10 LEGO Sets We Want

65 years and counting, LEGO is as popular as ever.

With the positive reception of The LEGO Movie, the continuing LEGO video game franchise, and fan-favorite franchises like Back to the Future, The Simpsons, and Ghostbusters finally getting LEGO-ized, it seems like 2014 is indeed the year of the LEGO.

65 years after their introduction, the building block toy that celebrates the infinite imagination of kids and adults alike are proving to be more popular than ever. With more and more fan fantasies coming to fruition as LEGO sets, we thought it’d be fun to take a look at some properties that we’d absolutely love to see on the shelves.

Mario

Probably the biggest no-brainer on our wish list, the Mushroom Kingdom is an obvious choice for a LEGO set. The world of the video games – particularly the original 8-bit incarnations – basically look like it was built by LEGOs anyway.

We envision a bunch of little figures of Mario’s supporting cast – Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, maybe even Wario and Waluigi – in addition to all sorts of fun shapes. Warp pipes, question blocks, goombas, the sky is the limit. Heck, even a Peach’s Castle play set. Plus, it’d only be a matter of time before some talented kid recreated Super Mario Bros.’ World 1-1 in stop motion using these potential Mario LEGOs.

Legend of Zelda

We’ve already got Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in LEGO form, so we think it’s high time that the most celebrated fantasy epic in the world of video games gets its due. Link’s land of Hyrule holds a lot of potential for fun LEGO sets, from various dungeon designs to exotic creatures, let alone Zelda’s castle itself. Or if they’re game-specific sets, that means we could get the King of Red Lions from Wind Waker, the crashing moon of Termina from Majora’s Mask, and near infinite versions of Ganon/Ganondorf.

The variety of environments in the world of Zelda makes the possibilities endless. And who doesn’t want an adorable LEGO version of Epona? The rub here: Zelda already went through LEGO's CUUSOO process, where folks can propose a set (and have LEGO Review Board vote on it). Alas, the LRB did not approve it, putting a crimp and any Hyrule brick plans. But we can dream!

Sonic the Hedgehog

Just like Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog is a game that is just begging to be LEGO-ized. The wide variety of environments from throughout the platformer’s decades-long history could be utilized for a variety of creative sets. Not to mention the wide cast of characters from both the games and the comics – or how about a gigantic play set of Dr. Eggman’s (Robotnik if you’re nasty) floaty egg machine thing?

We’d even be cool with area-specific sets – a Green Hill Zone set, a Casino Night Zone set, Marble Garden Zone set, and so on. And of course, the real magic would be mixing and matching them all.

Mega Man

Mega Man could be one of the coolest LEGO properties of all time. Not only could LEGO deliver play sets based on the bazillions of themed levels that have spanned the games over the years, but they could offer the Robot Masters as sets in and of themselves. Spark Man, Needle Man, Metal Man, Flash Man, Bomb Man, and oh so many more could all be their own LEGO structure.

Environments like Dr. Wily and/or Dr. Light’s laboratories would also make for some cool sets as well, which could come included with little LEGO versions of the characters including Rock, Roll, Bass, Dr. Wily, Dr. Light, Proto Man, and, of course, Rush. Just think about LEGO Rush and LEGO Epona hanging out. We thought so.

Nightmare Before Christmas

It seems that ever since the early 2000s – ten years after its original release -- Nightmare Before Christmas has become a piece of pop culture that will never fade away. Loved by adults, kids, and goths alike, the world of Halloween Town could make for one of the most unique LEGO sets of all time. The designs of Tim Burton aren’t typically known for their symmetry or their, well, normalcy, so it’d be quite a thrill to see how LEGO could adapt those kinds of structures into a play set.

And let’s be honest – a glow-in-the-dark Oogie Boogie torture dungeon play set would be ridiculously awesome.

Mickey Mouse and Company

The most recognizable cartoon character of all time, Mickey and his pals are long overdue for a LEGO set (that isn't DUPLO). It seems like a good place to start would be with a Steamboat Willie set, complete with mini-figures of Mickey, Minnie, and Pete. And how cool would it be to have an adult-collector focused black-and-white variant edition? Yes, please.

Steamboat-willie

Of course, the possibilities are endless for Mickey’s best pals – Goofy, Donald, Pluto, and so on – considering the long, deep history the characters have in animation. It seems like one of the most untapped properties that LEGO could make a whole lot of dough with.

Family Guy

Remember when FOX canceled Family Guy way back when? It’s amazing that not only did the show make a comeback, but it became more popular than anyone ever expected. With the Griffins’ network neighbors The Simpsons getting their own LEGO set, it only makes sense that Quahog’s first family gets their due in construction block form.

The Griffin household is an obvious place to start, of course, but LEGO could also give us some of Quahog’s other famous locales: The Drunken Clam, James Woods High School, and the Pawtucket Brewery.

Godzilla

If you were a relatively normal kid, it’s likely that one of your favorite past times was building an epic city of LEGOs, perfecting it as best you could… and then utterly destroying it (or maybe you just destroyed your sibling’s carefully constructed town… in which case, you’re kind of a jerk). But wouldn’t it be cool to destroy those mega cities with the ultimate destroyer of cities: Godzilla?

A Godzilla line of LEGOs could include not only the King of the Monsters, but all is pals too – Mothra, Mecha-Godzilla, Rodan, and the rest.

Star Trek

Hasbro’s line of KRE-O construction blocks tried to deliver some adventures in the final frontier with sets based on J.J. Abrams’ reboot movies, but the world of Star Trek is so much bigger than two films, and only LEGO could deliver that kind of scale.

From The Original Series to Next Generation to Abrams, a LEGO play sets of the Enterprise and famous locations from Star Trek’s multi-decade history could be one of the hottest items they ever produce.

Toy Story

Just like the idea behind LEGO, one of the themes of Pixar’s Toy Story movies is the power of imagination. So why not combine the two? Toy Story is unique in that it presents the possibility of not only LEGO sets based on the Pixar films themselves, but also sets that represent the fictional toy lines from within the world.

For example, you could have Andy’s Room and Pizza Planet play sets, but also Woody’s Round-Up and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command sets, including all of the peripheral characters and designs that come with the territory. Sounds like a match made in toy heaven to us.

Editor's Note: As many of you have rightly pointed out, this has already been made... We didn't remember when putting the list together. Thanks for telling us. (Also... yay!)
