WHO and UNICEF work to save 50 000 newborn babies each year in the Western Pacific Region

MANILA, 12 May 2014 – The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund have released the Action Plan for Healthy Newborn Infants in the Western Pacific Region (2014–2020), a pioneering document that presents crucial interventions focusing on the first three days of life. “We have a bold yet simple plan that can provide a healthy start for every newborn infant. Let us continue to work together to make a real difference in the lives of women and children in the Western Pacific Region,” said Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific.

Western Pacific Region reviews implementation of WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

NADI, Fiji, 30 April 2014 – Twenty-five countries in the Western Pacific Region came together to promote the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in the Region. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Health, Fiji in Nadi, and organized by the Convention Secretariat of the WHO FCTC in cooperation with the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific and WHO Division of Pacific Technical Support.

WHO’s report on antibiotic resistance reveals serious, worldwide threat to public health

GENEVA, 30 April 2014 – A new report by the World Health Organization (WHO)—the first such report to look at antibiotic resistance globally—reveals that this serious threat is no longer a worry for the future: it is happening now in every region of the world. Antibiotic resistance—when bacteria change so antibiotics no longer work to treat infections—is now a major threat to public health, with the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country.

MANILA, 25 April 2014 – Today on World Malaria Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Western Pacific Region celebrates more than a decade of significant progress in the fight against malaria. Since 2000, most malaria-endemic countries in the Region reduced their malaria burden by 75%, in line with global goals.
