Water sanitation planning in South-East Asia Region
WHO works with several countries in the South-East Asia Region to improve their water quality and to support system planning and implementing improvements. World Water Day is 22 March. Here are examples of our work in the region:
ASHAS: improving rural women’s health
In India, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) form an essential link between the community and the health care delivery system. ASHAs, usually women, provide information, health education, and basic care. Each ASHA is responsible for around 1000 people. Saturday 8 March is International Women’s Day.
WHO opens public consultation on draft sugars guideline
Sugars intake is a concern for WHO South-East Asia Region. WHO is launching a public consultation on its draft guideline on sugars intake. When finalized, the guideline will provide countries with recommendations on limiting the consumption of sugars to reduce public health problems like obesity and dental caries (commonly referred to as tooth decay). Comments on the draft guideline will be accepted via the WHO web site from 5 to 31 March 2014.
WHO Regional Director applauds Maldives vision for universal health coverage
Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, commended the Government of Maldives and the Ministry of Health and Gender for their commitment and vision for universal health coverage for all its citizens. Dr Khetrapal Singh is on a two-day visit to Maldives.
