Strengthening Gender Programming

Addressing gender norms, roles, and inequities is both an important objective and a common challenge for HIV programs. Without addressing the way that gender influences access to resources, information, individual agency, and social norms, efforts to curb the epidemic will continue to be constrained. To support the expansion of gender integration into United States government (USG) programs, the PEPFAR Gender Technical Working Group (GTWG), in collaboration with AIDSTAR-One, convened a technical exchange in Johannesburg, South Africa from October 28 to 30, 2009.
