‘Wolf of Wall Street’ $25 Million Defamation Case: Producers Say More Than One Toupee Involved

4 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

It's a tale of two hairpieces. The producers of “The Wolf of Wall Street” are biting back at one unhappy broker's $25 million defamation suit against the Oscar-nominated film, claiming in court filings that their right to free speech supersedes his right to privacy. In court filings, Paramount Pictures and Red Granite Productions are asking a New York federal judge do dismiss the suit by Andrew Greene, a former employee of Stratton Oakmont, and noting that his isn't the only thinly disguised receding hairline to inspire a key character in the Oscar-nominated film. »

Christopher Evan Welch Died 4 Months Before His Breakout Role in Silicon Valley: A Look at His Career

3 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with one of my editors here about potential interviews with cast members of the new HBO comedy Silicon Valley. "We got to get the weirdo angel investor," he said. I agreed. In a hilarious pilot full of standout characters, Peter Gregory was maybe the most dynamic, or at least the strangest. And, having seen the next few episodes, I can attest that the show triples-down on his oddness. I was excited to talk to the actor who plays Gregory. That was until Friday, when I got a series of IMs from my editor. It started with, "So, the guy that plays Peter Gregory in Silicon Valley" and included a link to his IMDb page. There it was: Christopher Evan Welch died on Monday, December 2, 2013 at age 48, after a three-year battle with lung cancer. Maybe there were some people who knew »

‘Battlestar Galactica’ Movie Gets New Life at Universal (Exclusive)

22 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal is ramping up a movie version of the sci-fi franchise “Battlestar Galactica,” aiming to develop the film as a complete reimagining of the story.

Transcendence” writer Jack Paglen has signed on to write the screenplay. Paglen has also committed to Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” sequel for Fox that will start production this fall.

Original series creator Glen Larson will produce the “Battlestar Galactica” film.

“Galactica” generated two TV series. The first, starring Lorne Greene and Richard Hatch, ran during 1978-79 season and was centered on humans engaged in a lengthy war against a cybernetic race known as the Cylons while searcing for Earth.

In 2003, a reimagined “Battlestar Galactica” miniseries aired on Sci Fi Channel. The second series, starring Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, went on to run for four seasons.

In 2009, speculation emerged that Bryan Singer was attached to direct a “Battlestar Galactica” movie.

James Holmes Asks for Change of Venue in Aurora Shooting Trial

1 hour ago | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Lawyers for the man accused of murdering 12 people in a Colorado movie theater in 2012 have requested that his trial, scheduled for October in Arapahoe County, be moved to a more neutral location. When James Holmes was arrested for a shooting rampage during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, the story drew hundreds of media outlets to Aurora, Colo. Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the massacre that left 12 people dead and injured 58 more. In a motion for venue change filed on Monday, his lawyers argue that media coverage has tainted the potential jury pool against their client. »

Battlestar Galactica Movie in Development

11 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Variety reports that Universal is developing a Battlestar Galactica movie, with Transcendence writer Jack Paglen working on the script and the original series' creator, Glen Larson, producing. Being called a "complete reimagining," the movie won't necessarily have anything to do with the cult and critical favorite version of the story from the mid-'00s. As of right now, it doesn't appear Ronald D. Moore will be involved. Either way, it will feature a hell of a lot more Cylons than that Jungle Book remake, so that's something. »

Rascal Flatts Cops to Lip-Syncing at Acm Awards

Do the members of Rascal Flatts wish they could rewind their controversial performance at the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards Sunday night? The band took to social media Monday to defend themselves after fans complained that the group - and, in particular, lead singer Gary LeVox - appeared to lip-sync their new song "Rewind" during the Las Vegas awards show. "After having performed several shows earlier in the week, Gary lost his voice. So, instead of canceling our commitment to do the show, we made a last minute decision to lip-sync. We've never done it before, and we're obviously not very good at it. »

Winona Ryder on Meryl Streep and That Thwarted Heathers Sequel

26 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Last week's Heathers oral history in Entertainment Weekly revealed that not only were there plans for a Heathers sequel, but that Winona Ryder actually went so far as to proposition Meryl Streep on the set of The House of the Spirits to co-star in it. Just imagine that bright red bow in Streep's hair: "It’s Veronica, years later, she’s in Washington. She’s somehow erased her past. And she’s being blackmailed, there’s like men in suits who know about the Westerberg murders ... And I remember the First Lady was Meryl Streep."But when Vulture caught up with her at last night's premiere of the BBC drama Turks & Caicos and mentioned that Meryl was supposed to be there that evening (she didn't show), Ryder immediately knew where our line of questioning was going. "Oh, don't bring up the Heathers sequel! That was one of those jokes, like one of those old things. »

Chile’s Alejandro Fernandez Almendras, Jirafa Films Ink Two-Pic Production Alliance (Exclusive)

32 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Panama City – Fresh off a Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for “To Kill a Man,” Chilean writer-director Alejandro Fernandez Almendras has signed a two-pic deal with top Chilean production house Jirafa Films.

Jirafa’s Augusto Matte will produce both pics. The alliance between one of Chile’s highest-profile directors and one of its foremost production forces – “To Kill” also won Locarno’s Carte Blanche, has sealed multiple sales for Film Factory; Jirafa’s credits include Alicia Scherson’s “The Future,” Marcela Said’s “The Summer of Flying Fish” – looks like one of Chile’s signature deals of 2014.

The partnership also looks set to accelerate the already robust diversification of Chile’s movie industry, as Almendras and Jirafa broaden their output from arthouse into what Jirafa’s Augusto Matte terms Latino indie production, and could well spell Almendras’ English-language debut. Also, as the financing Chilean films can pull down at home hits a ceiling, »

Jumping the ‘Sharknado 2: The Second One’

The second installment of Syfy’s “Sharknado” juggernaut promises to be just as cheesy-goofy as the original that took social media by storm last summer.

“It still feels like we’re making the first movie,” said helmer Anthony C. Ferrante of “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” set to bow on July 30 with stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid reprising their roles as bomb-wielding shark slayers.

Mark McGrath, Kari Wurher and Judah Friedlander also join the cast. Confirmed celeb cameos include Richard Kind, Kelly Osbourne, Matt Lauer and Judd Hirsch.

“That sort of energy is still there,” Ferrante explained to a room of journos gathered Tuesday for NBCUniversal’s Summer Press Day at the Langham Huntington in Pasadena, Calif. “When we set out to make the second one the idea was to come up with crazier things. If we stayed in Los Angeles it would have been boring, but we’re in New York City, »

'Last Comic Standing' won't be 'amateur-istic' when it returns

After four years off the air, "Last Comic Standing" is returning with a star co-executive producer (Wanda Sykes), new judges, an intriguing prize and a new selection process. But when new judge Keenen Ivory Wayans answered the question, he went for the joke. "Instead of ten drunks in the audience, you get the three of us," he said with a smile. That's funny, but downplays how different this "Last Comic Standing" is going to be. "This season, the prize isn't just $250,000 but a development deal at NBC," executive producer Page Hurwitz said. "We'd like to find the next big thing in comedy who could have their own show on NBC. I don't think that's existed before on NBC." The cattle calls of previous seasons have also been scrapped. "We did things differently this season," Hurwitz added. "Previously, there was always an open call search. Wanda and I looked at thousands »

Saltz on George W. Bush’s Painterly Promise Unfulfilled

41 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

When I look at the paintings of George W. Bush, it’s like seeing an incubus on America, as freakish and off-putting as his presidency was. Yet the art critic in me has to grant that if I stumbled on three or four of Bush's paintings in a flea market by an anonymous artist, I'd snap them right up. The first batch of his paintings we saw, in 2012, were of landscapes, churches, Bush himself in the bathtub, and other scenes, and I liked them for their sheer weird obliviousness, their zonked-out earnest attempts at figuration, the odd feel for form and space, light, color, and softly contoured edges. If I didn't know they were by Bush, I'd imagine they were made by a diligent high-school senior, maybe a beauty queen perfecting her talent, maybe a mischievous frat boy spying on his father, possibly an onanist. I liked these amateurish paintings »
