Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Nobel laureate whose novels and short stories exposed tens of millions of readers to Latin America's passion, superstition, violence and inequality, died at home in Mexico City around midday, according to people close to his family. He was 87. Widely considered the most popular Spanish-language writer since Miguel de Cervantes in the 17th century, Garcia Marquez achieved literary celebrity that spawned comparisons to Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. Tommy Lee Jones, Bennett Miller, David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan will duke it out with Jean-Luc Godard, Mike Leigh, Ken Loach, Michel Hazanavicius and the Dardenne brothers for the Palme d’Or at the 67th annual Cannes Film Festival, which unveiled its official selection lineup this morning in Paris by fest topper Thierry Fremaux.
The wide-ranging competition slate is typically heavy on French filmmakers, with Olivier Assayas’ international co-production “Clouds of Sils Maria” and Bertrand Bonello’s fashion-designer biopic “Saint Laurent” joining Hazanavicius’ “The Search” and Godard’s 3D experiment “Goodbye to Language.” Fremaux noted that Godard, famously a no-show at the 2010 Cannes premiere of his “Film socialisme,” had “promised he’ll be there — which doesn’t mean he will!”

Steven Spielberg to Direct ‘The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara’ (Exclusive)

Though he’s still mulling what his next directing gig will be, Steven Spielberg has added another project to his development slate: a religious drama titled “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,” written by “Lincoln” and “Munich” scribe Tony Kushner. Spielberg plans to direct and produce the drama, which would be a co-production between DreamWorks and the Weinstein Co.
The pic is based on the David Kertzer novel revolving around the true life story of an Italian Jew who in 1858 became the center of an international controversy when he was removed from his parents at the age of seven by authorities of the Papal States and raised as a Catholic. He went on to become a priest in the Augustinian order.
Spielberg and Kushner also teamed on historical dramas “Munich” and “Lincoln,” both of which landed best picture nominations. Spielberg is said to be very anxious to get back behind the camera, »

Bryan Singer Accuser: Lapd Knew About Sexual Abuse in 1999

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Bryan Singer’s accuser Michael Egan said his mother first reported the allegations of sexual abuse to the Los Angeles Police Department when he was 17 years old.
“It basically fell on deaf ears and I basically buried it deep within me” after that, he told reporters.
The plaintiff who filed suit against “X-Men” director Bryan Singer, claiming that the helmer sexually assaulted him multiple times some 15 years ago beginning at the age of 15, appeared alongside his attorney Jeff Herman at the media event in Beverly Hills.
Herman, who specializes in sexual assault cases, said that he expects to file additional cases against alleged perpetrators by April 24 in Hawaii. That is the cutoff date for the statute of limitations there.
The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in Hawaii, where Egan claims he was flown multiple times in 1999 and forced to have non-consensual sex with Singer. »

Here's the first trailer for Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys movie — yes, that Clint Eastwood — based on the long-running Broadway musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. John Lloyd Young, who won a Tony for his stage portrayal of Valli, is back in the role, along with Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire), and Christopher Walken as a mob boss. If you were concerned about how Hollywood's foremost rugged octogenarian would fare with his first foray into musical theater, fear not: it appears that Eastwood is sticking pretty nicely to the musical's key elements, with plenty of direct-address monologues in thick New Jersey accents followed by high-pitched song and dance numbers. From elaborate dates and luxury boat rides to the striking physical resemblance, Hicks must keep up the chivalrous charade until the truth is revealed. Judging by this clip of hopeful contestants competing for his affections, these ladies are in for a rude awakening.

Among the most sacred texts of Broadway is Moss Hart’s Act One, an autobiography of the once-famous playwright and director that’s plenty auto but not much biography. It’s full of lies and obfuscations. Hart’s troubled Aunt Kate did not, for instance, die a happy woman in 1925 after the free tickets he obtained as a producer’s office boy enabled him to give her one “last wonderful year.” (In fact, in 1935, she was caught setting fires backstage during rehearsals for a musical that Hart was directing.) Hart himself was manic-depressive, not that you’d know it from the book. And then there’s the matter of his sexuality, conveniently obscured by nubile red herrings. He has spent years adapting “Act One” to the stage, where it opened Thursday under his direction at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. He probably knows the book as well, if not better, than anyone else on the planet. It's strange then that this writer-director has not heeded the book's advice on how Hart, then a novice playwright, was able to turn his own floundering show “Once in a Lifetime,” co-written with George S. First off, kudos to Paul Wesley for his directing debut. This was an episode with a lot of feels for Elena and Stefan, so it couldn't have been easy bouncing back and forth behind the camera to check the shot. But let's move on. I'm still reeling a bit from all the dream sequences, visits to the afterlife and, of course, Markos. Did anyone else feel a little wrecked by Elena's dreams of a perfect life with Stefan? Seeing the two of them happy together brought back bittersweet memories, but the image of them as a normal, married couple with two cute kids underscored how far Elena has been pulled from the life she knew -- and how cuddly Stefan can be when he's not on a killing spree. New York (AP) — Miley Cyrus is postponing more concerts as she remains in a hospital for a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics. A representative says the singer won't perform in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday and Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday. Those concerts will be rescheduled. Cyrus suffered from a sinus infection last week during her "Bangerz" tour. Her rep says she had "an extreme allergic reaction" to the antibiotic cephalexin. This week, Cyrus also canceled concerts in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri. She postponed a show in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week because of the flu.
