'Chicago P.D.' premiere: Cartels, decapitation, and one very angry octopus

Ever since Southland was canceled, I’ve had a police drama-sized hole in my heart, which is why I was excited to give Chicago P.D. a chance. But instead, Chicago P.D. reminded me of another cop show I’d previewed several months ago — Low Winter Sun.

For me, Chicago P.D., Dick Wolf’s latest project, was partly just another police procedural, not unlike an episode of Law & Order, and partly Low Winter Sun-esque in that the Chicago Fire spinoff was clearly attempting to have a darker tone. (Read: Cartels, big crime, dirty cops, etc.) Perfect example: The show’s opening scene featured Sgt. Henry Voight (Jason Beghe), the unconventional raspy-voiced leader, taking a drug dealer out on a gravel road and putting a gun to his face before telling him to stay out of his city. Oh, and he took a couple grand off the dealer that he didn’t exactly seem to turn in to evidence. Just like that, we had a complicated character and a procedural that was doing its best to feel gritty.

Vin Diesel posts Paul Walker tribute video

paul-walker-vin-diesel.jpg

Vin Diesel has posted a video on his Facebook page in tribute to his late Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker. It’s a long video, running close to 20 minutes, and it mostly finds the two of them in off-the-cuff moments: On the set between takes, on the Furious 6 press junket. There’s a lot of genial back-slapping, and towards the end — if you really want to cry — the cast and crew of Fast & Furious 7 get together to wish Walker a happy birthday. Watch below:

Is Shia LaBeouf a performance artist? Performance artists weigh in

The latest in the Shia LaBeouf saga — you know, his string of recent plagiarism accusations (and admissions) — is the belief that the actor is simply a performance artist in the middle of his latest act. Therefore, his tweets, copied works, skywriting, etc., are all in the name of art.

Now, we have no idea whether there’s any truth to that theory, and considering LaBeouf has yet to confirm or deny this, we were left with only one thing to do: Ask bona fide performance artists their opinions. We emailed a handful of artists to ask two things:

Tupac Shakur musical 'Holler If Ya Hear Me' set for Broadway

holler-if-ya-hear-me.jpg

After the January closure of Annie, Broadway’s Palace Theatre has found its next tenant.

Holler If Ya Hear Me, a new musical featuring the music of rapper Tupac Shakur, will open on Broadway at the Palace on June 19. Preview performances for the brand-new show begin May 26. Casting for the show has not yet been announced.

Written by Todd Kreidler and directed by Tony nominee Kenny Leon (who will also direct Denzel Washington in this season’s forthcoming A Raisin in the Sun revival), Holler If Ya Hear Me is an original, non-biographical story about two friends in the inner-city in the Midwest.

For what it’s worth, the musical takes its title from an autobiographical song by the late rapper off his second solo album, released in 1993. In the music video, a girl witnesses her father’s death, finds money to buy a gun, and subsequently rallies her young friends to ostensibly avenge his death. The show does not purport to tell the story of Tupac Shakur, but will use his poetic music and lyrics to offer “a window into the realities of the streets still relevant today.”

The packed design team includes choreographer Wayne Cilento, set designer David Gallo, costumer Reggie Ray, and lighting designer Mike Baldassari. Shakur’s mother, Afeni, will serve as one of the show’s producers.

'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' coming to Broadway

The U.K. play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, based on the bestselling book, will transfer to Broadway this fall. This follows a successful West End run for the show, which received seven Olivier Awards this year, including Best New Play.

The production is directed by Marianne Elliott, and Simon Stephens adapted Mark Haddon’s book. For those that haven’t read the book, the story follows fifteen-year-old Christopher, a brilliant but socially inept boy who is accused of killing a neighbor’s dog.  But Christopher’s attempts to find out who really committed the crime end up changing his life forever.

Casting information for the Broadway version hasn’t been announced, but the show will open this fall at the Barrymore Theatre.

Retroactively Relevant: Shia LaBeouf singing about lying on 'Even Stevens' -- VIDEO

even-steven-shia-labeouf.jpg

“No one can produce an excellent excuse like you.”

Disney fans likely remember that line from the iconic-to-millenials musical episode of Even Stevens. And now the song “I Always Find a Way,” sung by a preteen Shia LaBeouf about talking/lying his way out of anything, takes on new relevance in the wake of LaBeouf’s long-running plagiarism scandal.

It’s exhausting to keep up with: First, LaBeouf admitted he plagiarized Daniel Clowes’ comic Justin M. Damiano in a short film, then he unleashed a series of also-plagiarized apologies culminating most recently in a sky written one that also randomly drew the attention of Lena Dunham. And as over it as you, a person who was done with LaBeouf right around the time of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, might be, he’s clearly not anywhere close to done with infuriating the Internet.

So instead of us saying anything more, we’ll just let LaBeouf give his very own statement, straight from the lyrics of his 2002 Even Stevens tune: He’ll always find a way to get out of something, whether it’s gym class or consequences for lying. 'Hotwives of Orlando': Paul Scheer does his best Andy Cohen on new Hulu show -- TRAILER PREMIERE

NeNe Leakes better watch her back. Some new housewives are taking over the south — and these women are hot.

The Hotwives of Orlando, that is. Paramount Digital Entertainment, the studio behind Burning Love, and Hulu are teaming up to produce the parody series starring Casey Wilson and Angela Kinsey. Comedian Paul Scheer likes to see himself as the Andy Cohen of it all, producing for Paramount with Jonathan Stern and even appearing on the show in a reunion episode. It’s no surprise to anyone who knows Scheer, who admits to being a diehard Housewife fan and watching the Bravo shows religiously with his wife. (For the record, Beverly Hills and Atlanta are his favorite cities.) “When I see something I really like, I want to do that,” Scheer tells EW. Scheer is no stranger to parody, having appeared on three seasons of NTSF:SD:SUV on Adult Swim and his “Arscheerio Paul” character, a send up to late-night host Arsenio Hall.

The inaugural season of Hotwives takes us inside the uber-exclusive and glamorous world of six hot housewives livin’ large in Central Florida’s sexiest city, Orlando.  The show follows a cast of ladies as they fight over pretty much everything except for their love of shoes, plastic surgery, and the pursuit of spending all of their husbands’ money. Scheer was inspired after seeing writers Danielle Schneider (who also appears on the show) and Dannah Phirman. perform at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater in black turtlenecks, interpreting words from some of Bravo’s housewives into dramatic monologues. But Scheer is sure that people who aren’t familiar with the original show can enjoy these hot wives too. “It’s super funny. These characters are already so outlandish that when you add comedy to it, it makes it bigger. I don’t think it matters if you’re a fan or not. You will get it.”
