Google said it has begun working with eyewear company Luxottica to create Ray-Ban and Oakley versions of its Glass wearable device.

Google Glass announces partnership with maker of Ray-Ban, Oakley

Google announced a major partnership for its Glass wearable device with Luxottica, the company behind several popular eyewear brands that include Ray-Ban and Oakley.

The Mountain View, Calif., tech giant said Luxottica will lend Glass its expertise in eyewear design and manufacturing. Additionally, Luxottica's thousands of retail locations should help Google later on, when the tech company begins to sell Glass to the general public.

Among the other brands made by Luxottica are Vogue-Eyewear, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli and Arnette. But to start, Google said it will be focusing on bringing Glass together with Luxottica's Oakley and Ray-Ban brands.

Aaron Levie is co-founder and CEO of Box Inc. which made public on Monday its plans to raise up to $250 million in an initial public offering.

Box Inc. publicly files for hotly anticipated IPO

SAN FRANCISCO -- Box Inc. has made public its plans to raise up to $250 million in an initial public offering, setting the stage for one of the most hotly anticipated offerings to come out of Silicon Valley so far this year.

Box said it plans to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BOX.

The Los Altos, Calif., online storage company plans to use at least half of the net proceeds for sales and marketing and other initiatives to expand its business as it faces growing competition from technology giants such as Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. and well-funded start-ups such as Dropbox Inc.

Box filed confidential papers for an IPO in January, taking advantage of a law that allows start-ups to avoid public scrutiny for a time.

The company, which handles online storage for businesses, made the filing public Monday.

In the filing, Box said revenue was $124.2 million for the year that ended Jan. 31, up from $58.8 million the previous year.

Its loss widened to $168.9...

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, says she declined a plea from Google to limit her company's hiring of the search-engine giant's employees.

Facebook refused to limit hiring of Google employees, Sandberg says

SAN FRANCISCO -- Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said she declined to limit her company's hiring of Google employees after being approached by two senior executives at the Internet giant.

Sandberg made the declaration in a filing in San Jose federal court on Friday before a high-profile trial in May that will determine whether Google, Apple, Intel and Adobe illegally agreed not to recruit each other's employees.

Sandberg and Facebook are not involved in the case, which grew out of a Department of Justice investigation that was settled in 2010.

The plaintiffs are software and hardware engineers, programmers, Web developers and other technology workers who allege their wages were kept artificially low by secret non-solicitation agreements between the companies.

Sandberg worked at Google and was a top executive there until 2008, when she left for Facebook. That year, she received separate calls from two Google executives expressing concern about a large number of Google...

Move over Flappy Bird: The latest gaming craze is 2048

The (Flappy) Bird is no longer the word -- the latest craze is all about a puzzle game called 2048.

The game, which can be played through the Web, requires that users pair tiles containing similar numbers together to create tiles with larger figures.

The ultimate goal is to add up enough tiles to get one worth a total of 2,048, but the user must do so without filling up the playing field and locking him or herself up from making anymore moves.

The game was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli. His version is playable on computers as well as smartphones and tablets, and it was inspired by two other games that were released earlier this year: 1024 and Threes.

Google has released a new app that lets users easily beam pictures from their smartphones, tablets or laptops onto their TVs using the Chromecast streaming device.

The app is called Photowall, and it is the latest Chrome Experiment, which is software created by Google as a way to inspire outside developers on their own projects.

The idea is that with Photowall, users can show their photos to friends during social gatherings by beaming the pictures onto their TVs, rather than passing their smartphone around.

"Photowall for Chromecast is a new Chrome Experiment that lets people collaborate with images on the TV — using phones or tablets," the app description reads. "Anyone can take a picture and send it to a Photowall to instantly see it on the big screen."

California challenges Facebook argument on online teen privacy

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Federal Trade Commission and California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris say that Facebook is misinterpreting how a children’s privacy law applies to teen privacy in a move that could undercut the giant social network in a federal court case in California.

Facebook users sued the company for using their images in ads on the service without their consent and later settled the class-action lawsuit in 2012.

Children's advocates are challenging the settlement in an effort to require Facebook to get explicit permission from parents before using the personal information — as well as the images, likes and comments — of teens in advertising.

The advocates have asked the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to vacate the Facebook settlement. They say the settlement violates the law in seven states, including California, that require parents' permission before a child's image can be used in advertising.

Facebook argued that because the Children’s Online Privacy...

Twitter works to restore service in Turkey after ban

SAN FRANCISCO -- Twitter is working to get its service back up and running in Turkey after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pulled the plug on the social network.

“We stand with our users in Turkey who rely on Twitter as a vital communications platform,” Twitter’s policy team said in a tweet on Friday. “We hope to have full access returned soon.”

The ban was prompted by links posted to Twitter of audio clips that appeared to incriminate Erdogan in corruption ahead of local elections.

Erdogan used a court order to direct Turkey’s telecommunication authority to block Twitter in the country.

Turkish users of Twitter, who number 12 million, have found ways to get around the ban and have been protesting on Twitter.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul himself spoke out against the ban in a series of tweets.

The White House also issued a statement: “We oppose this restriction on the Turkish people’s access to information, which undermines their...

President Obama meets with tech CEOs over NSA spying

SAN FRANCISCO -- Six technology executives including Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt met with President Obama on Friday to discuss National Security Agency spying in the wake of revelations that the agency may have infected millions of computers around the world with malware.

Also at the meeting were CEOs Reed Hastings of Netflix, Drew Houston of Dropbox, Alex Karap of Palantir Technologies and Aaron Levie of Box.

The CEOs of Yahoo, Microsoft, LinkedIn and Twitter could not make the meeting.

The meeting comes ahead of a March 28 deadline for recommendations on how to end the NSA’s collection of bulk phone records.

Internet companies are closely following the issue because it could affect how the government intercepts Internet data as well.

Zuckerberg recently voiced the jointly held frustration of the tech CEOs that government spying is hurting their businesses around the world.
