Project Summary

The portion of Samoa Boulevard within Arcata city limits was characterized by its industrial past; a lack of landscaping, unnecessarily wide motor vehicle travel lanes, inconsistent or nonexistent sidewalks, no bicycle facilities and general neglect were the corridor's predominant features.

The goals of the Samoa Gateway Improvement Project involve significantly enhancing pedestrian and bicycle facilities and, through landscaping and architectural treatments, creating a gateway theme and feel representative of Arcata.  The project scope involves replacing existing sidewalks and infilling new segments between existing stretches of sidewalk where there previously were no sidewalks.  The project also adds bicycle lanes and creates new landscaped areas on both sides of the street and within some of the existing medians.  Public art, architectural wayfinding signs and enhanced lighting will all be features of the project.
