Transcoding company Telestream announced today that Vantage Transcode Multiscreen now offers HEVC transcoding powered by the x265 codec -- a first for a commercial product, the company notes. Benefits include double the compression of AVC/H.264, and the possibility of streaming higher frame rate video at lower bitrates. HEVC is widely seen as an essential for ultra HD video streaming.

The x265 codec was created by a global open source community. Telestream points out that it is a co-founder of the x265 project. HEVC encoding based on x265 builds on the robust x264 project codebase, says Paul Turner, Telestream's vice president of enterprise product management, adding that the open source community ensured that x265 is as robust and efficient as its predecessor.

A complete solution for transcoding, packaging, and workflow automation, Vantage Transcode Multiscreen includes both x265 and x264/H.264 encoding, says Telestream. The Vantage Transcode Multiscreen software runs on Telestream's Lightspeed Server. There will be no additional cost for HEVC encoding for current Vantage Transcode Multiscreen customers.

Those wanting a closer look at Telestream's HEVC encoding can attend BVE later this month in London, CabSat in Dubai and TV Connect in London in March, or NAB in Las Vegas, Nevada, in April.
