'Raging Bull' copyright appeal going to Supreme Court

The Supreme Court pondered Tuesday whether the daughter of the man whose work was the basis of the Oscar-winning movie Raging Bull should go another round with a major movie studio over copyright infringement for ownership of boxer Jake LaMotta’s life story.

The Raging Bull case involves an appeal from Paula Petrella, the daughter of Frank Petrella, whose written work inspired the movie. Frank Petrella collaborated with his friend LaMotta on two screenplays and a book, which were used to make the movie directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro. The 1980 film won two Oscars, including best actor for De Niro.

The elder Petrella died in 1981, with his copyrights reverting to his daughter. She sued Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. for copyright infringement for creating and distributing copies of the movie, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said she waited too long before filing her lawsuit.

Now she wants justices to resurrect her lawsuit. They will make a decision later this year.

Sundance 2014: 'I Origins,' 'Calvary' to Fox Searchlight

After making a big splash during last year’s Sundance with the acquisition of The Way, Way Back, the indie arm of Twentieth Century Fox is back with two significant buys out of this year’s festival. In the past two days Fox Searchlight acquired worldwide rights to the existential drama I Origins from writer/director Mike Cahill and U.S. rights to John Michael McDonaugh’s black comedic drama Calvary.

I Origins, which debuted on the first weekend, stars Michael Pitt as a molecular biologist with an eye obsession. He co-stars with Brit Marling and Astrid Berges-Frisbey.

“Mike Cahill’s impressive second feature makes you question our very place in the universe by merging the scientific and emotional worlds in a deeply affecting way,” says Fox Searchlight’s presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley. The two acquired Cahill’s first drama Another Earth in 2011.

Watch an interview with the cast of I Origins here:

Calvary is McDonaugh’s follow-up to his 2011 film The Guard. Both films star Brendan Gleeson. In Calvary, Gleeson plays a priest tormented by his community. Kelly Reilly (Flight) plays his daughter while Chris O’Dowd plays the cuckolded butcher. “Brendan Gleeson gives a tour de force performance… taking us into a world with distinctive characters where the stakes are high,” adds Gilula and Utley.

Searchlight’s buys mark two of the most significant purchases of the festival. Other acquisitions include Focus Features picking up Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here and Sony Pictures Classics buying Whiplash.

Though McDowell, Moss, and Duplass are keeping tight-lipped as to what unusual situation transpires in the film, McDowell did tease that it’s a pretty big turn that happens early on in the film.

Joe Swanberg talks about his kinky new thriller '24 Exposures'

24-EXPOSURES.jpg

Anyone who had only seen prolific director Joe Swanberg‘s two films of last year — the Olivia Wilde-starring Drinking Buddies and the Jane Adams-topped All the Light in the Sky – might conclude he is a sensitive and PC-friendly chronicler of low-key social interactions. On the other hand, anyone who had only seen the filmmaker’s new movie 24 Exposures could come away with the impression that he is an auteur of a rather different, and kinkier, stripe.
