'Mad Men' at Paleyfest: Jon Hamm's YouTube recommendation, a staring contest and more

There's a parallel universe somewhere in which "Mad Men" is a straight-up comedy, and it's not very far from our own.

The Emmy-winning series has featured plenty of comedic moments over the years, and Friday (March 21) at the 2014 Paley Festival, the cast's way with a funny line was on full display. Even before the first question, the show's cast was drawing laughs, as when Jon Hamm made an exaggerated come-hither face at the sound guy attaching his mic. A very appreciative audience couldn't get enough of it.

The physical humor reached its peak with a question from a fan about how the actors convey meaning in a scene where they don't have any dialogue. Cue Hamm making a serious face at moderator Mike Schneider from TV Guide, which led to a staring contest that lasted at least a full minute, to the amazement of the rest of the cast and »

'Sorority Surrogate': The 11 craziest moments from Lifetime's insane surrogacy nightmare

It's an age old story: Girl loses scholarship, girl becomes surrogate for money, insane former congresswoman mother-in-law of woman girl is carrying baby for kidnaps girl after son and daughter-in-law are killed in arranged accident.

Or, at least, that's the nonsense Lifetime was peddling during their latest woman-in-peril original films, "Sorority Surrogate," on Saturday (March 22). The movie, starring "Degrassi: The Next Generation" alum Cassie Steele (Manny Santos 4Eva!) as the aforementioned "girl" Valerie, was predictably out of its mind. What follows are the 11 craziest moments.

1. Valerie loses her scholarship because her drunk of a father decides to list her as a dependent on his taxes and she's just like, "Oh well, I guess I'll quit school and not do anything about this."

2. This sentence, uttered by Valerie, about the rich girls at her university: "Jackie's taking calculus just to count her trust fund!"

3. Valerie's boyfriend Kyle with that one dumb »

'Da Vinci's Demons' Season 2 review: Starz drama hits the ground running, continuing its wild look at 'history'

If it wasn't clear by the time Season 1 of "Da Vinci's Demons" ended, Saturday's (March 22) Season 2 premiere of the Starz hit leaves no shadow of a doubt that this series has no interest in being historically accurate.

Instead, creator David Goyer seems quite intent on delivering a rather deliriously insane period piece that takes Leonardo da Vinci to places history buffs never imagined. Quite literally, in fact, as the premiere opens with the famed artist/inventor (played with gusto by Tom Riley) in the New World, a locale he certainly never visited in real life.

But therein lies the fun of the series. This is a show where the premiere hour hinges on da Vinci inventing the blood transfusion -- something that, historically, wasn't invented for a full 100 years after his death -- on the spot to rescue a wounded Lorenzo de Medici (Elliot Cowan). It's absolutely lunacy, but if »

'John Leguizamo's Ghetto Klown' preview: Fighting 'fugly' Patrick Swayze in drag

Looking back on his colorful life thus far for laughs, John Leguizamo's "Ghetto Klown" is packed to the gills with stories about the actor's early life in Queens and his eventual stardom.

One such story in the special, a filmed version of his 2011 one-man Broadway show premiering on HBO on Saturday (March 22), finds Leguizamo recounting a dust-up with Patrick Swayze on the set of the campy drag classic "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar."

In the Nsfw preview clip above, Leguizamo hilariously retells the incident that led to a brawl between the two actors -- who were dressed in their character's drag at the time. It creates quite an amusing image, to say the least.

"John Leguizamo's Ghetto Klown" premieres on Saturday, March 22 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on HBO. »

TV news and notes:

- NBC has yet to reveal the due date for their upcoming "Rosemary's Baby" miniseries, starring Zoe Saldana in the iconic role, but the network has released the first teaser for the adaptation. The frustratingly brief clip may not offer a glimpse at any actual footage, but it certainly sets an ominous tone. The mini, which also stars "Suits" star Patrick J. Adams, is expected this summer.

- "State of Affairs," NBC's political drama pilot starring Katherine Heigl, has found its president. Alfre Woodard ("Desperate Housewives") will play President Roberta Payton, who hires Heigl's maverick CIA officer to be her daily legal briefer. [THR]

'Arrow' Season 2: Harley Quinn voiced by 'Teen Titans' star Tara Strong - will she be back?

"Arrow" fans didn't exactly get a look at Harley Quinn in the "Suicide Squad" episode of Season 2. But at least the deranged woman's voice was heard. With a voice "Teen Titans" star Tara Strong, could there be more Harley Quinn coming soon?

The answer may be an official maybe. Considering that the character was described only as "Deranged Squad Female" in the "Arrow" episode, the show is a long way from actually giving her a real role. Even information that this was Harley Quinn came from roundabout sources.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim confirmed that Harley Quinn was indeed there. And one of the episode's writers, Keto Shimizu, tweeted about the actress and character from the set.

Me and the delightful @tarastrong when she came in to do the voice of #HarleyQuinn. #Arrow #SuicideSquad pic.twitter.com/Gn3VckTsPa

'Da Vinci's Demons' Season 2 brings a Miss Bogota and more sexy style to the Renaissance Man

Costume designers shop for characters where they imagine the characters would buy clothes. That line of thinking has savvy designers going through the racks at Target for suburban moms and walking through the boutiques at Saks for executives.

Logical, but what's a costume designer to do when the show happens to be set during the Renaissance, and the main character happens to be a pivotal man in history?

For Starz's "Da Vinci's Demons," returning for its second season Saturday, March 22, it means creating. Da Vinci (Tom Riley) has a new jacket, since his last one was destroyed in the carnage of last season's cliffhanger.

"He has an effortless style; no great thought goes into what he wears, but because of his remarkable talent and genius, everything he picks has a uniqueness," costume designer Trisha Biggar tells Zap2it.

Da Vinci keeps a slim silhouette. The new jacket is dark brown »

'The Mentalist' says goodbye to Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman

Fans of "The Mentalist" have known since last summer that two of the show's regulars, Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti, would be leaving the series. Now their farewell episode is upon us.

Sunday's (March 23) episode, "White as the Driven Snow," will be the last episode for their characters, and they're not going out quietly. Van Pelt (Righetti) was kidnapped at the end of last week's show, and Sunday's episode centers on Rigsby's (Yeoman) and Jane's (Simon Baker) frantic search for her.

"It's a very dynamic episode," Yeoman tells TV Guide. "I think our show pushed the envelope. ... It felt very different than what we've done."

Rigsby and Van Pelt's exits were set up earlier in the season: In the two-year time jump that followed the conclusion of the Red John story and the dismantling of the Cbi, the couple moved into the private sector and had a baby. They've been »

'Alice in Arabia' pilot scrapped by ABC Family amid growing backlash

21 March 2014 9:30 PM, PDT

Just four days after putting drama project "Alice in Arabia" into development with a pilot greenlight, ABC Family is washing its hands of the potential series in the wake of a growing backlash.

"The current conversation surrounding our pilot was not what we had envisioned and is certainly not conducive to the creative process, so we've decided not to move forward with this project," the network says in a statement released to Deadline on Friday (March 21).

Shortly after the project, described as "a high-staked drama series about a rebellious American teenage girl who, after tragedy befalls her parents, is unknowingly kidnapped by her extended family, who are Saudi Arabian," was announced on Monday, controversy erupted.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations made their disapproval clear with an open letter calling on ABC Family to meet with Muslim and Arab-American community leaders to address potential stereotyping:

'Game of Thrones': Showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss sign on for Seasons 5 and 6

21 March 2014 7:00 PM, PDT

Worry not, "Game of Thrones" fans. The brutal adventures of the world of Westeros will be around on TV for some time to come.

HBO has secured a deal with the hit series' creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss to continue on as showrunners for two more season, Entertainment Weekly reports. The new deal keeps the duo with the show through a proposed Season 6, though the show has yet to be formally renewed for Season 5. This news comes on the heels of the pair admitting the endgame for the series is seven or eight seasons.

The complex drama, based on George R.R. Martin's bestselling novels, is the network's most-watched series of all time (averaging 14.3 million viewers in Season 3 across all platforms) and is only bested by "The Sopranos" at its most popular show of all time.

'Community' Season 5, episode 11 gets animated for 'G.I. Jeff'

21 March 2014 6:30 PM, PDT

"Community" is no stranger to animation. Prior to Season 5's "G.I. Jeff" (airing Thursday, April 3), the bizarre comedy had already aired two mainly animated episodes: "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas" (stop-motion) and "Digital Estate Planning" (8-bit computer graphics).

For the Season 5 version of animation, however, episode 11 is taking the "G.I. Joe" route in tribute to the 1980s animated series.

What's going on here? "This [episode] has a very specific story reason for it," executive producer Chris McKenna tells EW.com. "I don't want to give too much away, but our characters find themselves in a 'Wizard of Oz'-type journey through the world of 'G.I. Joe' ... There's a mystery that Jeff in particular has to get to the bottom of."

Considering that Jeff Winger would have been about the right age to enjoy "G.I. Joe" cartoons back in the day, that does make sense.

Exactly how much "G.I. Joe" will make it into "G. »

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that ABC is launching "Bachelor in Paradise" this summer, which will transport your favorite franchise heroes and villains to a tropical locale to live in an "isolated romantic paradise" and hopefully find Mr. or Ms. Right (Now).

There will be a rose ceremony, but it has not yet been revealed if someone will go home each week. Also, the show will only run for six episodes. But the series does promise "new twists, shocking surprises and unexpected guests."

Chris Harrison is the host, of course, and cast members will be announced at a later date.

WWE Network: Watch pitch reel for proposed bounty hunter series starring a former wrestler

21 March 2014 5:30 PM, PDT

Warning: The above video contains strong language that is not work-appropriate.

With a whole network to fill up, WWE is looking for new programming to bring to its fans. Those expecting wall-to-wall wrestling might be surprised by some of the ideas being tossed around.

Eight different proposed shows were shared with fans via an email survey, most of which don't include in-ring action. Among the proposed series are "WWE Prankdown," which features wrestlers pulling practical jokes, and "WWE Ultimate Challenge," which sounds quite a bit like "The Amazing Race."

Another familiar-sounding series is "Blackman's Bounties." The show features former WWE wrestler Steve Blackman in his career as a bounty hunter, tracking down those who have jumped bail. It's a lot like "Dog: The Bounty Hunter," but with a lot more cursing and way less pep talks for those they catch.

The show's gimmick seems to be that Blackman's team of »

'The Vampire Diaries' promo: Shady siblings Luke and Liv make their move in 'Rescue Me'

21 March 2014 3:50 PM, PDT

If you thought Thursday's (March 20) episode of "The Vampire Diaries" was intense, start preparing yourself now for next week's episode, "Rescue Me." Because based on the promo and the spoiler-heavy synopsis for the March 27 episode, things are about to get crazy.

At the end of "While You Were Sleeping," Elena and Damon tried to break up, but of course they just ended back in bed together. Will they be able to break up for good in the cold light of day, or will they keep falling back in bed (we don't blame them one bit ... see above photo)? Plus, they picked the worst timing to complicate their relationship, since they have to play surrogate parents for Jeremy at his parent-teacher conference at school, and it turns out he's not doing so well in his classes. That's probably since he spends so much time at Whitmore College with Bonnie. Too bad »

'Mad Men' Season 7: Roger Sterling in his element in latest teaser

The blitz of airport-themed promo imagery for Season 7 of "Mad Men" continues. The latest piece of the puzzle, which you can see exclusively on Zap2it, is this short clip of Roger Sterling (John Slattery).

Roger looks pretty at ease in the video, which is an extended version of his appearance in a 30-second teaser released earlier this week. That's pretty much his natural state, but in particular when he's got a cigarette in hand, an attractive younger woman sitting across from him and another passing through his field of vision. All that's missing is a highball.

The first half of "Mad Men" Season 7 premieres Sunday, April 13 on AMC, with the final seven episodes to follow in 2015. »
