Other oft-rumored candidates for Phase 3 introduction include Black Panther and another Hulk movie (Planet Hulk?). Our insiders tell us Black Panther isn’t in the cards for a solo introduction (could come in a team-up though) but other rumors point towards The Avengers 2 possibly setting up another Hulk outing for star Mark Ruffalo. Let’s look at how Phase 3 could play out:
- July 2015 – Ant-Man
- May 2016 - Guardians of the Galaxy 2
- July 2016 - Doctor Strange
- May 2017 - Thor 3 or Captain America 3
- Second 2017 date - The Inhumans or Black Panther or Hulk
If Guardians and Doctor Strange are 2016 releases by Marvel – and it’s a big if at this point – the studio would be banking on their newest characters for a year and a half, and not to mention, properties based primarily in space or on magic. If that roadmap is accurate, does it make sense for another trip to Asgard to come in before The Avengers 3 or will another (more grounded) Captain America adventure be what the franchise needs? Is there room for both before The Avengers 3 (i.e if Avengers 3 takes the second date in 2018)?
We’re getting several levels deep into speculation based on a rumor, so let’s pull it back and talk about what a second Guardians entry so soon means for the series. If Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are back so soon, that would confirm what we’ve all been saying – that the Guardians are helping setup a big confrontation at the end of Phase 3 where they might team with Earth’s Mightiest heroes in a confrontation with Thanos in The Avengers 3. If The Avengers 3 is about Thanos (and if they’re not saving him for The Avengers 4), then that would lend more credence to the possibility of Doctor Strange and The Inhumans being crucial to Phase 3 since they can be used to introduce more Infinity Stones/Gems that Thanos will need to put together the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet.
And if Captain America 3 – which directors Anthony and Joe Russo are already in talks for – happens to come after The Avengers 3, perhaps we’ll see The Winter Soldier wield his shield (for the right reasons this time) and take on the mantle… For now, we look forward to the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer debuting in the near future.
How do you want to see Phase 3 of the MCU play out and what stories should The Avengers 3 and The Avengers 4 cover? Let us know in the comments!
Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn off of his script co-written by Nicole Perlman. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Glenn Close.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel to GOTG soon. Its the movie I’m looking forward to the most. The whole franchise is really on the brink of being something much bigger. 3-4 years ago…nothing. And now..the GOTG comic is written by bendis and is always the top seller or thereabouts. Their story is amazingly interesting and soo full of potential.
This could really be great.
Not to mention that the current guardians debuted 6 years ago. They are around the same age as the mcu
Nah, Cap 2 will be ‘great’ (hopefully the Academy won’t discriminate against a CBM when awards time rolls around) but GOTG has a talking Raccoon and Disney’s marketing machine behind it. Its a virtual lock to become a blockbuster hit(same with ant-man, it has ants) GOTG will easily surpass 800 mil worldwide.
You Marvelites are so silly.
I love their movies for the most part too, but you are advocating an Academy Award for a movie you haven’t even seen. That is just F’n silly!
I saw the trailer, and yes it was only a sample, but the Cinematography, Production design, Visual effects all looked top notch to me.
Don’t listen to DragonArcher. There have been quite a few CBM’s that have been nominated for Academy Awards in the past. In fact, IM3 is up for one at this years Awards Ceremony! Interestingly enough…I’m not sure that Man of Steel is up for an award….Hmmmm…
I know, this guy has not heard of awards for Special effects (Visual effects, sound effects), Film editing, Costume awards.
Um… yes I have.
But I STILL WAIT UNTIL I SEE A MOVIE before I talk about what awards it should win.
I don’t go into movies already assuming it is of the level that deserves an academy award because of a two minute clip that may show the only good parts.
Dude, I don’t think there is anything wrong with a comic book movie winning an Oscar. NEVER said I did.
What I said was, advocating an Academy Award for a movie you have never seen is six levels of fanboy silly.
Then to justify this silliness with what you saw in a trailer is 16 levels of fanboy silly.
Don’t get me twisted, could be (should be) a great flick, but to start talking about what Oscars it could/should/might win before it is released is just ridiculous.
What does Man of Steel have to do with a conversation about over eager fanboys ready to proclaim the second coming of “Star Wars: A New Hope.”
OH.. your one of those silly f***ers who thinks everything has to be Marvel OR DC.
Sorry, I like em both. Only thing I hate about Marvel is their boyband fans.
I simply stated that I believe CAP2 will be a great movie and that I hope the Academy does not discriminate against it solely on the basis of CAP2 being a comic book movie. I did not ‘proclaim’ it as an Oscar front runner either, I said based trailer the visual effects look top notch, I felt the same way when I saw the trailer for Gravity last year.
As for MOS, the climatic fight scene it looked cheesy, (looks like it was shot in the same warehouse as 300 and Sucker Punch) just by looking at the CAP2 trailer I can see that the Cinematography on CAP2 is a much higher quality. (look at the scene where the Hellcarrier crashes into the building and compare that to the the destruction of Metropolis in MOS. There is no comparison, judging by the sample provided in the CAP2 trailer, the visual effects appear to be far superior to any CMB I have seen.
Now, I’m not comparing CAP2 to the Battle of Hoth special effects wise but from what I have seen in previews CAP2 cinematography looks to be at the top of this years class.
“I simply stated that I believe CAP2 will be a great movie and that I hope the Academy does not discriminate against it solely on the basis of CAP2 being a comic book movie.”
Ok. Fair enough point. Only thing you may have wanted to add was that first you hope it will be worth even wondering if it will be discriminated against. 2 minutes of good footage is not enough to start wondering what the Academy will think of it.
“As for MOS…”
Again… why are we bringing up Man of Steel? I happen to like the surrealistic style Snyder uses, but as I said, I still don’t get what that has to do with THIS conversation. I sure didn’t bring it up.
“Now, I’m not comparing CAP2 to the Battle of Hoth special effects wise but from what I have seen in previews CAP2 cinematography looks to be at the top of this years class.”
Top of the class for what? You have seen all the other movies already?
You have made your prediction, here is mine:
The Russo brothers have never made an impressive movie in their life, I will look to past performance before a 2 minute trailer that, like I said, may have every good shot they made already in it.
You want to see the best cinematography for 2014? A much better guess would be the directorial debut of cinematography Oscar Winner Wally Pfister or the always (well almost always, Im lookin at you TDKR) visually stunning Chris Nolan. Then again, it’s just a guess, I’m not going to start worrying if the Academy is going to snub them until I see the final product. Which was always my point.
Just my 2 cents.
I think Cap2 could be a great CBM and the special effects seem to be impressive, perhaps some of the best effects and editing of 2014.
@DragonArcher…Not trying to start a war…but just clarifying…
Were you replying to me bringing up MOS in my comment above?
If so, I will explain. I admittedly was making a slight playful jab at ya. I was just having fun. However, I only did so cause you made a slight playful jab too saying, “You Marvelites are so silly.” with your reply above. IMO, what Becton said in his first post didn’t make him look like a Marvelite (in its derogatory sense). He’s just excited and hopeful for the movie. Plus, people who generally use the term “marvelite” (from what I usually witness) are pretty biased in support of DC. Using the term made you come across that way.
Plus saying the following, “Only thing I hate about Marvel is their boyband fans.” makes you seem biased against Marvel again and a little more DC leaning.
If you claim to be neutral then it would have been unbiased of you if you had said, “Only thing I hate about Marvel and DC is their boyband fans.” Lets be honest, both “camps” have extremes. Stating Marvel fans as the guilty party only is what makes you look biased.
Lastly, “OH.. your one of those silly f***ers who thinks everything has to be Marvel OR DC. Sorry, I like em both.” Claiming to like both and then attacking a Marvel fan for being excited is another way you seem biased.
Im just trying to clear the waters…Not trying to bloody or muddy them. Either way, I agree that it is too early to judge merits of Cap 2 and its worthiness of the Oscar. But, hey, let the fan be excited. He did it without attacking MOS or DC. Why attack him for being stoked?
“Don’t listen to DragonArcher” about what exactly? He said it’s silly to judge a movie to that extent before you’ve actually watched it. It’s a sentiment I agree with 100%.
He didn’t say it wouldn’t be Academy Award worthy.
Whoa !! May 2016 GotG 2 will go head to head with DC’s BvS.
GotG 2 better bring out the big guns : Kree, Thanos,Nova Corps, Inhumans, Skrulls. If they ever wanna compete with BvS.
July 2016 we’ll get Doctor Strange movie. But who will play Stephen Strange ? Johnny Depp is still uncorfirmed.
Depp has Pirates 6 & Alice 2 in 2016. No room for the good Doctor that year if Depp’s involved – which it sounds like he’s not.
Thanks for the update Rob.
My theory for Marvel Phase 3:
I don’t care, going to see every movie regardless, just bring it on!
Why does this damn calendar move so SLOW!!
Marvel should just move out of that date or Batman vs Superman. Marvel would have something strong to take down Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman/Lex Luthor. I can’t imagine them pinning a risky sequel to movie no one heard of.
I agree.
But i would not underestimate how many people buy into GOTG as a franchise once its released. If that movie is half as good as people think it might be, then I think it’ll become a strong backbone in future phases of the MCU.
Anyone else catch Pratt on jimmy Fallon tonight? Not a single mention of gotg but they did talk about Jurassic world. Must not be allowed to talk about it.
He did look pretty trim btw
I think Avengers 3 will be may 2018 and GoTG will be their second release of 2018.. b/c of Thanos. They said the next two years will be an established property and then a new character each year. There was nothing stated for 2018, and it makes sense b/c of the Thanos tie. No way they will have a Guardians sequel a year and a half later give or take a month. Then Adam Warlock and Iron man/Ant-man in 2019.
Hmmm.
If Marvel is sticking with their 2016 date and going head to head with BvS, they need to throw Hulk at it.
Thor 2, while a fun movie, didn’t really give me any confidence that the series might try to get serious enough to hang with the elite CBMs. “Elite” in this case referring to gross. Thor 1 and 2 were really good, fun, fluff movies. That franchise just was never given the opportunity to be really epic and serious.
Cap 1 was the least successful Phase 1 film, and even if TWO turns out to as great as it’s getting hyped, the character just might not be enough of a draw to break big numbers.
Hulk, the Ruffalo version, was a lot of people’s fav part of Avengers. Hulk and Ruffalo both deserve a solo flick.
So, I’m think phase 3 will look something like:
Fall 15 – Ant-Man
Summer 16 – Hulk (2?)
Fall 16 – Doc Strange (or Ms. Marvel depending on casting. If Marvel wants Depp for Strange and Depp wants to do it, why not wait till his schedule is open. Put him in a stinger to hype him up and let it stew)
Spring/Summer 17 – Thor 3
Summer/Fall 17 – Black Panther (or Inhumans depending on how well Cosmic marvel plays out in GotG).
Spring/Summer 18 -Avengers 3
Avengers 3 leads into Hulk 3 (Planet Hulk).
Then you got Cap 3, Ant-Man 2, GotG 2, the two new properties (however Ms. Marvel/InHumans/Doc Strange/Black Panther land within Phase 3) which will all lead up to World War Hulk (which will replace/serve as Avengers 4)
With how vocal fans are about wanting more female and minority heros on screen, I’m surprised that Marvel is so dead set on pushing Doc Strange. I’m all for a Doc Strange flick, but does the MCU really need another rich white guy right now?
Or Marvel could throw a total curveball at everyone and put out a really bad ass Hawkeye solo flick.
So, to actually adress the article…
GotG would have to be a mind blowing home run at the box office to rush the sequel into production for Early 2016.
Pratt’s schedule alone (I’d imagine) Is gonna be tough to work around. Diesel’s is, as it has been noted, stacked (and he might be involved in a different Marvel project coming up). Batista just jumped back into wrestling. Cooper is one of the most sought after actors working currently and Saldana has the Avatar sequels coming up (if those aren’t already prepping) and probably Star Trek 3 not too far away. So, unless the actors (not to mention getting a script ready and a crew locked down) all magically have the time to put something together in 2015, (also not including the ridiculous Post production) GotG 2 probably won’t happen for a hot minute.
Im assuming that’s why the animated series is being pushed. Disney/Marvel is clearly banking on GotG being a massive hit and know that a sequel will need a lot of time to happen.
They can’t possibly make Thor 3 last till 2017, people will have lost the will to see it by then. Three year gap, is one thing. four years is too long for a film on a big cliff hanger. Loki and Thor’s fanbase will have grown-up and well and truly moved on to cooler things. And why commission the script writing for Thor 3 now? if you are only going to start filming in 2016?
Plus, that huge Thor 2 Asgardian set is in storage in London somewhere no doubt costing storage money. It makes sense to film Thor 3 during 2015 for a 2016 release date.
And finally, Anthony Hopkins isn’t getting any younger.
TDK and TDKR was a four year gap, and TDKR still got good box office.
I’m really hoping for a Black Panther solo movie. I think it’s past time for a righteous black super hero, and not one that’s white in the comics that mysteriously changes race
If anybody can take down Batman and Superman, it’s Rocket Raccoon.
I’m just as psyched for this movie as the next guy. But the thing I’m not getting is this: if GOTG is set in 2045 and Thanos is pretty much confirmed to make an appearance what does that tell us about the current timeline?
Let’s say he shows up by Avengers 3. Wouldn’t that mean that it is somewhat “written in stone” that the team won’t be able to defeat him? I’m ruling out the possibility of geezer Avengers taking on the mad titan in the not-so-near future. So the only other way of accomplishing that goal would be to transport either the Avengers into 2050ish or have the Guardians travel back in time to assist them. But wouldn’t that make a sequel to that brand superfluous?
As you can see, I’m quite confused as to how the creative minds behind the MCU are trying to believably tie everything together. Maybe someone else on here sees things more clearly and could point out where I went wrong …
Since its 2 movies a year by MARVEL and Ant-Man is the 2nd movie for 2015 you can be the 2 movies for 2016 will be Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in May and Doctor Strange in July. If MARVEL is serious on the guardians returning for a sequel then those will be the 2016 movies and Thor 3 is rumored to be the May 5th release date. Another rumor is MARVEL may be planning for a Incredible Hulk sequel or reboot for 2017 so those 2 movies just might fill up 2017 with more rumors that The Black Widow will be a stand alone film in 2018 followed by Captain America 3 the same year. The Avengers 3 movie coming May 3rd 2019 with Thanos as the bad guy and still no word on The Avengers 4. The Inhumans and Runaways still have not been greenlit and neither has Black Panther. Maybe will will here something new soon about MARVELS phase 3 movies after comic con 2014.
