A Good Day To Die Hard Star Jai Courtney Lands Kyle Reese Role in Terminator: Genesis

23 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The new Terminator film has found its Kyle Reese.  After testing a number of actors for the key role in director Alan Taylor’s (Thor: The Dark World) reboot Terminator: Genesis, we learned recently that Taylor and Paramount had narrowed their focus to two actors: Jai Courtney (Jack Reacher) and Boyd Holbrook  (The Host).  Now Variety reports that the former has come away with the role, as Courtney has been tapped to play Kyle Reese opposite Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) as John Connor, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the iconic Terminator.  Hit the jump for more.  Per Variety’s report, plot details on Terminator: Genesis are firmly under wraps save for the fact that it’s being planned as the first in a new trilogy of films.  Michael Biehn inhabited the Reese role in James Cameron’s original film, so Courtney certainly has big shoes to fill. »

The actor-rapper on his new film, Ride Along, the progress of the Nwa biopic and how the old righteous fury still burns brightly

Hi, Cube. What are you up to?

Ah man, just sitting here chilling with my wife, watching the Lakers game.

Nice. Did you do any police research for Ride Along?

Ha ha! Nah, I didn't have to do no research – I've been in the back of those cars, I know how it goes! And my character is undercover. The difference between an undercover cop and a crook is a badge.

When was the last time you were in the back of one of those cars?

In real life? '90.

What for?

It was a bad night. Let's leave it at that.

So what was it like working with Laurence Fishburne again? (1)

The best. I owe a lot to Larry just for the advice he gave me on Boyz n the Hood. »

Hollywood’s Greats Embrace Fresh Takes

36 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

What do directors Fritz Lang, Stanley Kramer, Preston Sturges, Stanley Kubrick, Sam Peckinpah, Alain Resnais, Ang Lee, Wim Wenders and Peter Watkins have in common?

They’re all filmmakers who made their reputations by taking the movies to new places, to worlds and ideas they hadn’t visited either by the helmers’ cinematic approaches or by embracing material that didn’t conform to the “commercial” film business of their times.

Despite their different nationalities, wildly disparate techniques and wide range of genres they worked in, they were all innovators.I think the Oscar race of 2013, a contest characterized by boldness and daring, might impress cinema’s great risk-takers.

Fritz Lang would be intrigued by “Gravity’s” mix of sci-fi and metaphysics. Stanley Kramer’s social conscience would be touched by “Philomena.” Road movie pioneer Wim Wenders could see a lineage to “Nebraska.” Preston Sturges would laugh and admire the inventive antics of “American Hustle. »

What Actors Can Learn from Marlon Brando, Ellen Page and James Franco (Video)

38 minutes ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

James Franco is no fool. He has made a study of how to survive in Hollywood as he pursues multiple careers--without worrying about how he will be judged. Whether it will be fulfilling or not is up to him. He gets that the relationship between him and his audience is complicated. And that the only way to combat all the sycophancy and craziness from agents, managers, lawyers, producers, publicists, filmmakers, executives and the media is to try to be himself, for better or worse, and not get hung up on everyone else's expectations and desires. 27-year-old Shia Labeouf's recent behavior--and the media response-- has prompted Franco to try and explain what he thinks is happening, in the Nyt.  Marlon Brando was one Hollywood movie star who struggled to remain authentic under the most trying circumstances, hating obsequious questions from the press, whether in English or French. 'The Simpsons' Get Lego Episode, David Michod To Direct Ballet Drama Pilot 'Flesh And Bone' & More

53 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With "The Rover," his follow-up to the highly lauded “Animal Kingdom” set for release this summer, David Michôd has free time on his schedule and decided to head to the small screen. Per Deadline, Michôd will helm the pilot episode for the Starz series “Flesh And Bone” from “Breaking Bad” staff writer Moira Walley-Beckett. The series follows “a young ballet dancer, Claire, who has a distinctly troubled past, as she joins a prestigious ballet company in New York.” Sounds like "Black Swan: The Series." Michôd previously helmed an episode of the now-cancelled Mike White HBO comedy “Enlightened.” We write a piece on “The Lego Movie” and whether its success should be celebrated or feared, and just like that, the blocky stop-motion-esque aesthetic of that movie is being brought to the small screen. EW reports “The Simpsons” is all set to “air an all-Lego episode” that sees “Homer finding himself in a world where Marge, »

Watch: Amy Adams' Tearful Tribute To Philip Seymour Hoffman On ‘Inside the Actors Studio’

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We're coming up on three weeks since we learned about the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the loss of his tremendous talent still stings cinephiles the world over. But of course, the weight of his loss is more deeply felt to those who were close to him, and there were few actors who were lucky enough to work him on the level that Amy Adams did. She starred in three films with Hoffman—"Charlie Wilson's War," "Doubt" and "The Master"—and was slated to feature in his next directorial effort "Ezekiel Moss" before he passed away. And clearly, that time with him was special. Earlier this month—three days after this death—Adams dropped by "Inside The Actor's Studio" to record an episode with James Lipton. Naturally, any discussion of her work involves her films with Hoffman, and Adams paid a lovely, tearful tribute to her friend. "He was beautiful, »

Jim Jarmusch: 'Women are my leaders'

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

His new film, Only Lovers Left Alive, is a great romance between two vampires unanswerable to time. But Jarmusch doesn't want to live for ever – unless it's with Tilda Swinton or Patti Smith

'I've seen my dog dreaming," says Jim Jarmusch over lunch in New York on a snowy December day. His voice is sedate, but excitement pops in his eyes. Other animals have imaginations, too, he thinks. "Once I left a mop outside the window of my apartment, and I saw a sparrow examining it for several days. It kept coming back, and then it started biting through to take away some strands to build a nest. It was thinking, you know?" Jarmusch does a sparrow voice, which sounds identical to his usual voice: "Man, I think this might work …"

Speaking to Jim Jarmusch, it turns out, isn't so different from watching one of his films. His work, like his conversation, »

Nymphomaniac (Volumes 1 and 2)

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

An appealing odd-couple relationship is at the heart of this heartfelt study of sex addiction with few of the director's usual provocations

To recap: Lars von Trier makes an explicit film called Nymphomaniac; he orchestrates some traditional tongue-in-cheek Trier publicity about "hardcore" and "softcore" versions; he even induces excitable critics in Denmark and elsewhere to pull a gallery of orgasm faces in homage to the naughty poster campaign – like a Victorian medical textbook about congenital idiocy. Yet his new film is his most inoffensive, which is to say its offensiveness is deliberate; it's the first Von Trier film that is not a tiresome practical joke on the audience. It is about the most tender, platonic relationship imaginable: a depressed and exhausted woman and an elderly, vulnerable man, played superbly by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgård.

Skarsgård is Seligman, a lonely old bachelor who discovers Joe (Gainsbourg) lying bruised, bleeding and semi-conscious near his apartment building. »

Heroines of Cinema: 10 Trans Actors Who Could Have Played Jared Leto's Role in 'Dallas Buyers Club'

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

I was going to start this article by saying that I don't want to take anything away from Jared Leto's performance in "Dallas Buyers Club". But in a sense, I do. The performance certainly holds up as a piece of art, but as a part of our culture, I believe it needs contextualizing. I am not the first person to suggest this. Chelsea Hawkins wrote in PolicyMic that "Dallas Buyers Club" fails trans actors while Paris Lees in the Independent was perhaps more equivocal but still asked "Why can't we cast trans people in trans roles?". Of course, nobody wants to limit trans actors to trans roles, but in the context of the status quo and general acceptability of handing the role to an actor such as Leto, it would be an undeniably liberating move. But wait, you say - Leto was playing a pre-op trans woman. Surely it »

After last year's release of The Lords of Salem - a polarizing piece of art, to say the least - Rob Zombie announced that he'd be making his first film outside of the horror genre. In an interview conducted over on New Zealand's 3 News, Zombie opened up about his future as a filmmaker, starting it off by saying that he's not sure if he's as big of a horror fan as he used to be, but nevertheless seguing into a discussion about how the pre-production stage of Broad Street Bullies turned into the planning stage for yet another horror film.
