Exclusive Video Interview With John Turturro On Fading Gigolo

John Turturro built his reputation by starring in a slew of independent features that showcase a vast range and immense talents, including Coen brothers classics like Barton Fink and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but John’s talents stretch farther than just acting. As a writer and director, Turturro has gained a few filmmaker credits with titles like Romance & Cigarettes, but his most recent film has gained some pretty deserving hype because of an on-screen team-up with famed goofball Woody Allen. Yes, Turturro’s new film Fading Gigolo pits these two Brooklyn natives as dear friends, one being a pimp and the other being his gigolo – guess which is which?

Also starring Sharon Stone, Sofía VergaraVanessa Paradis, and Liev Schreiber, this sweet tale of love and companionship puts Turturro and Allen in a world full of guilt, paychecks, and the conflicting emotions that accompany such a lifestyle. While some »

The Dark Knight Joins The Suicide Squad In New Trailer For Batman: Assault On Arkham

While we may have to wait until 2016 to see Batman and Superman face off on the big screen, we luckily don’t have to wait quite as long to see the Caped Crusader in a movie again. In fact, he’ll be making two appearances this year in upcoming direct-to-video animated releases from the awkwardly titled DC Universe Animated Movies line.

The first film, Son of Batman, arrives on May 6th, and the second, Batman: Assault on Arkham, sometime this fall. The latter feature will exist independently from the other Dcau films, instead occupying the same space as the popular and successful Arkham video games. The first trailer for the film was released yesterday, and you can check it out below.

Directed by Jay Oliva (The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League: War), Assault on Arkham pits the Dark Knight against the Joker, who has stolen a dirty bomb and rigged it somewhere in Gotham City. »

New Character Big Band Coming To Skullgirls Encore

19 April 2014 5:31 PM, PDT

Skullgirls Encore, the revamp of the hit downloadable 2D tournament fighter from Lab Zero Games, originally launched bundled with the first of several new fighters, that being Squigly. Now, another newcomer, who goes by the name of Big Band, will be made available this coming week. He’s an interesting character, too, due to both his unique appearance and the notable fact that he’s the game’s first male fighter.

Big Band will be one of, if not the largest playable character in Skullgirls Encore, and he will likely have plenty of brawn to back up his imposing size. In a PlayStation Blog post confirming his arrival, Lab Zero CEO Peter Bartholow describes him as “a high risk / high reward sort of character,” as he has a powerful and versatile set of attacks, but can be left momentarily vulnerable if players don’t time them right. Going further, another »

See Godzilla In All His Glory In New TV Spot

19 April 2014 1:22 PM, PDT

There’s been no shortage of promotion for Gareth EdwardsGodzilla, with plenty of trailers and TV spots to get fans excited for the monster movie. The one thing that’s been missing from the footage, however, has been the monster itself, or at least a solid look at it. Every glimpse so far was either a passing glance or shrouded by smoke, but that all changes today with Warner Bros.’ newest TV spot.

It starts off like many of the other trailers from the film, by focusing on the human element, with plenty of emotional and tearful shots. It isn’t until the very end of the 30 seconds that it gets really good though, as we get our first clear look at the monster and hear it let out its famous, fierce roar.

Truthfully, I was enjoying the mystery created by not seeing the monster, and a part of »

Big Bad Wolves Blu-Ray Review

19 April 2014 10:24 AM, PDT

Everyone knows that the best fairy tales are the really dark ones you never heard as a child. What’s better: Cinderella’s ugly stepsisters pouting in the background, or getting their eyes pecked out by vengeful doves? The Evil Queen in Snow White falling off a cliff, or dancing in red-hot iron shoes until she drops dead? I’ll consider that point proven.

Big Bad Wolves, an Israeli film from writer-directors Navot Papushado and Aharon Kashales, wants to be a modern fairy tale for adults, one which bets on being as twisted and disturbing as possible. Though Quentin Tarantino (probably knowingly) damned Big Bad Wolves by naming it the best film of 2013, which it certainly is not (despite it playing almost like a feature-length version of the torture scene from Tarantino’s own Reservoir Dogs), there’s still an undeniable fascination to be found in watching a tale of »

Bryan Singer Drops Out Of All X-Men: Days Of Future Past Promotion

19 April 2014 9:43 AM, PDT

In news that shouldn’t surprise anyone, director Bryan Singer is dropping out of all press/promotion for his upcoming film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. The decision to do so makes complete sense given the very serious lawsuit that he’s now facing, which accuses Singer of sexually abused a teenage boy back in the late 1990s. Of course, the director has denied the claims but, as of now, he’s fighting to assert his innocence, so it’s understandable why he wouldn’t want to focus on talking to journalists.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like things will be clearing up any time soon for the director, either, as the lawyer who filed the lawsuit says that several more are coming next week, targeting both Singer and other Hollywood power players.

20th Century Fox has yet to comment on the whole affair, but it should be obvious that »

Max Greenfield Confirmed For Hello My Name Is Doris

19 April 2014 8:23 AM, PDT

New Girl’s Max Greenfield has a new project on his slate, teaming him for a second time with writer/director Michael Showalter for Hello My Name Is Doris. According to Greenfield, when he spoke to The Wrap, the film is something of a departure for the Wet Hot American Summer scribe.

“It’s about Doris, this character – she’s an older woman. Her mother passes away and then she’s forced to kind of find a new life in the city, and she meets this younger guy and thinks he’s the answer. It’s very funny, but it really kind of toes the line. It’ll be different than what you’re used to [seeing] with him,” said Greenfield.

Michael Showalter co-wrote They Came Together with David Wain, featuring Max Greenfield alongside stars Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd - which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year, »

Saturday Night Live Plans 40th Anniversary Celebration

19 April 2014 4:31 AM, PDT

Look at the current landscape of American comedy in TV and film, and you will see an institution that has been shaped, molded and influenced by one show more than any other, for 39 years. Saturday Night Live has consistently proven itself to be the training ground for some of the best writers and performers in the business today, and it is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Created by Lorne Michaels, and developed by Dick Ebersol (previously NBC’s Vice President of late-night programming) in 1975, Saturday Night Live is the late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show that was designed to parody culture and politics with a repertory cast, celebrity guest hosts and a musical guest performance each week. It is one of the longest-running network TV shows in America, with a bulging trophy cabinet that includes 36 prime-time Emmys, 3 Writer’s Guild Association awards and a Peabody. In 2012, it »

The Vampire Diaries Review: “Resident Evil” (Season 5, Episode 18)

18 April 2014 7:53 PM, PDT

Paul Wesley made his directorial debut on tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries and fans won’t be disappointed with the results. Besides a few choice camera angles, it was business as usual on the teen drama. That is, unless you’re a diehard Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) fan. The writers once again pulled the plug on this relationship and put the hearts of Delena supporters through an emotional blender, making sure that drama was anything but in short supply.

Resident Evil not only dispelled the doppelganger folklore regarding the universe’s brand of fate, which seems like it should be an over-sized check mark in the win column, but it managed to put the breaks on any immediate future for the recently estranged couple at the same time. It’s almost become a game at this point. How long with Elena and Damon last this »

The Amazing Spider-Man Won’t Join The Avengers Any Time Soon

18 April 2014 6:28 PM, PDT

Though we’re getting sick of hearing it reiterated again and again, it looks like people just aren’t going to stop asking questions about a crossover between Spider-Man and the Avengers. The topic came up again recently when The Amazing Spider-Man producer Avi Arad spoke with IGN, where he told them that the cross-over that many fans are begging for won’t be happening any time soon.

The main reason Arad gives for avoiding a crossover is the fact that he believes the Spider-Man universe has more than enough source material, especially with the plans for Venom and Sinister Six films.

I think I’m probably a little bit of the militant here. I think it will take a moment in which we’ve run out of ideas. There’s so much to tell about Spider-Man. There’s so much to tell about the Sinister Six. The relationship between »

New Details And Release Date For Woody Allen’s Magic In The Moonlight

18 April 2014 6:23 PM, PDT

Prolific director Woody Allen is enjoying a bit of an upswing after last year’s critically acclaimed Blue Jasmine. Though he’s always been a bit hit and miss, his last effort was one of his best yet and this summer, we’ll see if he can strike gold again with his next film, Magic in the Moonlight. The romantic comedy has been shrouded in secrecy for a while now but thanks to The Film Stage, we finally have some more details about the film, including an official release date.

Taking place in the south of France in the 1920′s, Magic in the Moonlight will arrive on July 25th and stars Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Eileen Atkins, Hamish Linklater and Simon McBurney. A previous synopsis for the film describes it as “a romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle, »

Fox Has “No Plans” For An X-Men And Fantastic Four Crossover Film

18 April 2014 5:33 PM, PDT

The two big words hovering over the superhero genre at the moment are “Cinematic Universe,” as each studio is finding ways to make their comic book properties exist within the same continuity. Marvel Studios famously started the trend with Iron Man back in 2008, culminating in an expansive shared universe that just keeps getting bigger.

Due to Marvel’s success, the other big studios are scrambling to compete. Sony is hard at work on building a Spider-Man universe, with several already-announced sequels and villain spin-offs, Warner Bros. is currently starting production on Batman vs. Superman, and 20th Century Fox is gearing up to make a Fantastic Four reboot that exists within the same “universe” as the X-Men franchise.

Because Fox owns both properties, it was assumed that we would someday see a crossover or team-up film featuring the mutants and the famous super-family. Last month, the studio announced several release dates »

Cel Damage HD Will Bring Its Vehicular Carnage To Psn Next Week

18 April 2014 3:16 PM, PDT

Vehicular combat will be the name of the game on Psn next week, as Cel Damage HD is being prepped for a Tuesday release. The game — which was originally released over a decade ago for the first Xbox — will bring its zany antics to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita as a Cross-Buy title.

According to Joystiq, this visually enhanced version of the classic game will offer thirteen maps and six playable characters, in addition to console-only split-screen multiplayer. As such, friends can gather together to play the game the way that it was meant to be experienced.

Cel Damage HD will come with a price tag of $9.99, a one-time fee that will grant players access to all three of its versions, when it launches early next week. PlayStation Plus members will get a better deal, though, as a (launch week-only) 10% discount will be offered to that service’s subscribers.

The Railway Man Review

18 April 2014 12:42 PM, PDT

There is a compelling story bursting to get out of The Railway Man, Jonathan Teplitzky’s flat adaptation of Eric Lomax’s memoir. However, some of the most fascinating sections of Lomax’s tale are a mystery to those who have not picked up his award-winning book. Strong performances from Colin Firth and Jeremy Irvine, as a middle-aged and young adult Lomax, respectively, give the veteran’s story layers that Teplitzky fails to capture in the rest of his woe-begotten film, which is safe, simplistic and only intermittently involving.

As an older man, Lomax obsessed over the order and operation of England’s railways, to the extent that he can hop between platforms to the one that most suits his travels when his original trip is delayed. Coasting through the countryside on the train one morning, in a shabby coat, he chats with Patti (Nicole Kidman, hardly used), and falls in love with her. »

Michael Fassbender And Marion Cotillard Prepare For Murder In First Images from Macbeth

18 April 2014 12:25 PM, PDT

William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth has seen several terrific big-screen versions, tackled by directors as esteemed as Orson Welles, Roman Polanski and Akira Kurosawa. The tale of murder and paranoia, featuring one of the most maniacal female villains in all of literature (Lady Macbeth), is a work that continues to inspire and influence storytelling to this day. In fact, many culture commentators have noted that the relationship between Frank and Claire Underwood on House of Cards has shades of the power-hungry, conniving characters from Shakespeare’s classic.

Now, a new film adaptation of the beloved tragedy is set to hit theatres either later this year or early in 2015, with Michael Fassbender as Macbeth and Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth. The first photos of the adaptation have arrived online today (you can find them above and below) and they indicate just how dark and depraved director Justin Kerzel (Snowtown) is going with the already macabre material. »

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Blu-Ray Review

18 April 2014 12:00 PM, PDT

Who knew that Ben Stiller, the funnyman behind Zoolander and There’s Something About Mary, was the right man to bring James Thurber’s classic short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty to the big screen? Of course, much of the short story is absent from Stiller’s adaptation, but that was always a certainty (beautiful though it is, the original story is hardly enough to fill a short, let alone a major studio tentpole). What Stiller does manage to do, however, to my great surprise, is capture the adventurous heart of his title character.

Part of what makes Stiller’s characterization so enjoyable is how he nails the mannerisms of the Everyman. Working as a negative assets manager for the fictional Life magazine, Walter is quiet and awkward, more inclined to drift off into daydreams than actually look at what’s in front of him. Without alienating the character from the audience, »

The American Dream Is Waiting In Spellbinding Trailer For James Gray’s The Immigrant, Plus 20 New Images And A Poster

18 April 2014 11:37 AM, PDT

After a well-received premiere at the Cannes Film Festival almost a year ago, James Gray’s period drama The Immigrant is finally preparing to hit screens stateside. There was a time where it was presumed that The Weinstein Company would be relegating The Immigrant to a VOD release via its Radius-twc brand, but the company did an about face earlier this spring, opting instead to send the film into a limited theatrical run. Now, The Immigrant, which stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner and Joaquin Phoenix, has received a U.S. trailer and accompanying poster, along with a slew of images.

The trailer offers a tantalizing look into the stunningly beautiful world of 1921 New York, as immaculately lensed by Darius Khondji. It’s clear that The Immigrant is going to be a delicious visual treat for cinephiles, but the story is also highly promising.

Cotillard plays a Polish immigrant named Ewa, »

Skylanders Developer Reveals Nintendo Passed On Series Exclusivity

18 April 2014 6:31 AM, PDT

As Activision’s toy-based Skylanders series continues to be a massive hit with younger gamers, reaching over $2 billion in worldwide sales, a recent interview with a member of Toys for Bob, the developer who kicked off the franchise, has revealed an interesting tidbit of information regarding what could have been.

Studio co-founder Paul Reiche said that back when the first title, Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure was in the first stages of development, Activision approached Nintendo to discuss the possibility of making the series a Wii exclusive. Reiche summed up Nintendo’s overall reaction by saying:

“They spent a long time looking and looking…They were just like, ‘We have never seen anything like this before.’ I’ve always wondered about the full meaning of that comment.”

Ultimately, Nintendo passed on possible exclusivity deals, and while Skylanders games have still ended up on the Wii, Wii U, and 3Ds, they’ve »

Chris Pine In Talks To Lead Disney’s The Finest Hours

18 April 2014 6:08 AM, PDT

Star Trek actor Chris Pine is in talks to lead a Disney period drama called The Finest Hours, which focuses on the efforts of the coast guard to rescue the crews of two oil tankers caught in a Noreaster. Based on an actual rescue in 1952, the project is being approached as a suspenseful but uplifting drama.

Craig Gillespie, behind the upcoming Disney film Million Dollar Arm, is also in talks to direct The Finest Hours. The helmer will replace Robert Schwentke (Red, R.I.P.D.), who left the project amid script rewrites to film Summit Entertainment’s Divergent follow-up Insurgent.

Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, the same writing duo behind The Fighter, penned the screenplay, basing it on Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias’s 2009 nonfiction book The Finest Hours: The True Story Behind the Us Coast Guard’s Most Daring Rescue.

If Pine does come on board, he’ll attempt »
