.

“The episodes are dense,” creator/exec producer Matthew Weiner says of season 7-a. Because the show’s finale is divided over two years, and the first batch of seven episodes have to stand alone until the final seven air next year, each seg is action-packed, he says.

“After realizing that I needed two premieres and two finales, it changed the pacing of every other episode. These episodes are more focused on the main characters than ever before — and I’ve got a lot of main characters. There’s no room for digression this time. The first seven feel like (the story arc of) a whole season,” Weiner says.

The historical backdrop of the era (presumably early-ish in 1969) is an important factor as always »

Prince William Hints at Baby No. 2

just now | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

It may only have been a quip, a classic well-meaning comment made during a royal outing, but Prince William set off speculation that he and wife Kate are planning for baby no. 2 imminently. The hint came as William told a woman who'd made a gift for his son: "You might have to make another one soon." The remark came as William and Kate, who are on a three-week tour Down Under, were chatting to Cynthia Read, who had knitted them a shawl for their son, Prince George, on behalf of the New Zealand government. 'SNL' brings Jeb Bush and Paul Ryan to Coachella

3 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

"Saturday Night Live" hasn't had a lot of luck with politically themed opening skits this season, but that hasn't stopped them trying.  Since this week's show coincided with the Coachella Music Festival and midterm elections are starting to heat up, "SNL" imagined how none other than Jeb Bush (Beck Bennett) and Paul Ryan (Taran Killam) would try to sell a "new Gop" to the crowd.  Bennett's Bush is pretty weak, but there are some strong one liners in there. Plus, why do we think it's not that hard to believe DJ Rand Paul would be spinning in a Coachella tent somewhere? Watch the whole clip in the video below. James Franco, Taylor Swift and Zooey Deschanel crash Seth Rogen's 'SNL' monologue

4 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Seth Rogen returned to host "Saturday Night Live" for the third time and, as you'd expect, there were a bunch of cameos. Rogen's good buddy and frequent co-star James Franco came on to try and make light of his recent Instagram/teenage girl "scandal."  Zooey Deschanel brought her banjo. And, Taylor Swift?  Well, we're 99% sure she isn't actually good friends with Rogen and his crew (but then again?).  Still, she did have a reason which worked in context.  Trust us. The bigger question is: Where was Rogen's "Neighbors'" co-star Zac Efron?  Check out the good times in the video embedded below. Zooey Deschanel, Taylor Swift and Franco promptly showed up anyway. Rogen also claimed he had pranked Franco by posing as an underage girl online. "He seemed unfazed," Rogen said, mocking his friend, who apologized last week for chatting with

Interview: Martin Freeman compares 'Fargo' to 'Sherlock' on the set of the FX drama

6 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Calgary - I've been on two Martin Freeman sets in the past year, so I'm prepared for his process.  I can't tell you the details of what Freeman's Lester Nygaard is actually doing in the scene being filmed on this beautiful March day in the hills just outside of Downtown Calgary. "Fargo" is simultaneously shooting the seventh and eighth episodes of its 10-episode season and things are getting a wee bit climactic on the FX limited series.  It's not spoiling much to say that Lester Nygaard is under pressure in this particular moment. Lester is under pressure for most of "Fargo," which draws inspiration, but very little plot, from the Coen Brothers' Oscar-winning film. From the beginning, Lester is a slightly-less-than-normal guy whose life is turned upside-down by a chance meeting with Billy Bob Thornton's appropriately malevolent Lorne Malvo. As befits what is now the "Fargo" franchise, this meeting leads to violence, »

Recap: Saturday Night Live with Seth Rogen and Ed Sheeran

7 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It’s almost five years to the day that Seth Rogen last hosted “Saturday Night Live.” (Somewhat amusingly, his “Neighbors” co-star Zac Efron hosted the very next week.) Meanwhile, over the last five episodes, “SNL” itself has survived a rather rocky start to the post-Seth Meyers Era with a string of solid albeit non-classic episodes after the Jim Parsons-hosted debacle. Heading into its final break of the season, it will be interesting to see if the show ends on an upswing or downswing heading into the final stretch of this flawed yet fascinating season. As always, I’ll be liveblogging, assigning grades to each segment. As always, those grades are designed in a lab to make the maximum number of people on the internet angry. They couldn’t possibly be an inherently imperfect way for one person to sum up his or her thoughts about a sketch comedy show in real time. »
