ICASA 2011: Accelerating Scale-Up of VMMC for HIV Prevention

Press Conference

In recent years compelling evidence has emerged that voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), when provided by well-trained health professionals, reduces men’s risk of acquiring HIV from their female partners by approximately 60%. In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) began urging countries with high HIV prevalence and low levels of male circumcision to expand access to VMMC services. Since then, 14 priority countries in Eastern and Southern Africa have been targeted for expansion of VMMC services. Modeling estimates from 2011 indicate that increasing the coverage of circumcision to reach 80% of adult males 15 to 49 years old in these 14 countries by 2015 (eg, 20.3 million circumcisions) would potentially avert 3.4 million new HIV infections and save USD 16.5 million by 2025. By the end of 2010, more than 550,000 men aged 15-49 had been circumcised in the 14 priority countries.

The 16th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 4 – 8 December 2011. During the conference, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), UNAIDS, and WHO collaborated on several key events in support of VMMC for HIV prevention, including the following:

  • PEPFAR/UNAIDS/WHO Meeting - Accelerating Scale up of VMMC for HIV Prevention in Eastern and Southern Africa
  • PEPFAR/UNAIDS Press Conference - Launch of Five-Year Action Framework for Accelerated Access to VMMC for HIV Prevention in Eastern and Southern Africa
  • PEPFAR/UNAIDS Satellite Session - VMMC: Cost, Impact and Challenges of Accelerated Scale-Up in Eastern and Southern Africa

Materials from the PEPFAR/UNAIDS/WHO Meeting and PEPFAR/UNAIDS Satellite Session can be found below.

Materials from the PEPFAR/UNAIDS Press Conference announcing the launch of the Five-Year Action Framework for Accelerated Access to VMMC for HIV Prevention in Eastern and Southern Africa are available here.
