Mr Peabody & Sherman claims No.1 at Us box office - top ten in full

3 hours ago | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Mr Peabody and Sherman has climbed to the number one spot at the Us box office.

The DreamWorks animation fell 34% in its second week of release to an estimated $21.2 million, but fought off competition from Aaron Paul's Need for Speed.

The film - featuring the voice of Ty Burrell - lost out to 300: Rise of An Empire last weekend. The Noam Murro-directed sequel slipped to second place this week, dropping 58% to $19.1m.

Video game adaptation Need for Speed debuted in third place with $17.8m.

Liam Neeson's thriller Non-Stop dropped to four on this week's countdown, with earnings of $10.6m. The film has now taken $68.8 million and has surpassed Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra's Unknown.

Tyler Perry's The Single Mums Club had an underwhelming opening weekend, taking a total of $8.3m. It is the lowest opening for a Tyler Perry-directed movie.

Box Office: Smart Dogs, Ab'ed Warriors, and Speed Racers

3 hours ago | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Because animated films have good legs at the box office, Mr Peabody continued to walk up right and traded places with the muscle-bound warriors of the 300 sequel for first place.

Box Office

01 Mr Peabody & Sherman $21.2 (cum. $63.1) Tim's thoughts

02 300: Rise Of An Empire $19.1 (cum. $78.3)

03 Need For Speed $17.8 *New*

04 Non-stop  $10.6 (cum. $68.8) Amir's Review

05 Tyler Perry'S Single Mom'S Club $8.3 *new*

06 The Lego Movie $7.7 (cum. $236.9) Nathaniel's Review

07 Son Of God $5.4 (cum. $50.8)

08 The Grand Budapest Hotel $3.6 (cum. $4.7)

09 Frozen $2.1 (cum. $396.3) Review | Let it Go | Jonathan Groff Interview

10 Veronica Mars $2.0 *New*

The Lego Movie is way way out front for biggest hit of 2014 thus far but I have to admit that I'm surprised that Frozen which is now 2013's third biggest hit, far exceeding anyone's expectations, is folding up and moving out of theaters for DVD already. If they had kept milking it a bit, it probably could have passed Iron Man 3's gross. »

Box Office: 'Peabody and Sherman' pull ahead of '300' while 'Need for Speed' stalls

5 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Los Angeles (AP) — Chasing down the top spot at the box office after debuting at No. 2 last week, "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" took the lead in its second weekend. The DreamWorks animated film about the time-traveling adventures of a genius dog and the human son he adopted earned $21.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The 3-D kiddie-jaunt features voices from "Modern Family" stars Ty Burrell and Ariel Winter. "Our mid-week numbers were very strong indicating good and positive word of mouth," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at Twentieth Century Fox. "If anything, this is exceeding (expectations). It's a combination of likable characters and it's a nostalgia play for those who are familiar with the show." Mr. Peabody and Sherman first appeared in the 1950s and early 1960s on the show "Peabody's Improbable History," a segment within the animated television series "Rocky and His Friends" and later "The Bullwinkle Show. »

Weekend Box Office: Family-Friendly Mr. Peabody & Sherman Takes the Checkered Flag, 300 Sequel Falls to Second, While Need For Speed Stalls in Third

8 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A trio of new debuts were no match for Mr. Peabody & Sherman, the family-friendly adventure feature from DreamWorks Animation.  The animated duo took the top spot from 300: Rise of an Empire, making it one of only two films to actually move up in the top ten rankings.  The other film?  Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, which debuted huge last week in only a few theaters, and moved up to eighth during its first weekend of wide release. The weekend was a disappointing one both critically and financially for Scott Waugh's street-racing adaptation, Need for Speed.  Perhaps the action-driven Non-Stop, which landed in fourth place, proved too much box office competition on an otherwise unexciting weekend of non-new releases.  Fandom-driven films Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club and the Kickstarted Veronica Mars movie turned in fifth and tenth debut spots respectively. A Letter to Mark Burnett: Faith-Based Films Vs. Culture Wars

13 March 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Memo to: Mark Burnett

Apparently you are not content just to be television’s most prolific producer, Mark, so you have now committed yourself to a new career as a film producer — one with a specific mission. You want Hollywood to give God a comeback.

To this end, you’ve mobilized tens of millions of dollars to turn a string of outtakes and re-edited footage into a motion picture, “Son of God,” which opened to $25.6 million on 3,254 screens last week (of course, you and your allies pre-bought many of the tickets).

The film is not really new; much of the footage came from your 2013 TV miniseries, “The Bible,” with some new scenes added. While its box office numbers have made you an instant folk hero in the evangelical Christian community, you might also note that the picture is opening in the middle of a culture war that will impact the »

Box Office: ‘Noah’ On Course for $35 Million-Plus Opening

10 March 2014 6:02 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

One of the first of many biblical-themed movies to flood the box office in 2014, Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah” is on track for a $35 million-plus Stateside opening later this month.

Insiders predict that the drama could gross upwards of $40 million when it hits theaters on March 28, though Paramount is said to be estimating a lower $27.5 million to downplay expectations for the expensive production.

Paramount-New Regency’s $130 million Biblical epic, starring Russell Crowe, has proven especially difficult to measure given the flurry of controversy it’s generated in the last couple of months among Christians — one of its targeted demographic groups.

The film, co-starring Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins and “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson, deviates from the Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark, forcing Paramount to add a recent disclaimer that the film doesn’t directly mirror the Biblical tale.

“The film was made for believers and non-believers,” Aronofsky told Variety »

Box Office Actuals for '300: Rise of an Empire', 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman', 'Non-Stop' and 'Son of God'

10 March 2014 1:16 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The weekend actuals are in and 300: Rise of an Empire actually finished spot on with its estimate, $45 million. The reported budget, however, went up another $10 million to $110m, nearly double the original, but with another $87.8 million from overseas markets on opening weekend, Rise of an Empire enjoyed a $132.8 million worldwide opening. In second is Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which dipped $300,000 from estimates to $32.3 million on a budget of $145 million, but it too did well overseas, bringing in an additional $65.8 million. The film scored an "A" CinemaScore so just maybe it can have a nice holdover and do a little more damage than its middling domestic performance so far. As for the holdovers, both Non-Stop and Son of God did a little better than estimated, Non-Stop only dropping 45.2% from its opening weekend with Son of God still the largest drop in the top ten at 59.5%. In the end 12 Years a Slave got its 116.3% Oscar bump, »

Box Office Breakdown: 300 Seizes Glory Against Peabody

10 March 2014 6:48 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

This past weekend at the box office saw the release of a long gestating sequel (who many people didn't think was necessary) and another animated adventure based on a beloved cartoon property.  Under most circumstances, this would generally mean the kids' movie would win out, but turns out Rise of an Empire is actually pretty good!  Come inside to check out the full box office numbers for this past weekend.

Don't get me wrong here, Mr. Peabody & Sherman did a pretty good job, and for the most part the 'race' at this weekend's box office was pretty close.  Even with the power of nostalgia, however, they couldn't topple the ab-filled spectacle of 300: Rise of an Empire, which pulled in an impressive $45 million haul.  Not bad for a sequel so many people complained about not needing.  If it manages to keep this momentum up, it's looking likely another film could be happening. »

Zack Snyder's gorefest slaughters competition at the cinemas, Grand Budapest Hotel makes a grand appearance and Oscars winners get box-office boost

300 rules the roost

Critical scoffing about its fanboy roots notwithstanding, 300: Rise of an Empire got the last laugh at the weekend. A sequel to the 2007 movie that established director Zack Snyder as a genre rock star, the Warner Bros action film smashed its way to the top of the charts in North America. Its estimated $45.1m (£27m) haul contributed to a $132.9m global assault. Next weekend's action release Need for Speed may apply the brakes to a degree, but that movie's largely unknown cast and brand may struggle to stop Rise of an Empire from holding on to pole position for a second weekend. And if that's not enough of a belaboured car racing metaphor for you, try this for size: »

Box Office Weekend: 300 Conquers Peabody In Number, If Not Critics

9 March 2014 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

Lackluster reviews for 300: Rise of an Empire, the sequel to the 2007 big budget story of the 300 Spartans, were not enough to keep audiences away as it earned the top spot at the box office. At an estimated $45.1 million, it beat Mr. Peabody & Sherman which, despite good reviews, earned an estimated $32.5 million, which leaves it at a fair pace behind its $145 million costs. Still, both are doing very well overseas, and likely to make back their costs in worldwide earnings, if not domestically.

Liam Neeson is making a good case with Non-Stop, breaking even for its second week with an estimated $15.4 million. The Lego Movie continues to impress, with an estimated $11 million in its fifth week and $225 million in total domestic box office, while Son of God sits in a state of limbo, its estimated $10 million and domestic total of $41.5 million no indicator of success as it has not reported its costs. »
