FAQs: The i iPad app

If I subscribe, do the issues download automatically?

Issue downloads are fulfilled automatically once you click to download.

How do I subscribe?

Click the subscriptions button and choose which subscription you would like. A recurring subscription will charge you at the end of each subscription period until you cancel it, during your subscription period all released issues will be available to you to download.

What is the cost of the app?

The i app is available for the following recurrent payment periods:

7 days (6 issues) @  £1.49

1 month  (25 issues) @  £4.99

3 months (75 issues) @ £12.99

12 months (312 issues) @  £44.99

Can I set up a direct debit?

Apple’s new recurring payment system means that once you have paid once for your subscription the payment will automatically be debited from your iTunes account at the start of each payment period. On Android devices you will need to renew your subscription manually via the app.

How long does a download take?

When you open the app each day it will update with new content; you can then download that day's issue. 56 pages over broadband wi-fi will take under a minute.

How do I zoom in to an article?

You can zoom in on the page by double tapping to snap to a set zoom level, or pinching and spreading for manual adjustments.

How do I get back to the homepage?

You can click the home icon on the bottom right at any time to return to the homepage.

Can I search by subject?

You can jump to the various sections through the 'contents' button, found on the bottom toolbar.

Can I view double-page spreads in one screen?

Yes - turn your iPad to 'landscape mode'.

Will I be notified when my subscription is coming to an end?

As you get near the end of your subscription period Apple will send you an email reminding you that it is renewing (or stopping if applicable). On Android you will have a visible display of how many issues are remaining in your subscription, once it ends the purchase options will re-appear.

What time is each day's update normally available? And on what days?

Our updates will go live around midnight the night before the edition (so Monday’s edition will be live at midnight on Sunday).

Can I go back over previous days if I missed a download? How far?

On Apple you will need to purchase a ‘back issue bundle’ from the Subscriptions section, and then use these credits on back issues. On Android you can use your subscription credits to purchase any issues which you like.

How long will my downloads be stored on my iPad?

Downloads will be stored until you delete them by going into ‘my library’ and clicking the red cross by an issue.

Who do I contact if I'm still having problems?

You can email help@pocketmags.com for technical assistance.

Can I use the app when my iPad is not connected to the internet?

Yes, all your issues are stored locally in your iPad. To delete an issue, click the red cross by that issue on the ‘library’ page on the homescreen.

What should I do if the app crashes or a downloaded edition fails to launch?

Try one of two things; first deleting the issue from the 'My library' section, which is available via a button at the top of the app's home screen, and then redownloading the issue. If that doesn't work, a hard reset of your iPad should solve the problem. If the problem persists, please contact help@pocketmags.com .

How do I cancel my subscription or claim a refund?

Apple subscriptions are managed through Apple and cannot be refunded once started. The recurrence can however be stopped by scrolling to the bottom of the app store, clicking on your Apple ID (bottom left), clicking Manage subscriptions, clicking on ‘The i’ and turning Auto Renewal off. This can also be done via iTunes on your home computer.

I'm getting a connection error when I try to set up a new account what can I do?

In this case the best thing to do is sign up here and then login to the app using these account details.

I've made a purchase but the issue/subscription hasn't appeared in my account.

If you haven't already, please register an account by clicking login/register in the top right corner of the app homepage and then contact i@independent.co.uk stating your username and the problem.

My app won't load past the splash page, how can I fix this?

Please first leave the app open for enough time for a response, either a crash or the app opening. If it repeatedly crashes simply delete the app (by holding your finger on the app logo until it wobbles and then clicking the cross) and then redownload it from the App Store.

I've downloaded an issue but it won't load or has wrong or missing pages. What do I do?

Please delete the issue and redownload it - to do this click 'My Library' on the iPad and click the red cross next to the issue in question, on the iPhoneclick on the issue name and then select delete from the sub menu. If this doesn't resolve the problem please contact i@independent.co.uk with details of the problem.

I am unable to download today's issue even though I have a subscription. How can I fix this?

If you haven't already, please register an account by clicking login/register in the top right corner of the app homepage and then contact i@independent.co.uk stating your username and the exact problem, i.e. there is no download button, or when I press download nothing happens.

I'm not in the UK; can I still download the app?

Yes, distribution of the app is global. So enjoy i whenever and wherever you are.

i is everywhere.

As of 29/11/11,  i  has been downloaded in nearly 60 countries.
