TV Ratings: 'Shark Tank,' 'Blue Bloods' lead Friday, while 'Hannibal' premieres low

22 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fast National ratings for Friday, February 28, 2014. After three weeks of NBC Olympics dominance, "Shark Tank" and "Blue Bloods"  put ABC and CBS back in their normal positions atop primetime in young viewers and overall.  In its first Friday airing, NBC's "Hannibal" outdrew its Thursday episodes from the summer, but its premiere numbers weren't appreciably different from recent "Dracula" performances in the same time period. Meanwhile, "Enlisted" failed to get any post-Olympics bump and an original did the same numbers as recent encore for Fox. Having a lead-in might have helped. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 1.7 rating for Friday night, beating the 1.4 rating for CBS in the key demographic. NBC's 1.2 key demo rating was enough for third, ahead of the 0.7 key demo rating for Fox and The CW's 0.3 key demo rating. Overall, though, CBS won easily with an estimated 9.97 million viewers and 6.2 rating/11 share for Friday night, »

Dean Winters Joins Battle Creek as First of Two Detectives

22 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Vince Gilligan’s much-anticipated new CBS drama, Battle Creek, just cast 30 Rock alum Dean Winters as its first lead. The one-time beeper king joins the show as Detective Russ Agnew, a “smart, tough, impatient and pragmatic guy who gets results but whom no one wants to partner with because he prefers to cut through any nonsense," The Hollywood Reporter reports. For those who think that sounds a bit like True Detective: know that Agnew's yet-to-be-cast partner is a naive, trusting FBI agent. We’d like to recommend one Miss Elizabeth “Dummy” Lemon for the role. »

Fred Armisen Debuts His New ‘Girls’ Theme (Video)

Only a week into their partnership, there’s trouble between Seth Meyers and Fred Armisen: The “Late Night” had to accuse his bandleader of fibbing. “I talk to you, and I feel like you’re just making things up,” Meyers said on Friday’s episode. “I feel like you’re not being honest with me and what happens is you brag to people about things that aren’t true backstage.” Also read: Ratings: Seth Meyers Ties Top ‘Late Night’ Wednesday in 5 Years Case in point: Armisen claimed that when Lena Dunham guested on the show Thursday, she agreed to »

'True Detective': A theoretical conversation about the show, starring Rust Cohle and Martin Hart

1 hour ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

After a mere six episodes, HBO’s True Detective has become the breakout TV sensation of 2014, with ratings ascending each week to match the snowballing buzz over the show’s mystery (whodunit?) and its various teasing references (Yellow King? Carcosa?). In turn, the last couple of weeks has seen the rise of an oppositional force — not quite a backlash, but rather, a series of counterarguments, focusing on the show’s female characters (nude, young, incapable of resisting the balding charms of middle-aged detectives) and the grander possibility that the show’s various philosophical musings amount to a whole lot of hot air. »

Oscar Arrivals: Can TV Hosts Please Ask About the Movies?

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

There are a lot of reasons to miss the late Roger Ebert, but one of them was the authority and genuine love of movies that he brought to the Oscar red carpet, when he appeared on the local arrivals show for the Los Angeles ABC station, Kabc-tv.

While there’s more time and coverage devoted to the arrivals than ever, both of those aforementioned commodities are in painfully short supply, as the coverage has shifted almost entirely to banality and fashion, where the most probing question one is apt to hear – over and over again – is “Who are you wearing?”

Granted, much of the audience that tunes in for the Oscars is preoccupied with how everyone looks, even if it’s unlikely they’ll ever go out and buy a Tiffany bracelet, much less one of those designer dresses or ornate pieces of jewelry on display.

Still, the Academy Awards »

Play our Oscar party games!

Will it be 12 Years a Slave or Gravity? Will people enjoy Ellen DeGeneres’ performance, or will we be wishing it was Anne Hathaway and James Franco again instead? Will Jonah Hill end the night as an Oscar winner? So many questions, and in just a few hours we’ll have the answers.

Right now, we may not know every crazy future meme that will happen during tonight’s ceremony (airing on ABC beginning at 7 p.m. Et), but we made some educated guesses about things that could go down during the DeGeneres-hosted telecast, including some sure things: Tears, rambling speeches, »

For Oscar Weekend, ‘SNL’ Riffs On The Movies

2 hours ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Saturday Night Live didn’t skewer the movies themselves. Instead last night’s show used them as jumping off points for wouldn’t-it-be-funny-if sketches. One imagines 12 Years A Slave auditioning white actors who were inappropriate for the roles. Another has a sour critic from an 1860s newspaper panning this year’s nominees and film classics. A third had cute kids from an acting camp playing Wolf Of Wall Street, Gravity, Captain Phillips, Her, and Dallas Buyers Club. The show also poked fun at Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres. Here you go: »

'SNL' recap: Jim Parsons tries to prove he's 'not that guy,' while new 'Update' anchor debuts -- Video

3 hours ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Now that the Olympics are over, NBC has finally returned to its normal programming, which means that Saturday Night Live is back…with a bazinga! Emmy winner Jim Parsons, best known for playing practical jokes on The Big Bang Theory, tried to trade away his nerdy persona to host the show for the first time with musical guest Beck returning for his seventh time on the SNL stage. The show’s return also marked the debut of new Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost, who replaces current Late Night host Seth Meyers.

Well, actually I guess NBC is still obsessed with winter sports, »

You may be busy plating your charcuterie or putting gold frosting on sugar cookies in preparation for a loaded Oscar bash, but don’t forget that there’s another major movie awards show going down in Hollywood this weekend.

On March 1, the winners of the 34th annual Razzie Awards were announced in a ceremony at IgnitedSpaces in Hollywood. Honoring the worst films of the year with a prestigious Golden Raspberry statue, the annual awards call out the year’s biggest stars to “Own Their Bad,” which occasionally happens when folks like Sandra Bullock actually show up at the ceremony to »

'Happy Face Killer': David Arquette's Lifetime movie will make you terrified of truckers

13 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Lifetime's latest original movie, the based-on-a-true-story "Happy Face Killer," was truly disturbing. You'll definitely get creepy chills every time you see David Arquette for the next few weeks.

Arquette played real-life serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, a Canadian truck driver who began strangling women as he crisscrossed the country, leaving a confession with a happy face at each crime scene. When a couple took responsibility for one of his murders, he started to get cocky and write letters to newspaper editors and messages on rest stop walls. That hubris ultimately got him arrested.

If you don't want to get caught having committed murder, you should probably not write letters and film videos confessing.

As far as Lifetime movies go, this one was pretty middle-of-the-road. No performances were outrageously campy -- though all low-budget thrillers on this network seem to have some level of cheesiness to them. Gloria Reuben was certainly »

The finale focused on the topic of patterns. Previous episodes have tackled games, money, space, trash, fantasy, the other side and the number one, bringing in celebrity guests and a number of talented artists from around the world for vignettes all centered on the episode's theme.

What did you think of the show? Was the finale a worthy conclusion to an interesting, experimental first season? What do you think the show should discuss in Season 2?

Reporter Miguel Almaguer gets stuck in mud, rescued by California firefighters

14 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

You've probably gathered from all the Twitter whining that Los Angeles (and the rest of Southern California) is being hit hard by a major rainstorm. Watch this NBC News report about the storm from reporter Miguel Almaguer -- it'll be even more effective when you know that Almaguer had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in the mud during his broadcast.

Almaguer waded out into four feet of mud to film a shot for the report about how the record amounts of rain could mean disastrous mudslides that have already closed roads. "Even when it rains I've never seen it this violent and gnarly," says a local.

Warns a fire department spokesperson, "As the mud is flowing, the fire department personnel cannot get to you."

Perhaps Almaguer should have followed that advice, as he got stuck shortly thereafter and was pulled out by two firefighters who were passing by. »

Comcast Nears $320 Million Deal to Acquire Video Ad Platform FreeWheel

14 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Comcast Corp. is closing in on a deal to acquire the video ad platform FreeWheel for around $320 million.

FreeWheel’s platform facilitates the cross-platform insertion of advertising in on-demand programming and live streaming feeds, making it easier for content companies and distributors to squeeze more advertising revenue from their content offerings over time. FreeWheel is known for its ability to offer highly targeted advertising insertion based on a range of user-specific factors that are attractive to advertisers.

Headquartered in Silicon Valley, FreeWheel has worked with a host of blue-chip clients since its formation in 2007 — including Amazon, Fox and NBCUniversal, Turner Broadcasting and At&T.

Owning FreeWheel would be a benefit to Comcast as it looks to expand its digital content offerings after it absorbs Time Warner Cable, as planned through the $45.2 billion merger agreement set last month.

If that deal is completed, Comcast will have the size and scale with »
