Protecting unborn babies from alcohol-related harm

19 March 2014 -- Alcohol and drug abuse during pregnancy can harm babies. It can also cause miscarriage, preterm birth, and stillbirth. If an unborn baby is exposed to alcohol it can be affected for life. Aboriginal women in Australia have shown how communities can take action to protect their women and babies from alcohol-related harm in pregnancy.

Supporting countries in the fight against NCDs

12 March 2014 -- Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) kill more than 36 million people each year. Nearly 80% of NCD deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. There are techniques to prevent and control NCDs that are very cost-effective and affordable for all Member States. WHO has developed a set of tools for the prevention and control of NCDs - from setting national targets and developing national multisectoral policies and plans to measuring results.

    Draft guideline on sugars intake: contribute to the public consultation

    WHO has launched a public consultation on its draft guideline on sugars intake. When finalized, the guideline will provide countries with recommendations on limiting the consumption of sugars to reduce public health problems like obesity and dental caries. Comments on the draft guideline will be accepted from 5 to 31 March 2014.

    The theme for World Tuberculosis Day 2014 is "Reach the 3 million". TB is curable, but current efforts to find, treat and cure everyone who gets ill with the disease are not sufficient. Of the 9 million people a year who get sick with TB, a third of them are "missed" by health systems.
