The Buzz: Captain America's legion has grown in the nearly three years since his first solo outing, and in that time Marvel has learned how to scientifically engineer their movies to appeal to the widest fan base possible. So whether you thought the original was perfect, a bit too corny, or perhaps stuffy, the sequel has reportedly been fine tuned to an almost alarming degree, and the impressive $75 million international opening weekend is a testament to the worldwide appeal the character has developed.
Dom Hemingway (2013)
After spending 12 years in prison for keeping his mouth shut, notorious safe-cracker Dom Hemingway is back on the streets of London looking to collect what he's owed.
Director:Richard Shepard |

The Buzz: Writer/director Richard Shepard has been working mostly in TV since his experiencing an indie-film breakthrough, The Matador, back in 2005. His career heated up again thanks to "Girls", where he has directed a handful of episodes, some of them featuring the incredible Richard E. Grant, who co-stars here. Jude Law finds himself surrounded by a wonderful principal cast who have found success on television; Law himself seems like a prime candidate for a cable-TV program, right?
Under the Skin (2013) - [Limited]
An alien seductress preys upon hitchhikers in Scotland.
Director:Jonathan Glazer |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Jonathan Glazer's growing cult audience is hailing him as the new flesh - an honorary descendant of David Cronenberg. Said differently, not every director could coach a curious accent out of Scarlett Johansson while disregarding traditional cinematic form and earn rave reviews.
Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013) - [Limited]
The continuation of Joe's sexually dictated life delves into the darker aspects of her adult life and what led to her being in Seligman's care.
Director:Lars von Trier |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Someday, someone will stitch together the most graphic moments of the cinematic relationship between Lars von Trier and Charlotte Gainsbourg; while we wait for that tribute to service, it's almost time to think about when von Trier will strike next and what the subject matter will be. Perhaps he will be directed by Gainsbourg (!).
The Unknown Known (2013) - [Limited]
Former United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, discusses his career in Washington D.C. from his days as a congressman in the early 1960s to planning the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Director:Errol Morris |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The only way to make this documentary more frightening would be to shoot it found-footage style. The thought of watching Donald Rumsfeld smile and allude to the machinations of his career is one of the most terrifying prospects on the big screen in some time.
Alan Partridge (2013) - [Limited]
When famous DJ Alan Partridge's radio station is taken over by a new media conglomerate, it sets in motion a chain of events which see Alan having to work with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege.
Director:Declan Lowney |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Director Declan Lowney has worked with some of the greatest UK comedic imports in his past -- "Little Britain" and "Moone Boy" are two of many highlights on his resume -- and now he reunites with Steve Coogan to bring Alan Partridge from the DJ booth to the big screen.
Island of Lemurs: Madagascar (2014)
A documentary that follows Dr. Patricia C. Wright's mission to help lemurs, the highly evolved creatures who arrived on Madagascar millions of years ago as castaways but are now highly endangered.
Director:David Douglas |
|

The Buzz: One of the world's most curious primate species gets the IMAX treatment courtesy of David Douglas, who is no stranger to the format; he recently saw great success with Born to Be Wild.

The Buzz: Finally seeing a proper release over three years after Halle Berry's Golden Globe nomination for her starring role, that's the very thing that could drum up some audience interest in Geofrrey Sax's true-life drama, which was actually filmed in 2008.
Afflicted (2013) - [Limited]
Two best friends see their trip of a lifetime take a dark turn when one of them is struck by a mysterious affliction. Now, in a foreign land, they race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely.

The Buzz: CBS Films gets into the found-footage niche market with this, the feature debut from filmmaking duo Derek Lee and Clif Prowse, who won big at last year's Fantastic Fest, where Afflicted won Best Director, Screenplay, and Best Picture. Odd that there's been very little promotion for the release though.
