Non-Stop (2014)- Action | Mystery | Thriller
An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account.
Director:Jaume Collet-Serra |

The Buzz: Liam Neeson is the new Jason Statham since we're having difficulty distinguishing one of his action roles from another these days. This time out, he reunites with his Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra and takes to the skies over the Atlantic Ocean -- something we don't often see anymore in mainstream movies. We see Julianne Moore aboard the plane and don't imagine she just sits there the entire time, but we're wondering how exactly Oscar nominee Lupita Nyong'o fits into the narrative. Is she playing a baddie? Hope so!
Son of God (2014)- Drama
The life story of Jesus is told from his humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection.
Director:Christopher Spencer |

Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: It's easy to see why "Survivor" producer Mark Burnett put this film together in the wake of "The Bible"'s success after Burnett and company received huge ratings and three Emmy nominations for that mini-series. Any by "put together" we mean: the 10-hour mini-series was edited down into a 2-hour film. Once lower profile than Darren Aronofsky's Noah, advanced reports of the religious groups buying out entire theaters for opening weekend have us all wondering what the opening-weekend tally will be.
The Bag Man (2014) - [Limited]- Crime | Drama | Thriller
A criminal bides his time at a seedy motel, waiting for his boss after killing several men and making away with a mystery bag.
Director:David Grovic |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: First-time director David Grovic gets some serious on-screen support from John Cusack and Robert De Niro for his genre exercise. And we're always happy to see Crispin Glover, a model of eccentric behavior in Hollywood (take some notes, Shia) on the big or small screen.
The Lunchbox (2013) - [Limited]- Drama | Romance
A mistaken delivery in Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox.
Director:Ritesh Batra |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Something would be amiss if the union of superstar Irrfan Khan and renown stage actress Nimrat Kaur fails to engage art-house audiences of the next couple of months. Director Ritesh Batra's feature-film debut won an audience award at Cannes and yet somehow missed out on being India's nomination for this year's Foreign Language Oscar.
Stalingrad (2013) - [Limited]- Action | War
A band of Russian soldiers fight to hold a strategic building in their devastated city against a ruthless German army, and in the process become deeply connected to two Russian women who have been living there.
Director:Fedor Bondarchuk |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Russia's first-ever 3D production has been a huge success on its home turf, and we're wondering if part of the reason Columbia Pictures imported the movie for a special run in IMAX theaters is to road test director Fedor Bondarchuk's effects-heavy approach to filmmaking on American audiences. Bondarchuk already has the Inhabited Island franchise to his credit so it's not hard to imagine him being eyed for his first English-language project.
Repentance (2014) - [Limited]- Horror | Thriller
A successful author and spiritual advisor takes on a troubled man as a client, completely unaware that the man's fixation on his mother's death will soon put his life in jeopardy.
Director:Philippe Caland |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Forest Whitaker has made a film already with director Philippe Caland, the little-seen morality tale Ripple Effect, and here they've re-teamed for what's being promoted to general audiences as a Misery-like thriller since it appears the movie's Buddhist themes have been toned down in its marketing.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013) - [Re-release]- Comedy
With the 70s behind him, San Diego's top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy, returns to take New York's first 24-hour news channel by storm.
Director:Adam McKay |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Ron Burgundy and company did everything we expected in their second outing: they outperformed their first adventure, expanded their overseas audience, and set themselves up for a possible trilogy. This re-release is essentially a re-edited version retrofitted with an R rating and allegedly 800 new jokes.
