'Captain America' Wins Close Fight with 'Rio 2' This Weekend

In a strange turn of events, Rio 2 took first place at the box office on Friday, but fell back to second place for the three-day weekend. Chalk this up to nice weather throughout most of the country, which kept family audiences away from the multiplexes on Saturday. As a result, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was able to narrowly hold on to the top spot for the second-straight weekend. The superhero sequel added $41.4 million, which was off 56 percent from its debut. That's a slightly better hold than Iron Man 3 (58 percent) and Thor: The Dark World (57 percent), but it's also a bit worse than the movie's strong reviews and word-of-mouth would suggest. So far, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has earned $159 million at the domestic box office. If it remains on pace with the Thor and Iron Man sequels, it will finish with at least $225 million.Playing at 3,948 locations, »

Friday Report: 'Rio 2' Narrowly Defeats 'Captain America'

12 April 2014 8:44 AM, PDT

Rio 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier were neck-and-neck on Friday, though it looks like the weekend is going to the birds.Playing at 3,948 locations, Rio 2 took the top spot on Friday with $12 million. That's an improvement over the first Rio, which earned $10.3 million on opening day back in 2011. For the weekend, Rio 2 will take the top spot with at least $45 million.Captain America wasn't far behind with $11.9 million. That's a steep 68 percent drop from last Friday; in comparison, Thor: The Dark World fell 67 percent, while Iron Man 3 plummeted 71 percent. Captain America should earn just over $40 million for the weekend.Supernatural horror movie Oculus took third place with a solid $4.94 million. Among April horror movies, that's about on par with Insidious ($4.8 million), but below The Cabin in the Woods ($5.5 million). By Sunday, Oculus could earn as much as $13 million. In fourth place, Draft Day opened to an estimated $3.58 million. »

Forecast: 'Rio,' 'Cap' Could Both Top $40 Million This Weekend... >

10 April 2014 5:28 PM, PDT

Animated sequel Rio 2 could cruise to around $40 million this weekend, which would put it in a close race for first place against Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Meanwhile, Draft Day and Oculus are targeting more modest debuts.Captain America: The Winter Soldier set an April record last weekend with $95 million. Most comic book movies fall hard in their second weekends: similar movies Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World fell 58 percent and 57 percent, respectively. Captain America has better reviews and stronger word-of-mouth, though it would still be surprising if it dropped less than 50 percent. Playing at 3,948 locations, Rio 2 could give the Captain a run for its money. The first Rio opened to $39.2 million around the same time in 2011, and ultimately closed with a solid $143.6 million. While it was well-liked enough, its reputation doesn't seem to suggest a huge bump for the sequel.Rio 2 shifts the action »

Which 2014 Movies Could Reach $1 Billion Worldwide?

8 April 2014 3:15 PM, PDT

Looking ahead at the 2014 schedule, which movies*if any*have a chance at reaching the coveted $1 billion mark? With Frozen recently passing $1 billion and the Summer movie season right around the corner, now is as good a time as any to dive in to this question. To date, only 16 movies have reached this level in their initial runs (Jurassic Park and The Phantom Menace needed 3D re-releases). With the rapid expansion of the foreign marketplace and the addition of 3D premiums, the chance of getting to $1 billion is higher than ever: in the past three years alone, nine different movies have made it there. Of those nine, only one (Frozen) was an original movie. The rest are sequels, which were all able to grow an existing fanbase (rather than create one from scratch). It should be no surprise, then, that the 2014 releases with the best chance of reaching $1 billion are mostly franchise titles. »

Which 2014 Movies Could Reach $1 Billion? (cont.)

8 April 2014 3:01 PM, PDT

<< Continued from "Which 2014 Movies Could Reach $1 Billion?"OriginalsGodzilla (May)Big-budget disaster movies tend to draw huge crowds, and Godzilla is a brand that resonates with global audiences. Back in 1998, Roland Emmerich's Godzilla earned $379 million worldwide; with the expanded foreign market and drastically higher ticket prices, it's hard to imagine this new movie earning a penny less than $500 million. Still, even if it does twice as much business as last Summer's Pacific Rim, it would still be well short of $1 billion. Odds: 15%Maleficent (May)Back in 2010, Alice in Wonderland became one of the rare "original" movies to earn over $1 billion worldwide. Remodeling iconic fantasies in big-budget live-action form has since become a major part of Disney's strategy. Unfortunately, Oz The Great and Powerful earned less than half as much as Alice in Wonderland, suggesting that movie's success was an anomaly. Featuring the Sleeping Beauty villain as the protagonist, Maleficent is an even tougher sell. »
