Justice Sotomayor was participated today in an academic dialogue with her Salvadoran Supreme Court counterparts

The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador is pleased to announce the visit of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor to El Salvador this week.

Justice Sotomayor’s visit comes at the personal invitation of U.S. Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte. During her stay in El Salvador, Justice Sotomayor will participate in an academic dialogue with her Salvadoran Supreme Court counterparts, meet with students from the the Supérate! social responsibility program, and engage Salvadoran law school students.

Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to sit on the Supreme Court in August 2009, becoming the first Hispanic woman to adjudicate from on the country’s highest court.  Her appointment filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice David Souter.

Sotomayor was born in The Bronx, New York City and is of Puerto Rican descent.  She graduated with an A.B., summa cum laude, from Princeton University in 1976 and received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979.
Justice Sotomayor will not participate in any open press events during her visit to El Salvador.
