AIDSTAR-One/Africa Bureau

AIDSTAR-One has worked with USAID's Africa Bureau to increase access to care, support, and treatment services among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) and provide adolescent-specific technical and policy guidance for program planners and policymakers in the field.

Goals

The specific goals of AIDSTAR-One's work with the Africa Bureau include:

1. Improving the quality and scope of programs for ALHIV to transition toward self-care

2. Providing guidance for policies and programs that improve access to and quality of services for ALHIV

3. Disseminating materials created through the Africa Bureau to wide audience throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

• Creating Youth Friendly HIV Programs and Policies
  AIDSTAR-One worked with USAID’s Africa Bureau and other technical working groups to increase access to care, support, and treatment services among adolescents living with HIV and to provide adolescent-specific technical and policy guidance for program planners and policymakers in the field.
• Improving Injection Safety and Health Care Waste Management
  Building on successes of USAID’s Making Medical Injections Safer (MMIS) project, USAID Missions in Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Uganda provided field support funding through AIDSTAR-One for injection safety, infection prevention and control (IPC), and health care waste management (HCWM).
• Toolkit for Transition of Care and Other Services for Adolescents Living with HIV
  Increasing numbers of perinatally infected children are surviving to adolescence and adulthood. This group is emerging as a unique population and a unique challenge for policy makers, programmers and service providers, thus requiring attention and a stronger understanding of their unique needs to support their continued health and development. This toolkit is designed to support healthcare and community care providers, families, caregivers, and the adolescents themselves with the transition of care, support and transition services from pediatric to adult care. A trainer's manual for health care providers is also included.

• HIV and adolescents: Guidance for HIV testing and counselling and care for adolescents living with HIV
  The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+), issued new HIV recommendations to increase testing, counseling, treatment and care for adolescents. These guidelines provide specific recommendations and expert suggestions — for national policy-makers and program managers and their partners and stakeholders— on prioritizing, planning and providing HIV testing, counseling, treatment and care services for adolescents.
• The adolescents and youth of Zimbabwe's Zvandiri Programme produced a song, "How to Dance in the Storm", describing how they have learned to live with HIV. The Zvandiri Programme is featured in AIDSTAR-One's technical brief, Transitioning of Care and Other Services for Adolescents Living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa.
