Movie Poster of the Week: “Wild Strawberries” and the Posters of Jerzy Flisak

17 minutes ago | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Above: 1960 poster by Jerzy Flisak for Wild Strawberries (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1957)

One of my favorite Polish poster designers, or indeed favorite poster designer from any country, is Jerzy Flisak (1930-2008). Incredibly prolific—I’ve seen maybe 200 Flisak movie posters and he made many more during his 30 year career—Flisak started out as a satirical cartoonist. A cheerful, simple, almost childlike style is evident in much of his work, which tends towards the bright, bold and colorful, often peopled with rosy cheeked buxom ladies. Much of that work is terrific and quite well known—like his posters for The Fireman’s Ball and Paper Moon—but what draws me to Flisak is his work that pulls in the opposite direction: towards the more serious, abstract and monochrome. Before Flisak was a cartoonist he had studied architecture and there is a very strong sense of structure, space and form in his work. »

'Battlestar Galactica' Producer Ronald D. Moore Adapts Another Cult Fan Property With Starz Series 'Outlander'

56 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

With his Syfy series "Battlestar Galactica," executive producer Ronald D. Moore took a beloved '70s science fiction series and reworked it into a sprawling space drama that tackled themes of faith and what makes us human, winning fans and acclaim from within and outside of genre fandom. For his next series, Moore is adapting another property with a passionate fandom -- the "Outlander" series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, which tell the story of a former World War II British Army nurse named Claire Randall who ends up getting transported to 18th century Scotland, where she meets and becomes romantically involved with a man named Jamie Fraser. Starz, who are planning on debuting "Outlander" later this year, emphasized the devotion of "Outlander" fans in a teaser reel that, along with early footage, showed crowds holding up signs and shrieking in a way that recalls "Twilight." Critics Debate the Highs and Lows of 2013 -- And What to Expect in 2014

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Welcome to Critical Consensus, Indiewire’s recurring column in which two critics from our Criticwire Network discuss topics in current cinema with Indiewire critic Eric Kohn. This week, Salon critic Andrew O’Hehir trades e-mails with Vogue’s John Powers about the best and worst of 2013 as well as what they’re anticipating in the new year. Eric Kohn: John, your top 10 list overlaps with Andrew's to some degree, although you include two major fall season films absent from his list: "Gravity" and "American Hustle." Taking these studio movies into account, do you think this was a more promising year than usual for Hollywood filmmaking? The studios had a rough summer, but do these films make up for it? Or would it make more sense to look at these films as anomalies in an otherwise crass machine? John Powers: I don't think that this film year reveals much about »

2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Indiewire will provide updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Award nominations through January 16th, 2014, when the nominations are announced. Oprah vs. Lupita? That seemed like the potential showdown here, but then the Golden Globes went and snubbed Ms. Winfrey and made her somewhat less of a sure thing. Lupita remains a lock, along with last year's best actress winner Jennifer Lawrence, who seems to have replaced Oprah as Lupita's biggest competition. June Squibb ("Nebraska"), Julia Roberts ("August: Osage County") and Sally Hawkins ("Blue Jasmine") have all received their fair share of precursor notices, and the final two nominations should be made up of them. Unless the Oscars go the way of the Hpfa and snub Oprah, or decide to do something unheard of and nominate Scarlett Johannson's voicework in "Her." 2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actor

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Indiewire will provide updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Award nominations through January 16th, 2014, when the nominations are announced. Still the least clear of all the acting races, the SAGs and Globes have at least made it known that Jared Leto and Michael Fassbender are pretty locked in here, with Barkhad Abdi, Bradley Cooper, Daniel Bruhl and James Gandolfini all close behind. But even though Tom Hanks and Jonah Hill got snubbed at both awards, their late-in-the-year films could bounce them back in contention. It all makes for probably the most unpredictable of the acting races when it comes to the nominations, with those 8 men each standing quite reasonable chances at making the cut, and another handful waiting in the wings to give Thursday morning its biggest surprise. Best supporting actor predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here. The Locks: 1. Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) 2. Michael Fassbender (12 Years a. »

2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Actor

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Indiewire will provide updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Award nominations through January 16th, 2014, when the nominations are announced. This is truly one of the most exceptional and crowded best actor races in recent memory.  Chiwetel Ejiofer, Robert Redford, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Dern, Oscar Isaac, Forest Whitaker, Christian Bale and Joaquin Phoenix all have remarkable performances that in any other year would be certainties for nominations. But this year, it's gonna be tough.  The precursors have been all over the place. Ejiofor, Dern and Hanks are the only three to have received SAG, Globe, Critics Choice and BAFTA nods, though all the rest of them have had their fair share of recognition as well. Indiewire will provide updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Award nominations through January 16th, 2014, when the nominations are announced. Here's our take on the best adapted screenplay category, where John Ridley's script for "12 Years a Slave" is a definite frontrunner. "Philomena," "Captain Phillips," "August: Osage County," "Before Midnight" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" are next in line, with one of them going to get left out. Compared to original screenplay it's a much weaker race with roughly half the contenders. Best adapted screenplay predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here. The Lock: 1. 2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Original Screenplay

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Indiewire will provide updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Award nominations through January 16th, 2014, when the nominations are announced. Here's our take on the extremely crowded best original screenplay category, which seems to have found itself with five seemingly safe nominees: "Blue Jasmine," "Nebraska," "Her," "Inside Lllewyn Davis" and "American Hustle." But this category is the most crowded it has been in years, which means it's quite possible one of them -- probably "Davis" or "Jasmine" -- could fall out in favor of "Dallas Buyers Club," "Enough Said," "Fruitvale Station," 'Saving Mr. Banks" or "Gravity." Meet the 2014 Sundance Filmmakers #6 : Jim Mickle Returns to Sundance With Revenge Thriller 'Cold in July'

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jim Mickle has been interested in film-making since he was 13 years old. After studying film at Nyu, he spent several years working in independent films as a storyboard artist, a grip, and an editor. His projects include "Mulberry Street" (a film festival hit eventually acquired by Lionsgate), "Stake Land" (a vampire apocalypse film released by IFC Films) and last year's Sundance American re-imagining of "We Are What We Are." Mickle told Indiewire "With all of our films we're trying to do something more than what's on the surface, whether it's horror or thriller or contemporary noir." What it's about: "It's based on the novel by Joe R. Lansdale. A small town father kills a burglar in self defense in 1980's East Texas. He then comes face-to-face with the dead guy's ex-con father, who comes to town looking for revenge. From there, the two fathers set a larger, unexpected story into motion. »

Meet the 2014 Sundance Filmmakers #5 : Jeff Baena Fuses Young Love and the Undead in 'Life After Beth'

4 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

L.A.-based Jeff Baena grew up in Florida and studied film production at Nyu. In 2004 he cowrote David O. Russell's "I Heart Huckabees," released by Fox Searchlight. This is his first feature film as a director. Also, he told Indiewire, "I'm really good at games."  What it's about: "A guy's girlfriend comes back from the dead, and they try and pick up their relationship where it left off." What it's really about: "The contingent nature of the universe, the fleeting nature of love and joy, and the consequences of hanging onto something too tightly instead of letting it go." Biggest challenges: "Our biggest challenge was primarily time. There were days that we were shooting 10 or 11 pages of the script with stunts, special effects, extensive make up, and visual effects. I ended up employing an approach that relegated all the actiony stuff to the periphery while emphasizing the interpersonal dynamics between the characters. »
