Deal will lead to "global leadership in legal academic publishing"

January 2006:

Taylor & Francis Group, an Informa business, has acquired the entire issued share capital of the academic law specialist, Cavendish Publishing for an undisclosed sum.

The shareholders of Cavendish Publishing were advised by Quayle Munro.

Cavendish, whose imprints include Cavendish Australia, Glasshouse Press, Birkbeck Law Press and UCL (University College London) Press, will sit alongside the Social Science/Humanities list of Routledge, and operate under a brand new name - Routledge-Cavendish.

Cavendish is one of UK's leading independent law textbook and academic publishers. In addition to publishing for the UK market, the company also publishes for the Caribbean, South Pacific and Australasian regions. Cavendish was a pioneer in e-book delivery, and all content is available in print, electronic and digital formats as e-books, as well as individual e-chapters.

Taylor & Francis has a long tradition in the area of scholarly books and journals publishing for the academic community. Building on over two centuries' experience, it has grown rapidly over the last two decades to become a leading international academic publisher. With offices throughout the world, the academic business of Informa publishes more than 1,000 journals and over 2,500 new books each year, with a books backlist in excess of 45,000 specialist titles

Roger Horton, CEO of Taylor & Francis Group, commented, "We have for some time been impressed with the growth and professionalism of Cavendish Publishing, and in particular its academic law list. This acquisition is good news for us, providing a great platform for us to invest and grow this sector of publishing."

Sonny Leong, Executive Chairman of Cavendish Publishing, said, "This is very exciting for all of us and we are pleased with our new home at Taylor & Francis. We have for the last decade witnessed rapid changes taking place in textbook and academic teaching and this has had tremendous impact on the way we publish for those markets. Consequently publishers have to react quickly to their needs in order to remain competitive and one step ahead. With the backing of the T&F Group, we will be able to do so, thus enabling Routledge-Cavendish to be a global leader in academic law publishing."

Kit van Tulleken, Quayle Munro, who advised Cavendish said "This is the perfect union, combining Cavendish's expertise in legal publishing with the extensive international reach of Taylor & Francis. The continued involvement of Sonny Leong acting as the leader and developer of this important area is extremely positive. I am sure we shall see both businesses thrive as a result of this acquisition."
