  • Echo Chamber: Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig Defends Selfies

By Carrie Battan on November 22, 2013 at 10:28 a.m.

    Photo via Ezra Koenig's Instagram

"I think that anybody who's anti-selfie is really just a hater. Because, truthfully, why shouldn't people take pictures of themselves? When I'm on Instagram and I see that somebody took a picture of themselves, I'm like, 'Thank you.' I don't need to see a picture of the sky, the trees, plants. There's only one you... There's all this bullshit about 'the younger kids today are more self-absorbed.' It's like, give me a fucking break! I've been in nursing homes, where my grandma is. I've seen some of the most selfish people on the planet in there... And the world that these kids are born into literally could not get more selfish. The world is so fucked-up and unequal and full of assholes. You can't blame it on the younger generation."

"Shout out to over-sexed teenagers. Shout out to sex abbreviations that sound like the word 'puberty.' Shout out to animal euthanasia as sexual innuendo. Shout out to the new genre: nymphomaniac pop. Shout out to my Biebs. Go get some, bro. I’ll be reading the psalms, eating Scotch oatmeal cookies, etc. The world is abundant."

  • Echo Chamber: Best Coast on Drake, Her New Album's Biggest Inspiration

By Jenn Pelly on November 19, 2013 at 02:58 p.m.

"This is going to sound totally weird, but Drake is a huge inspiration. It's not going to be a rap record, but in terms of lyrics and emotion. I cannot stop listening to Drake. I am obsessed. It's ridiculous how obsessed I am. When I listen to his music, what he's saying is so real and it doesn't feel sugarcoated or fake at all. I definitely took inspiration from that when writing lyrics. My lyrics have always been straightforward and honest and not sugarcoated but this time around I was like 'Okay I'm going to say what I have to say and I'm going to feel like Drake about it. I'll just say it.'"

  • Echo Chamber: Best Coast Stands Up to Hecklers

By Jenn Pelly on October 30, 2013 at 11:45 a.m.

"I don’t put up with hecklers…When people come to see us play, they need to understand that we’re in charge of the show. We’re performing for you. We make the setlist. We pick the songs we’re going to play. And you paid money to come see us do that. So if you yell some annoying thing to me, I am not going to pretend I didn’t hear it. Last week, we played at Indiana University, and there was this kid that kept yelling 'Play something better!' and I was like 'What the fuck does that mean?' And then he threw a cheeseburger at me, and I lost it. I was like 'Fuck you! Get the fuck out of here!' I was just screaming on the mic, and all the kids at the concert were like, 'That was so badass, I can’t believe you did that!'"

  • Echo Chamber: Foals' Yannis Philippakis Tears Into Spotify

By Jenn Pelly on October 30, 2013 at 09:07 a.m.

"I’d rather somebody stole the record on vinyl than bought it or streamed it on Spotify. Because I think you should listen to music on vinyl, and I think basically anything is better than that. It's like going to a restaurant when the chef and all the waiting staff have worked their asses off, and you leave coppers as a tip, and you don't even pay the bill. That's basically what Spotify's like, I think."

"Seems like the YouTube music awards are pretty much the same as the VMAs. I don't really see the point. If it's all about hits sure I get it but let's be fair. YouTube award nominations clearly don't care about cutting edge/innovation. They had an opportunity to shine a light on all the artists that they helped to gain notoriety just to shit on them for uber famous acts. No disrespect to the nominees yadda yadda"
