Jury sides with Courtney Love in trial over tweet

A jury says Courtney Love did not defame one of her former lawyers in a 2010 Twitter post.

Friday’s verdict comes after an eight-day trial that centered on Love’s statements against San Diego-based lawyer Rhonda Holmes. Love hired Holmes to pursue a case against the estate of her late husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The case was never filed, and Holmes said Love fired her.

The singer’s tweet suggested that Holmes had been “bought off.”

Attorneys for Love maintained that the Hole singer meant for the post to be a private message and few people saw it.

Holmes’ lawyers sought $8 million in damages.

Love attended and testified at the trial but was not present when the verdict was read.

Three cops suspended for Justin Bieber escort

An official says three Florida police officers have been suspended for giving Justin Bieber an unauthorized escort from the airport.

Opa-locka Assistant City Manager David Chiverton said Friday that the officers were suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.

Police escorts from the Opa-locka Executive Airport are not uncommon, but they must follow procedure. Chiverton says the one that accompanied Bieber on Monday had not been authorized.

According to Chiverton, investigators are still trying to get more information from the airport and the officers about where police escorted Bieber.

Bieber was free on bail Friday after an arrest on charges of DUI, driving with an expired license and resisting arrest. Miami Beach police say Bieber smelled of alcohol when he was stopped after drag-racing down a residential street early Thursday.

Michigan police say the father of multi-platinum-selling singer Mary J. Blige was stabbed and critically injured.

Police say his ex-girlfriend is in jail on an attempted murder charge.

Battle Creek police say the attack happened about 7 a.m. Thursday at the apartment of 63-year-old Thomas Blige.

Police say he had a neck wound and was taken to Kalamazoo’s Bronson Methodist Hospital, which says it has no information on his condition.

Detective Sgt. Jim Martens tells the Battle Creek Enquirer that officers recovered the knife and found Blige’s ex-girlfriend with blood on her clothing. She’s in the Calhoun County jail and is expected to be arraigned Friday.

Forty-three-year-old Mary J. Blige is a Grammy award winner whose hits include “Real Love,” “No More Drama,” and “Family Affair.”

'Behind the Candelabra' author, ex-Liberace lover sentenced to prison

A former lover of Liberace who was the subject of Behind the Candelabra, the HBO film on the pianist’s life, has been sentenced to eight to 20 years in a Nevada prison for failing another court-ordered drug test while on probation for burglary and identity theft convictions.

Washoe District Judge Patrick Flanagan sentenced Scott Thorson on Wednesday after a string of bad drug tests capped by his failure to show up at a court-ordered treatment facility.

Flanagan originally suspended the prison sentence in July and gave Thorson a second chance in September after testing positive for methamphetamine, but he failed tests twice in October and again on Nov. 1. He was arrested Nov. 19 after violating an order to enter an inpatient treatment facility in Reno two weeks earlier, court records show.

Thorson, 54, whose real name is Jess Marlow, had admitted he was an addict but insisted he was determined to get sober when he tearfully appealed to the judge in September to spare him from prison.

Teen who stole Guy Fieri's Lamborghini gets life in prison

A Northern California man convicted of a series of crimes, including attempted murder and the theft of celebrity chef Guy Fieri’s Lamborghini, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison plus 21 years and four months.

Max Wade, 19, had been found guilty in October of attempted murder, vehicle theft, and other crimes, the Marin Independent Journal reported. He was charged in Marin County Superior Court as an adult even though he was under 18 at the time the crimes were committed, the paper said.

Among Wade’s crimes was a drive-by shooting that occurred on April 13, 2012, in Mill Valley.

Wade was convicted of firing at a truck occupied by two acquaintances — Landon Wahstrom, 18, and Eva Dedier, 17, of San Rafael.

Prosecutors alleged that Wade desired Dedier and was jealous that she was with Wahlstrom.

The investigation of the shooting led detectives to Wade’s storage locker, where he was keeping the $200,000 sports car stolen from Fieri, known for his Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The Lamborghini was taken in 2011 while it was at a San Francisco dealership. It was stolen by a burglar who rappelled from a high window, authorities said.
