Yashwardhan Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich industrialist. He has two sons, Rahul (Shahrukh Khan), who is adopted and Rohan. He is the patriarch who has always made the decisions in his household and thinks that it is his right to choose a bride for his elder son. While Yashwardhan chooses Naina (Rani Mukherjee) to be his future daughter-in-law, Rahul wants to marry the girl he loves, Anjali (Kajol), who hails from a middle class family in Chandni Chowk. Rahul marries Anjali without telling his parents. When his father refuses to accept the marriage, he leaves the house and takes Anjali and her sister Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) to London and settles there. Yashwardhan Raichand thereafter focuses his attention on his second son, Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), who is determined to bring Rahul and Anjali back home so that they can be together again.
