Things are starting to move quickly at Syfy. In one of the fastest turnarounds at the cable network — known for its lengthy, laborious decision-making process — Dominion has been picked up to series a mere four months after it was greenlighted to pilot. The series, from Universal Cable Prods. and Bold Films, will be filmed in Cape Town, South Africa for a 2014 premiere. “Dominion will continue Syfy’s new strategy to commission stand-out genre series that deliver the high-stakes, sci-fi/fantasy experience our audience demands and embraces,” said Syfy president Dave Howe. Based on characters from the 2010 feature Legion, Dominion is an epic supernatural
drama set in the year 25 A.E. when an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, has waged a war of possession against mankind. The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, has chosen to side with humanity against Gabriel. Rising out of the ashes of the 25-year-long battle are newly fortified cities which protect the human survivors. Dominion stars Christopher Egan, Tom Wisdom, Roxanne McKee, Alan Dale, Anthony Stewart Head and Luke Allen-Gale. Scott Stewart, who co-wrote and directed Legion, directed the pilot and executive produces with the film’s producers Michel Litvak and David Lancaster of Bold Films and the pilot’s writer Vaun Wilmott. Film Afrika serves as the local production entity in South Africa.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.
What an amazing cast! Scott and Vaun are going to do a knockout job. Really looking forward to this one!
Chris Egan, who is Heather Ledger’s twin, is the prince of pilot season. Glad he finally got a show picked up, after the canceling of Kings a few seasons back.
Love Kings! And Chris Egan is awesome. Definitely happy to finally see him get that regular series.
The show is up my alley too, so I’ll definitely check it out.
Twin? Well if by twin you mean looks vaguely similar to Ledger, then yes he’s his twin.
All good actors. It’s odd that Syfy did not cast any actors of color. I guess the angels killed all of the Asians, Native Americans, non-white Latinos, Indians, and black folks.
Even worse, they’re filming in Africa, where I hear tell some non-white people live.
Well, hopefully they rectify that with series order.
Ellen- It usually only takes bypassing 1 person of color to make the cast have no persons of color. The industry makes this normal. What a shame.
No disrespect to the pilot, which I hear is quite good, but is Legion the worst movie to ever be turned into a television show. It was a huge failure financially as well as with critics. Can anyone name a worst movie to be turned into a TV show?
Yes, there’s 1: Love is a Many Splendored Thing
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Terrible film. Superlative television.
To be fair the television show was more or less based off of the original script which wasn’t what they shot, so it’s a little bit different than this situation which is really a spin-off.
In Buffy’s case, the TV series was based on Joss Whedon’s original concept, which others had butchered in the film. Still, there’s no reason they can’t make a good series with the right people involved.
What happened to the Blumhouse project? The space idea, Sojourn?
I would rather see a show based on Constantine than this.
This is Syfy. Be glad they are finally putting money into quality shows, and we’re getting something beyond Sharknado and wrestling!
Well-deserved, and congratulations to Vaun. I look forward to watching it!
Great! I haven’t seen the movie, but concept sounds like it should make a good TV series.
Also, the statement from the president gives me hope that the network will finally start producing some actual sci-fi and fantasy series instead of just reality programs. I’m curious if they are going to move forward with 12 Monkeys, since casting announcements have been coming pretty regularly.
They never really stopped doing sci fi/fantasy shows, it’s just that it’s hard now for many of them to get a good hold in the ratings game these days. Plus reality shows merely adds more variety for the Syfy brand like Face/Off and Heroes of Cosplay, although WWE is quite off-brand but at least, it’s the only one.
I guess you’ve never seen the shows Warehouse 13, Haven, Defiance, Being Human, pick-ups Continuum and Lost Girl, plus, recent shows Alphas, Eureka and Sanctuary. But, yes, it’ll be good to see even more sci-fi/horror/fantasy shows on SyFy.
Just glad to see Howe getting off his butt and shaking things up a little. Heaven knows…it was like pulling teeth getting anything done when I was around there. Looks to be a good series, wish them the best of luck!
I’m surprised you’d even admit you had anything to do with the horror that’s been Siffy.
Personally, I see no difference: Siffy still loves horror and remakes. It’s still a sad joke jumping on every bad idea (a 12 Monkeys TV show, really?!!!!)
A remake of a bad movie isn’t exactly brilliant IMO.
Why not turn a bad film into a bad TV show? don’t quite get Bold’s mandate besides find small roles for Litvak’s wife and employ an awful development team
This is going to be AWESOME!!!!! Count me in!!!
With Mark Stern gone, Syfy might start running like real network.
Where is the Science Fiction?
Howe has it wrong, the fans of SciFi channel want Actual Science in their Fiction. Not religious nuttery.
Stop blending bad fantasy into shows and calling it SciFi! And stop cancelling shows with huge fan bases!!!
What a load!
Love the comment about Legion flopping financially. Wrong. The budget for Legion was only 26 million. It made 64 million, give or take, as a total. Guess almost tripling your earnings means failure. Lololol
