The biggest story of 2011 was ...

From the passing of Apple's Steve Jobs and the rise (and eventual fall) of Herman Cain to the death of Osama Bin Laden and Charlie Sheen's winning personality, Willie Geist brings us all of the big news of 2011.

Can we have an ALL OF THE ABOVE listing? These selections are all worthy of trend setting and top priorities. Even the murderer Casey Anthony which people have forgotten about already.

Agreed! A busy year for the news people. Any other quieter year, any one of these stories could have taken top spot.

Yeah, I'm having a lot of trouble picking just one. This year was huge for news. I'm also surprised that the death of Gadhafi wasn't on there, but that stupid trial of Casey Anthony was (unless they're counting Gadhafi's death as part of the Arab Spring).

Bin Laden's death was huge, no doubt, but some of these other stories have a much larger impact on the world. I can't pick.

What was the biggest story of 2011?

None of the above; see my entry below

IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID!

The biggest story should be; Congress passes and Obama signs the Defense authorization law, allowing for the arrest and imprisonment of American citizens without trial and imprisonment up to life in prison of anyone suspected of being a threat to the peace and security of the Government of the United States, very few news media even mentioned it.

Saxon...

That is probably the biggest story long-term but, we as a nation, don't think that way. We'll allow them to chip away at our liberties until one day we'll wake up to something completely different and wonder where to he!! we are.

However, from the short-term perspective, I cannot see how the earthquake in Japan didn't make the top. From the shear death toll, the short term damage to their economy, and the long term issues they'll be dealing with regarding food, infrastructure, and lingering problems with the nuke sites, I feel it surpasses OBL and all the others combined. True, OBL is dead but he pretty much did his damage. Even when he was here and with him gone, others have stepped in to continue and expand the Jihad against us...

Anyway, JMO...

cantake...

That's the very first thing I thought of...nothing that happened in 2011 comes even close to what happened in Japan earlier this year, short term and long term.

I'll bet you that if you asked Americans three questions about that disaster, a third of them would reply "What earthquake?"..."Which tsunami?"...and "What kind of nuclear disaster?".

The economy was news in 2008 and has remained in the news since with eyes on 2012 from a global perspective. But for 2011 specifically, it's a toss up between events like bin Laden (in terms of presidential history) and others such as Japan, which was not just another tsunami but brought questions about nuclear power back into the headlines. The 2011 event that will have the greatest impact in the years ahead will be the Arab Spring, and why Time made the protester the person of the year.

it's a toss up between events like bin Laden

Bin Laden was just a figurehead of an un-uniformed global terrorist organization. His elimination, although symbolic, is no more significant than the death of Kim Jong Il, other than the North Korean's do wear uniforms.

which was not just another tsunami but brought questions about nuclear power back into the headlines.

As analysis will show, building a massive nuclear power plant on the beach of an island nation that is wracked with one earthquake after another, leaving itself vulnerable to destructive tsunamis, was the only decision that was flawed in Japan. The earthquake did not damage Fukushima's Daiichi nuclear power plant, the tsunami did.

The biggest story should be; Congress passes and Obama signs the Defense authorization law

More proof of Obama's and our Congresses disdain for the fact that our Constitution is indeed a Charter of Negative Liberties and needs to remain as such. Until we elect true Constitutional Originalists back into government we will have more of our Freedoms as a Republic stripped from us in the name of Democracy.

The Framer's warned us of the "excesses of democracy" and it's attendant "Tyranny-By-Majority". It's a shame most Americans only have a vague notion of the Constitutions preamble and believe it carries any legal weight. I don't think any more ominous result of our pathetic education system can be exposed.

BTW, not guilty means she is NOT a murderer. She may be trash, but she is NOT a murderer.

Osama being killed was a bit of an anti-climax. If we had just gone after him and not bothered with an all out war, he would have been dead ten years ago. We needed to drop in a small army by air and gotten rid of him at the very beginning. Then we could have gone home and saved billions. Oh, I forgot, Halliburton wouldn't have made any money on that!

It ain't over in Japan yet, or for many years to come. That disaster is still unfolding and the 500 or so quakes altogether have loaded the fault near Tokyo. The next big one could come any time. See Japan's Killer Quake on the PBS.org Nova page.

Maybe the biggest story of 2011 is the ever more rapid decline of the American mind.

If an alien spaceship was circling Earth and studying Americans, they might determine that with the most important people in this country seemingly being the Kardashians, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Aniston, the utterly talent-free Ashton Kutcher, and whichever numbskull 'Housewives' of whichever 'County'...that there is absolutely no reason to have any hope for this planet or it's people.

And lay waste to us all to create a parking lot for their ships.

Maybe that'll be the biggest story of 2012 !

The top story this year is the same one it's been every year since Dubya got re-elected. It's the amazing, astounding, mind-boggling, incredible stupidity of the American people who support the criminal gang of corporate thugs known as the republican party. If they even TRIED to disguise their agenda, their support might be somewhat understandable, but they screw the country, come right out and SAY that they want to continue doing it and people STILL vote for them! The American people are the absolute stupidest people on the face of the planet, hands down.

The repug Gov. Walker of WI is a huge story to me. He is being recalled and just was awarded the Joe McCarthy award and is proud! He just made an announcement about giving the state a $80 million "EXTRA FOUND" money for the disabled and lifting the cap on enrollment, he took away in his "repair budget". The money came from the federal gov. grant and because of the recall he took credit on the mandated dollars. This is a prime example of the bull the GOP mentality. He held a meeting in Milwaukee, hundreds of miles away from the public in northern WI about the proposed mine deal who contributed over $50,000 in donations and has passed legislation to eliminate the EPA laws so it will seal the deal!! Talk about GOP corruption!!

Actually, as much as I hate to say this, the trial of Casey Anthony was big because of the way it dragged on and on for months. It seems some of these other headlines faded out quicker. My sister-in-law was completely in the dark about Occupy Wallstreet. She knew nothing about what was going on there. But she was well aware of the Casey Anthony trial. But I blame the media. If this was some poor black or Mexican family, no one would have heard anything about it. But since it was a seemingly normal White middle class family, it was all over the place. I just hope this country gets its priorities in line in 2012.

The Arab spring will be seen as the biggest story for people in the future. The Economy will be the second biggest, The Japanese meltdown the third, and Bin Laden a foot note. Casey Anthony will not be remembered. It was a total waste of time. The others will fit somewhere in between.

The meltdown in Japan may grow into a bigger story over time.

Dummyup balanced budget is not a surplus. It was democrats failed social program "affordable housing" which took the money. Then dems stimulus & spend spend spend on borrowed debt. democrats in two yrs. out spent all previous administrations combined. - humanmatter. Where is the repaid TARP with interst? where are those shovel ready jobs? where is the trillion in savings Obamacare promised? Redistribution of wealth does not create wealth.

You have a selective memory. It was Bush who pushed the affordable housing dream for minorities, relaxing mortgage requirements while appointing cronies to (not) oversee Fannie, Freddie, Countrywide, etc. (We won't speak of Newtie being an advisor....) There are way too many news stories across the media for you to deny that the entire housing mess was due to Bush's misguided "ownership" nonsense that allowed people with nothing to buy houses they couldn't afford. You cannot blame Obama, but if you want, I will grant blaming the greedy banksters who got major bonuses for ramming bad mortgages through, coupled with bundling them into derivatives that were worthless. Oh yes, - check your history. It was Bush who pushed through the first major TARP program with zero accountability (remember that if we didn't push the initial bankster bailout in 48 hours or less the world would end.) And then he sat on his hands while the speculators drove oil so far up that Bush's daddy made a cool billion in the Summer of 08. And historically, "redistribution of wealth" does actually create a larger multiplier effect than just allowing the rich to sit on it.

Steve - how about calling it as it was - downgrade was due to Teabaggers and Republicans refusing to compromise on ANYTHING!!! Not Obama's fault.

The GOP didn't believe the downgrade would happen, in spite of all the warnings from non-partisan economists.

Actually some the best stories wasn't even covered. Among the stories that we at Newsvine opinionated on were some the most heart warming. We ought to have more of these. It brings us down to reality and let us know there are basically good being done throughout the world.

I found the Earthquake and Nuclear Plant story, my top story; however, my heart warming story was how the little girl faired with her Christmas when she sent a note attached to two pink balloons.
