Divergent,” the big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth's best-selling, young-adult adventure novels, conquered the domestic box office with a sizzling $56 million first weekend. It marks the second-best opening of the year — behind only the $69 million of “The Lego Movie” in February — and the futuristic sci-fi tale starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James also gave Lionsgate Entertainment a successful launch for its next teen franchise. The studio behind the “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” series has scheduled “Insurgent,” the sequel to “Divergent,” for next March, and the third film, “Allegiant,” is set for the same slot in 2016. “Divergent” dominated »

Jimmy Kimmel Challenges Ellen With Hillary, Bill and Chelsea Clinton Selfie (Photo)

22 March 2014 9:52 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Maybe it didn't have the Hollywood star power Ellen DeGeneres’ record-breaking Oscars selfie, but the former (and potential future) leader of the free world isn't bad company, either. Jimmy Kimmel spent his Saturday evening at the Clinton Global Initiative University in Tempe, Arizona, interviewing the former first family of Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton, which isn't a bad way to pass the time. After the conversation, he grabbed the three backstage (along with a few of the 1,000 students in attendance) to take a pic on his cell phone, which he then tweeted and added to Facebook. One assumes he'll also add. »

‘The Good Wife’ Surprise Earns Its ‘Shocker’ Label

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The adrenaline ante has been so upped on episodic dramas as to somewhat devalue the “shocker” label. So credit the producers of “The Good Wife” with delivering a genuine jolt in Sunday’s episode, precisely because the CBS series doesn’t rely on over-the-top “Omg” moments in the way, say, something like “Scandal” does.

Sunday’s episode (and Spoiler Alert if you haven’t watched) featured the death of a major character, in an unforeseen act of violence that had additional resonance precisely because “The Good Wife” isn’t one of those programs that normally settles story lines — or spikes ratings — with a bullet. That the character was Will Gardner — as played by Josh Charles, about as fundamental to the show as anyone save star Julianna Margulies — only magnified the emotional wallop.

Shrewdly, CBS teased the flight of episodes to come, indicating that Will’s death will guide the remaining arc. »

Apple and Comcast in Talks for Streaming Service

2 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

According to The Wall Street Journal, Comcast is in talks with Apple to provide support for a streaming-television service. In the proposed scenario, an unnamed Apple device would essentially act as a cable box, streaming live content and storing on-demand content and digital video recordings in the cloud. While a deal hasn't been finalized, Apple is hoping for "special treatment" from Comcast to avoid slow service to subscribers, a phrase which sounds a lot more like a mafia euphemism than it probably is. »

Film Review: ‘Queen’

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A bittersweet Bollywood comedy of self-discovery, Vikas Bahl’s “Queen” is a genuine word-of-mouth hit, a low-budget production that topped the Indian B.O. charts in its first two weeks of release. The surprisingly mild and sweet film tells the story of Rani (“queen” in Hindi), a naive young bride from Delhi who is devastated when her fiance calls things off, but decides to take her European honeymoon trip anyway, on her own. The character seems to have struck a nerve in India, and it may already have made a breakout movie star of 27-year-old Kangana Ranaut (“Krrish 3″), who has been winning awards and rave reviews in supporting roles for almost a decade.

Made for just under $2 million, “Queen” earned the equivalent of $8 million in its first two weeks. Although it opened on March 7 against the heavily promoted star vehicle “Gulaab Gang,” and on one-third the number of screens, »

Can ‘Cesar Chavez’ Finally Make Hollywood Pay Attention to Latino Audiences?

2 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

A little more than four years ago, Diego Luna sat down with the family of Cesar Chavez. He wanted their permission to make a movie about the late civil and labor rights icon, as well as their input into the script. They gave him the green light, but getting the same signal from a financier was more of a challenge. “At the beginning we did the normal rounds you do in the States. We went to the studios and we got rejected by every studio,” Luna told TheWrap last week. “They said, ‘It's great you guys are doing it, and show it. »

Alfre Woodard to Be Katherine Heigl's President

2 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

12 Years A Slave's Alfre Woodard will bring her Oscar-nominated gravitas to the role of President Roberta Payton in NBC's State of Affairs. Katherine Heigl stars as Charlie Whitney Tucker, a CIA agent plucked from her job to become the President's daily debriefer. The show has been described as "Scandal meets The West Wing," so by that logic we assume President Payton will be some kind of a sage, deceitful, compassionate megalomaniac who may or not have an affair with Katherine Heigl's character. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Heigl's Tucker is the ex-girlfriend of the President's late son, but if this show has one drop of Scandal in its blood, that means nothing about their potential erotic entanglement. Absolutely nothing. »

Last Comic Standing Gets Its Season Eight Judges

3 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

It seems the goal of reality show judge selection is to put contestants in a position to be dressed down by the very people who are their real-life personal idols. With that in mind, Last Comic Standing has done very well for itself. Roseanne Barr, Keenen Ivory Wayans and massively successful Canadian stand-up Russell Peters will join new host J.B. Smoove when Last Comic returns to NBC on May 22. Being of a generation that grew up listening to Roseanne's dry barbs, it sounds like a wonderful idea to bring them back to TV and hurl them into 100 comics' hopeful faces. »

How ‘The Good Wife’ Shocker Out-Scandalized ‘Scandal’

3 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

(Spoiler alert: Don't read this if you haven't seen Sunday's “Good Wife” or Thursday's “Scandal.”) “The Good Wife” creators Michelle and Robert King must have watched all the fuss over Thursday's “Scandal” surprise with plenty of amusement — because they knew their own show had an even bigger shock ahead. Sunday's “Good Wife” featured the shooting death of Josh Charles’ Will Gardner, and arrived just four days after “Scandal” made Twitter go wild over the death of James Novak (Dan Bucatinsky). Will's death was more surprising because Charles has been one of the show's leads since the beginning. Also read: ‘Scandal’ Shocker:. »

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000' Taking on National Geographic Reality Shows

The “Mystery Science Theater 3000” guys – well, the one guy and two robots – are coming back to TV. And this time it will be reality shows, rather than bad movies, that they'll be skewering. The trio hosted a cult series that ran for more than decade on the Comedy Channel and Sci-Fi Channel in which Michael J. Nelson and robots Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy) and Crow T. Robot (Bill Corbett) made snide, droll and almost always dead-on comments as the movie played in the background. They've continued to crack wise on their web site, Rifftrax.com, since leaving the »
