Gabriel Garcia Marquez Has Died

6 hours ago | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Nobel laureate whose novels and short stories exposed tens of millions of readers to Latin America's passion, superstition, violence and inequality, died at home in Mexico City around midday, according to people close to his family. He was 87. Widely considered the most popular Spanish-language writer since Miguel de Cervantes in the 17th century, Garcia Marquez achieved literary celebrity that spawned comparisons to Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. His flamboyant and melancholy fictional works - among them Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Love in the Time of Cholera, and Autumn of the Patriarch - outsold everything published in Spanish except the Bible. »

Cannes Unveils 2014 Official Selection Lineup

18 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Tommy Lee Jones, Bennett Miller, David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan will duke it out with Jean-Luc Godard, Mike Leigh, Ken Loach, Michel Hazanavicius and the Dardenne brothers for the Palme d’Or at the 67th annual Cannes Film Festival, which unveiled its official selection lineup this morning in Paris by fest topper Thierry Fremaux.

The wide-ranging competition slate is typically heavy on French filmmakers, with Olivier Assayas’ international co-production “Clouds of Sils Maria” and Bertrand Bonello’s fashion-designer biopic “Saint Laurent” joining Hazanavicius’ “The Search” and Godard’s 3D experiment “Goodbye to Language.” Fremaux noted that Godard, famously a no-show at the 2010 Cannes premiere of his “Film socialisme,” had “promised he’ll be there — which doesn’t mean he will!”

One of the more intriguing developments of this year’s competition is the unusual dominance of Canadian auteurs. »

Steven Spielberg to Direct ‘The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara’ (Exclusive)

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Though he’s still mulling what his next directing gig will be, Steven Spielberg has added another project to his development slate: a religious drama titled “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,” written by “Lincoln” and “Munich” scribe Tony Kushner. Spielberg plans to direct and produce the drama, which would be a co-production between DreamWorks and the Weinstein Co.

The pic is based on the David Kertzer novel revolving around the true life story of an Italian Jew who in 1858 became the center of an international controversy when he was removed from his parents at the age of seven by authorities of the Papal States and raised as a Catholic. He went on to become a priest in the Augustinian order.

Spielberg and Kushner also teamed on historical dramas “Munich” and “Lincoln,” both of which landed best picture nominations. Spielberg is said to be very anxious to get back behind the camera, »

Bryan Singer Accuser: Lapd Knew About Sexual Abuse in 1999

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Bryan Singer’s accuser Michael Egan said his mother first reported the allegations of sexual abuse to the Los Angeles Police Department when he was 17 years old.

“It basically fell on deaf ears and I basically buried it deep within me” after that, he told reporters.

The plaintiff who filed suit against “X-Men” director Bryan Singer, claiming that the helmer sexually assaulted him multiple times some 15 years ago beginning at the age of 15, appeared alongside his attorney Jeff Herman at the media event in Beverly Hills.

Herman, who specializes in sexual assault cases, said that he expects to file additional cases against alleged perpetrators by April 24 in Hawaii. That is the cutoff date for the statute of limitations there.

The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in Hawaii, where Egan claims he was flown multiple times in 1999 and forced to have non-consensual sex with Singer. »

'Mrs. Doubtfire' star Mara Wilson won't be in the sequel because she has standards

6 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Today in "Mrs. Doubtfire 2" news (yes, you read that right, and no, you have not inadvertently traveled back to the year 1995), "Mrs. Doubtfire 1" star Mara Wilson wants nothing whatsoever to do with the belated sequel because...well, let's just say she's been quite verbose on the topic via her (shockingly delightful) official Twitter account. See, Twitter! Didn't even exist in 1995! Deep breaths... And now, without further adieu, here are seven reason why we won't be seeing the adorable former '90s child star (who is now 26! <dies from shock>) showing up in the cash-grabby followup: 1. She's not into sequels. I've been in some mediocre movies, but I've never been in a sequel. And I have no interest in being in one now. — Mara Wilson (@MaraWritesStuff) April 17, 2014 2. Sequels are terrible, usually. Sequels generally suck unless they were planned as part of a trilogy or series. I think Doubtfire ended where it needed to end. »

Bryan Singer's Lawyer: The 2000 Suit That Didn't Name Director Is a ‘Smoking Gun’

Bryan Singer's lawyer, Marty Singer, said new revelations that sex abuse accuser Michael Egan filed a lawsuit against two alleged pedophiles in 2000 but did not name the director is a “smoking gun” that proves his client's innocence. “He filed a lawsuit with identical language and claims? That's a smoking gun,” Marty Singer told TheWrap. Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys Trailer Is Here

56 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Here's the first trailer for Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys movie — yes, that Clint Eastwood — based on the long-running Broadway musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. John Lloyd Young, who won a Tony for his stage portrayal of Valli, is back in the role, along with Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire), and Christopher Walken as a mob boss. If you were concerned about how Hollywood's foremost rugged octogenarian would fare with his first foray into musical theater, fear not: it appears that Eastwood is sticking pretty nicely to the musical's key elements, with plenty of direct-address monologues in thick New Jersey accents followed by high-pitched song and dance numbers. Sort of like Goodfellas, if it was a crowd-pleasing jukebox musical directed by Dirty Harry. Count us in. »

However Singer's attorney, Marty Singer (no relation), maintains that the allegations made against his client are false. "The claims »

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With Prince William off the market and baby George years away from the crown, it looks like American women will do just about anything for a shot at romance with a royal — even if it means not fact-checking the person’s pedigree.

The trailer for Fox’s new reality dating series “I Wanna Marry ‘Harry’” (created by the “Joe Millionaire” team) shows how 12 American women were royally duped into thinking they could win a fairy tale wedding with Prince Harry, In fact, the “prince” is his equally red-headed lookalike Matthew Hicks.

From elaborate dates and luxury boat rides to the striking physical resemblance, Hicks must keep up the chivalrous charade until the truth is revealed. Judging by this clip of hopeful contestants competing for his affections, these ladies are in for a rude awakening.

'American Idol' Top 7 shocker: Dexter Roberts kicked to the curb

Theater Review: The Second Life of Act One

1 hour ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Among the most sacred texts of Broadway is Moss Hart’s Act One, an autobiography of the once-famous playwright and director that’s plenty auto but not much biography. It’s full of lies and obfuscations. Hart’s troubled Aunt Kate did not, for instance, die a happy woman in 1925 after the free tickets he obtained as a producer’s office boy enabled him to give her one “last wonderful year.” (In fact, in 1935, she was caught setting fires backstage during rehearsals for a musical that Hart was directing.) Hart himself was manic-depressive, not that you’d know it from the book. And then there’s the matter of his sexuality, conveniently obscured by nubile red herrings. Sacrilege though it may be to say so, I find Act One to be gassy and self-serving, despite the undeniable fun of its rollicking backstage tale. Indeed, the truest thing it offers is »

‘Act One’ Theater Review: Tony Shalhoub Does Triple Duty in Moss Hart Memoir

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

James Lapine must have memorized Moss Hart's classic memoir of a life in the theater. He has spent years adapting “Act One” to the stage, where it opened Thursday under his direction at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. He probably knows the book as well, if not better, than anyone else on the planet. It's strange then that this writer-director has not heeded the book's advice on how Hart, then a novice playwright, was able to turn his own floundering show “Once in a Lifetime,” co-written with George S. Kaufman, into a big hit on Broadway in 1930. Also read: ‘Bullets Over. »

'The Vampire Diaries' recap: Can Elena love both brothers at the same time?

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

First off, kudos to Paul Wesley for his directing debut. This was an episode with a lot of feels for Elena and Stefan, so it couldn't have been easy bouncing back and forth behind the camera to check the shot. But let's move on. I'm still reeling a bit from all the dream sequences, visits to the afterlife and, of course, Markos.  Did anyone else feel a little wrecked by Elena's dreams of a perfect life with Stefan? Seeing the two of them happy together brought back bittersweet memories, but the image of them as a normal, married couple with two cute kids underscored how far Elena has been pulled from the life she knew -- and how cuddly Stefan can be when he's not on a killing spree. The dreams may have been a bit cliched -- and I really don't think Elena ever wanted to become a mom »
