The European Environment Agency and Microsoft are partnering to deliver the Eye on Earth solution, which provides European policy makers and citizens with online access to the EEA’s important environmental data on air and water quality. Based on the latest Microsoft cloud computing technology including Windows Azure, Eye on Earth takes the EEA’s data and visualizes it on Bing Maps. Windows Azure provided EEA with a scalable and flexible platform to meet the needs of the EEA along with Europe’s policy makers and citizens.

Peanut Farmers in Indonesia Benefit from Technology
Peanut farmers near Bogor, Indonesia have benefited from a technology center set up by the Bogor Institute of Agriculture in partnership with Microsoft which has provided them with access to the internet for the first time. They learned best practices from other farmers and have doubled their profits within a year of switching to new farming techniques after accessing research from the technology center.

At the Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, doctors and staff have utilized journals and research found through HINARI, the Research4Life program providing free or low-cost access to cutting-edge global healthcare research for developing countries. With HINARI’s resources, Bach Mai has built one of the country’s most modern health facilities and medical libraries. Benefitting from a free annual subscription to HINARI, the hospital now employs 800 doctors and supports over 2,200 patients.

UNESCO Partnership - Innovative Teachers Forums
As part of our public-private partnership with UNESCO they actively support the Microsoft Innovative Teachers Forums. In 2007 they co-sponsored the Asian event in Cambodia and hosted the EMEA event at their headquarters in Paris. Over 22,000 teachers applied for the Asia event, which included activities such as curriculum development in Angor Wat using Photsynth; and the award ceremony at the EMEA event was held at the Louvre.

Supporting Micro-business in Latin America is critical to economic development. The single biggest source of jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean; some 50 million microenterprises provide employment to 120 million people, generating nearly two-thirds of the regions GDP. The Micronet program is the result of an alliance between the World Bank and Microsoft, providing technology support to entrepreneurs. A local coffee exporter saw its exports double with the help of skills learned from the Micronet Centre in Quenca, Ecuador.

Fostering Government Capacity Building in Latin America
Fostering government capacity building in Latin America, the George Washington School of Political Management together with Microsoft and the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru in Lima are educating politicians on the use of ICT in many facets of politics and good governance. The program has trained over 1,000 politicians in Latin America and is expanding to Spain and Russia. The Mayor of Milaflores in Peru, a graduate of the program, has spearheaded innovative ICT programs to deliver improved services to citizens.
