Community groups are reminded that applications for the Infrastructure Safety and Security Grants are closing soon.
Groups are encouraged to contact JACS this week, if they are interested in submitting an application.
Community groups in Canberra can apply for $300,000 in grants from the ACT Government for security upgrades to their buildings and the purchase of new security equipment.
Having seen some great results in reducing property crime with burglary (down 25%) and motor vehicle theft (down 27%) as reported in the March 2012, ACT Criminal Justice Statistical Profile, community groups will be able to apply for a one-off grant of up to $10,000 to help ensure their property and possessions stay safe.
Some of the simplest upgrades to security features on buildings can make a big difference and that is why the government has decided to undertake another round of grants to financially help even more community groups make the necessary changes to make their buildings safer and secure.
Providing financial assistance to community groups for the capital cost of security upgrades will make it harder for opportunistic crime to occur.
Some of the simple upgrades that can be done to boost building security include:
- sensor lighting and external lighting;- alarm systems;- security doors; and- window grills and fencing.
Property crime by its nature is opportunistic. This grants program will empower community groups to make the changes they need to their buildings to make it harder for criminals to target them.
Property crime can have a disproportionate impact on community groups who already often struggle financially to purchase and maintain equipment. Better security of buildings will make sure that the equipment stays safe, and will not fall victim to an opportunistic crime.
Community organisations can apply for one-off grants of up to $10,000 for security projects and eligible community groups are encouraged to submit applications before the closing date of 27 July 2012.
Application packages and further information are available below. Potential applicants can also email jacscommunitygrants@act.gov.au or telephone 6205 4631 for further information.
