Manatee Death Toll Highest Ever Recorded
Jan. 22, 2014—In Crystal Rivers, Florida, residents depend on a healthy manatee population for the local economy. But with the largest number of manatee deaths in recorded history, 2013 was a dire year, with more than 800 deaths for these friendly giants.
Hm you dont think the mass amount of boat activity ~causing gas and oil in the water more polluted? O.o i mean im not that person but if what they say in a confine area like that even if its a spring or river the amount collected on the rocks where they eat off of or the bit collected on the sea grass they eat O.o its pretty clear to me
I love manatee's and I would love to spend my vacation learning more about manatee's. I can't wait to swim with them.

too much pollution could be the culprit
:(
This is a tragedy! These beautiful and graceful creatures are "Gentle Giants". Their habitats in Florida are fresh to brackish water, in and around estuaries, and in rivers which contain one of their favorite foods, the Water Lily. These very habitats have been encroached upon by man for far too long... There are inumberable counts of boaters speed through rivers and other waterways maming, and killing off the Manatee population.
Historical facts as well as Captain's Shipping logs, make mention of the Manatees far back in of Florida's history, when it was thought that the Manatee, was mysterious, and elusive, Mermaid...
Years of conservation efforts are being carried out by Manatee Lovers, but public education, is sorely lacking, as the Manatee continues it's downward spiral, in numbers...
If you Love the Manatee, there are several things you might be ready to take action upon:
Organize, Write to your local legislators, your state legislators, write President O Bama, become involved with your most fond Manatee Aid Organization, go to the sights where Manatee live, and get involved...
As each of us take an inactive part, many wild plants and animals come nearer to extinction. With the loss of habitat, they have no alternatives than to do what they can to stay alive... The human species, is a detriment to the Earth, and all the beauty, she offers...
If we fail to heed these warnings, we come devistatingly close to our own extinction.
Food chains do not lie.
Each and every year my family holds reunions in Florida, usually July to August. Last year they chose Plantation Resort, in Crystal River, Florida...
By popular demand, it will be held there this year (2014) as well...
This gives me an opportunity of a lifetime... To get up close and personal with Manatees.
Why not consider this for your vacation plans... In my opinion, Disney World, dulls by comparison...
(pardon the changing font, undergoing computer difficulties...
I thank you for your time, and consideration...
Sincerely & Respectfully,

This breaks my heart knowing that 800 manatee's have died in a span of year with the number still climbing in 2014.
Oil spill have anything to do with these deaths and the deaths of so many dolphins this year?
I need help in finding videos for 4 birds for class project PowerPoint weblinks and youtube links for: Toucan, Flamingo, Heron, and Hummingbird, 1st grade level. The lesson plan is for students to learn about the birds habitats.
If anyone have these information of linkage let me know ASAP. Thank you

@Jenny B.
I'm with you . Good thinking. But unfortunately, if there is money to be made, people just say " hang the consequences", and plow ahead.
thank you
Anyone there thought about taking your MOTOR boats out of the territory you are giving manatee tours on? If you care about them, why would you disrupt their waning lives with noise and risk of hurting them?? Think about it?
I forgot to add to keep the ppl comming but use like a rope lever system or row boats that would BOOM problem solved
? LOL
@LeAnne Hatfield Cornell's web sight allaboutbirds has all you need. Yale has a great video about hummers using their tails to make noise. you-tube has some amusing videos about hummingbirds sleeping.
It sounds like your needs are pretty specific-but if you have time an egg dissection is very interesting to this age group. So is reassembling a chicken skeleton-but you have to do most of it yourself because it involves hot glue. Instructions on Geekdad.
Finally IF you /they are interested, the Great Backyard Bird Count is gearing up. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Mindy
@LeAnne Hatfield Hi Again! Toucan's are native to South American, they live in the Amazon Rain Forrest. Flamingos are found in coastal regions, there are a small population of them in the Florida Everglades, near Flamingo Lodge. Larger populations are found in the Patanau area of Brazil (South America). Flamingos feed mostly on crustaceans like shrimp, crabs, etc. Blue Heron, I believe have a larger habitat, and can be found in nature here in vermont, Florida, and perhaps in south america. Humming Bird habitats are also pretty far reaching, can also be found in many parts of North America, Vermont, and Florida included, as well as the lower parts of South America like the country of Uruguay, which is an Indian word meaning "Painted Bird"...There are hundreds if not thousands of varieties of Humming Birds, You'll want to note, the speed at which their wings flap... It's amazing... You can even buy a hummingbird feeder, and make your own sugar water which is like the nectar they eat from flowering plants...
Some other good sources of info are: The National Audobon Society, The Animal Planet, (perhaps) The National Wildlife Fund, and the U.S. Fish & Game Department.
There are many organizations which aid wildlife, try doing a web search under conservation, or Wildlife Charitable Organizations...
Hope this helps you with your research project...
Tina
@LeAnne Hatfield Love Manatees. Spent 26 years living in Miami... Much time in the "Florida Everglades"... This is a tragedy that must be stopped... I'm "Onboard', keep me informed, as sometimes it's tough to get the latest info here in Burlington, Vermont...
I'll be in Florida hopefully for a month or so in July, this year...
Thank-u, Tina
@Irene Hirschman
