AIDSTAR-One captures and shares lessons learned in the global effort to combat HIV through technical briefs, case studies, and a database of good and promising programmatic practices related to HIV prevention, care, and treatment.
AIDSTAR-One/Brazil used social technologies to create sustainable access to programming around HIV/TB co-infection. The Brazil Social Tech Program used social technologies—i.e., behavior change communication, social marketing, social mobilization, and social research—to increase awareness of HIV/TB co-infection risk, encourage health seeking behaviors, and support adherence to directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS).
HIV testing and counseling (HTC) is the crucial bridge to HIV treatment, care, and support. HTC helps people to learn their HIV status, access treatment, prevent transmission, and obtain the support services they need.
AIDSTAR-One worked with USAID’s Africa Bureau and other technical working groups to increase access to care, support, and treatment services among adolescents living with HIV and to provide adolescent-specific technical and policy guidance for program planners and policymakers in the field.
AIDSTAR-One worked with the USAID Eastern Europe and Eurasia Bureau to translate select key resources into Russian.
Addressing gender norms and inequities is essential to reducing HIV risk, mitigating its impact, and increasing access to services for men and women. On behalf of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the United Sates Agency for International Development (USAID), AIDSTAR-One promotes the integration of gender throughout prevention, care, and treatment programs.
AIDSTAR-One provided technical assistance to its two counterparts, the Health Secretariat of the Government of Honduras and the Honduran National Association for People Living with HIV/AIDS (ASONAPVSIDAH), to strengthen the national response to HIV and improve the health status of vulnerable populations.
Building on successes of USAID’s Making Medical Injections Safer (MMIS) project, USAID Missions in Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Uganda provided field support funding through AIDSTAR-One for injection safety, infection prevention and control (IPC), and health care waste management (HCWM).
Access to integrated care and support (C&S) services is critical for the wellbeing of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and their families. On behalf of the United States Agency for International Development and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, AIDSTAR-One promotes practices that address opportunistic infections, nutrition, water safety, psychosocial support and more.
AIDSTAR-One/India provided knowledge management and technical assistance support to India’s National AIDS Control Program (NACP) at national and state levels as well as to the US Government PEPFAR team.
The Global Health Initiative and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief prioritize integrating and mainstreaming HIV services to improve access to prevention, testing, treatment, and care.
In Latin America & the Caribbean, HIV prevention for sexually diverse populations, including transgender populations and men who have sex with men (MSM), is made significantly more difficult by societal norms that stigmatize same-sex sexual activity and favor conformity to strict gender roles. AIDSTAR-One has been exploring the factors that increase the vulnerability of these key populations; their health care needs; the availability of prevention, care, and support services, and the barriers that prevent access to these services.
AIDSTAR-One addresses key thematic issues affecting orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), including child safeguarding and protection, early childhood development (ECD), food and nutrition security (FNS), the integration of maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services with HIV services, and family strengthening.
Through technical assistance and knowledge management resources, AIDSTAR-One supports combination approaches to HIV prevention in both generalized and concentrated epidemics worldwide.
AIDSTAR-One provided a platform for global technical leadership and knowledge management to support the piloting and scale-up of high-quality HIV treatment and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services.
