‘RoboCop’ Getting Crushed by ‘Lego Movie’ at Box Office

22 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros.’ “The Lego Movie” will be the big winner of the President’s Day weekend box office while openings of Sony’s “RoboCop” remake and Warner’s “Winter’s Tale” look disappointing, early forecasts indicate.

“Lego,” with $80 million in its first week, is showing impressive staying power with a Friday projection around $13 million for a 4-day total ranging from $50 million to $60 million. The computer-animated comedy should surpass “Ride Along” as the year’s top grosser by Sunday.

The “RoboCop” reboot, starring Joel Kinnaman, took in $5 million on Wednesday and Thursday and appeared headed for a  four-day total in the high teens — well below recent forecasts and a downbeat portent for a film that carries a $100 million price tag with MGM co-financing. The action film, a remake of the 1987 cop hit, has already grossed $40 million from 27 international markets.

Early results were even gloomier for fantasy romancer “Winter’s Tale” with »

Berlin Review: Darkly Witty 'Calvary,' from Director John Michael McDonagh

1 hour ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

To the pantheon of memorable first lines -- from "Citizen Kane" to "Goodfellas" and "Patton" -- we can now add this from John Michael McDonagh's "Calvary," uttered by a parishioner to his priest in the confession box: "I first tasted semen when I was seven years old."   I believe that is what's known in the Catholic Church as a bitch-slap. To his credit, the burly, rough-hewn, been-around-the-block priest (Brendan Gleeson) can take a verbal punch. Stunned, he maintains his composure, which is good because what comes next is a lot tougher. The parishioner explains that because of his abuse over several years at the hands of a now-dead priest, abuse that has destroyed his soul, he has decided to kill a priest, and not just any old abusive priest out there but Gleeson's Father James, because what good would killing a bad priest do? A good priest, now that would be something. »

Berlinale Prizes: 'Black Coal' Takes Golden Bear, Americans Linklater and Anderson Settle for Silver Prizes

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The 64th Berlinale closed this evening with James Schamus's jury's surprise awarding of the Golden Bear, which many expected to go to Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” but went instead to Diao Yinan’s atmospheric noir, “Bai Ri Yan Huo (Black Coal, Thin Ice).”  Set in Northern China in 1999, it follows an ex-cop investigating the appearance of several chopped up bodies in a coal processing plant and the woman at the heart of the murders, with whom he falls inexorably in love. Intriguing and entertaining, channeling classic American detective thrillers, “Black Coal, Thin Ice” also happens to be overlong and a not a little confusing. It does feature a strong lead actor in Liao Fan, who received the Silver Bear for best actor, but it’s hard to see how the film stands up to “Boyhood" (review here). Perhaps the jury was put off by articles in Berlin newspapers this »
