“Magical Pets on Parade” and pet costume contest set for Sat., Oct. 26 in Teterboro

HAPPY HOWL-A-WEEN!

Let your pet join in on the fun of Halloween costume parades Sat., Oct. 26 at the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center in Teterboro.

From 1 to 3 p.m., the shelter will hold a “Magical Pets on Parade,” a costume event and adoption event.

Bring your pets dressed in costume and compete to win the title of funniest, most original and scariest. There will be treats for humans and animals alike.

From 3 to 5 p.m., the shelter will be open for adoptions. Kittens, specifically, are available for adoption (2 for $50).

The shelter is located at 100 United Lane.

Dogs with homes, dogs that roam: Give a gift that “benefits” this holiday season

High Hopes is now selling its all natural dog treats.

Their products include a heart-shaped peanut butter and blueberry cookie and oven-baked cookies made with bacon, egg, and cheese.

This organization donates 3.5% from every sale to the High Hopes for Pets Foundation, an organization that donates to local shelters and rescue groups.

Pet Life Radio has signed on with iHeartRadio.

Beginning today (Thu., Oct. 17), its live broadcast will be available under iHeartRadio’s Live Stations section as well as available on demand under the service’s new iHeartRadio Talk feature.

Animal Planet to release books based on their “Too Cute!” show Oct. 29

On Tue., Oct. 29, cable network’s Animal Planet will release two books based off their hit series “Too Cute!”

The hardcovers, titled “Too Cute Puppies” and “Too Cute Kittens,” will sell for $12.95.

The books are overviews of several breeds. Each page in the books give a name and a description and a factoid about a particular breed.

Coming Home Rescue to host 3rd Annual Halloween Dog Party in Rockaway

The non-profit dog rescue organization “Coming Home Rescue” will hold its 3rd Annual Halloween Party and Costume Parade at Pawsitive Experience in Rockaway. The event will start at 11 a.m. and run until 2 p.m.

The day will include: tarot card readings for pets and their owners, 50/50’s, a Frosty Pooch Ice Cream Truck and an agility area. A costume parade will start at noon and prizes will be awarded. All proceeds benefit the rescue.

Admission is $5.

Pawsitive Experience is at 114 Beach St.

Pet Savers and Joa’s Arc to host dining fundraiser in Audubon on Wed., Oct. 16

A dining fundraiser — to recognize National Feral Cat Day — will take place at Applebee’s in Audubon Wed., Oct. 16.

National Feral Cat Day, a nationwide event created to promote the protection and human treatment of cats. The proceeds of the event will go to low-cost spay and neutering programs in Gloucester County.

The event is being co-hosted by Pet Savers (a non-profit organization dedicated to improve the lives of companion animals) and Joa’s Arc (rescue program to assist special-needs shelter animals in southern New Jersey).

Diners must present a flyer at the restaurant for the donation to be processed. The flyers can be found at www.petsaversnj.org.

The Applebee’s is located at 601 W. Nicholson Road.

Entertainment personality Billy Bush has stepped out of his comfort zone.

Bush recently took time out from walking the red carpet (his day job) to help the World Wildlife Fund fight the illegal poaching of greater one-horned rhinos in Nepal.

Roll over Beethoven: Music to calm you dog

WNYC Radio’s “Soundcheck” posed the question recently — can music help a dog in distress?

The program recently asked NYC Animal Care & Control behavior supervisor, Jennifer Abrams, about why the organization recently started piping music into their shelters — and they talk with veterinarian Dr. Pamela Fisher, who started the “Rescue Animal MP3 Project,” which sends MP3 players loaded with specially designed calming music to shelters like New York City’s.

Plus, they talked with sound researcher and music producer Joshua Leeds, who produces the commercially available “Through A Dog’s Ear” music therapy program. He explains what dogs actually hear, and what exactly it is about music that can calm dogs, and why more scientific research is needed in the animal music therapy field.

Metro Basset Hound Club to hold Metro Howl-O-Ween Basset Bash on Sun., Oct. 20

What’s better than a Basset hound in a sheriff costume?

The Metro Basset Hound Club will present their 17th Annual Metro Howl-O-Ween Basset Bash on Sun., Oct. 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Van Saun Park (Pavilion F) in Paramus.

The festivities will include food, treats for hounds (finally trick-or-treating for dogs!) and contests – including longtime favorites “longest ears” and “best costume”.

Started in 1997 with 67 hounds — this canine Halloween party benefits homeless, abused, and injured basset hounds.

The park is at 216 Forest Ave.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.

“Carnivale of the Dogs” to be hosted in Ridgewood 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sun., Oct. 13

carnivale“Carnivale of the Dogs,” a TD Bank sponsored event that will benefit the Companion Animal Advocates, will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sun., Oct. 13 at the Wild Duck Pond Park in Ridgewood.

The day will include give-a-ways, foods, pet psychic readings, a doggie salon, pet caricaturists and various dog related exhibitors.

The free event will happen rain or shine.

The park is at E. Ridgewood Avenue.
