Last year, the Grammy Awards closed with a bizarre LL Cool J-led parade that was ostensibly a tribute to the late Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch, but was mostly a mess of nü-metal noise.

This Sunday, the end of the broadcast promises to be infinitely better thanks to a scheduled super group featuring Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl, and Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham. They’re hardly strangers going into the show, of course: Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age are heading out on tour together in Australia; Grohl played drums on several QOTSA albums; QOTSA frontman Josh Homme collaborated with Trent Reznor on a track for Grohl’s Sound City documentary, which also featured Buckingham; and Buckingham played guitars on a few tracks on NIN’s Hesitation Marks.
Several of those members could also be newly minted Grammy winners by the time they hit the stage. Queens of the Stone Age’s excellent …Like Clockwork is nominated for Best Rock Album and Best Engineered Album, and the single “My God Is The Sun” is up for Best Rock Performance. Meanwhile, Nine Inch Nails’ Hesitation Marks will compete for Best Alternative Album in one of the more eclectic races of the evening (other potential victors include Neko Case, Vampire Weekend, The National, and Tame Impala).
Grohl has three nominations to his credit: Best Rock Song for the Sound City Paul McCartney tag-team “Cut Me Some Slack,” and Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media for the Sound City soundtrack (though Butch Vig is actually credited as the producer), plus involvement in Jay Z’s nom for Best Rap Song, thanks to the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” nod in “Holy Grail.” Lindsey Buckingham isn’t nominated for anything this year, but it’s always nice to have him around.
