Market For Kandinsky
The artwork of 20th-century painter Wassily Kandinsky is a staple of the Guggenheim’s permanent collection. The exhibition currently on view, Kandinsky in Paris, 1934–1944, highlights works from the final decade of the artist’s life. Kandinsky’s success extends beyond the walls of the museum into the auction world.

Time For Frieze Week
This week, we’re out and about in London browsing the numerous art fairs, exhibitions, and events that make up Frieze Week, where a staggering $2 Billion worth of art is on sale.
The week starts off with Frieze Masters, which opens its second edition for VIPs today. Expect to see works ranging from Pieter Brueghel the Younger to Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder at the fair, exhibited by 130 international galleries.
Wednesday marks the highly anticipated VIP opening of Frieze London, with 152 galleries showing the very best of their collections, attracting billionaires from around the world to London’s Regents Park. Don’t miss Oscar Murillo at David Zwirner Gallery, the artist is being hailed as the new Basquiat.

Texas Contemporary
We spent the weekend touring the much-anticipated, third installment of the Texas Contemporary Art Fair, in Houston, TX. The fair showcased Contemporary artwork from 70 galleries, including major New York City galleries such as P.P.O.W and Fredericks & Freiser.
Texas Contemporary is curated by artMRKT Production, a company devoted to broadening art market prospects for both dealers and collectors, and more commonly known for organizing artMRKT Hamptons, artMRKT San Francisco, and Miami Project. We would be remiss not to mention this year’s sophisticated and sustainable VIP Lounge designed by MaRS, Houston’s own award-winning architectural design studio.

Banksy In Central Park
The elusive street artist Banksy set up shop in Central Park over the weekend, selling original artwork for $60 each, with an elderly man working the pop-up stall at the edge of the park on Fifth Ave. Most people strolled by without taking a second look and, according to Banksy, it took about 4 hours for the first sale to be made, but only after a 50% discount was negotiated.
Considering that his work has been auctioned worldwide for hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past, this latest move by the artist is unexpected and quite ironic.

Bacon’s Freud
A painting by Francis Bacon of his friend and fellow artist Lucian Freud may sell for at least $95 million when it is auctioned for the first time in New York next month.
Consigned by an unidentified European collector, Bacon’s 1969 “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” is the most highly valued work in Christie’s highly anticipated sale of Postwar and Contemporary Art on Nov. 12, 2013.
Francis Outred, head of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie’s said Three Studies of Lucian Freud “is an undeniable icon of 20th Century art and a painting that Bacon preserved as one of his favorites,” adding that “It marks Bacon and Freud’s relationship, paying tribute to the creative and emotional kinship between the two artists.”
It would also be a record for the artist if it sells for the estimate of $95 Million.

Robert Indiana
Robert Indiana is the most famous living Pop artist. At 85 years old, he is enjoying a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, which opened in late September.
In the 1960s, the artist’s LOVE image became a symbol for the "make love not war" counterculture movement. However, in the past 45 years, the LOVE symbol has transcended its original meaning to have even greater importance as a global signifier.
The Book of Love portfolio [pictured] is the largest graphic oeuvre ever created by the artist, with 12 individually signed LOVE screenprints, as well as 12 individually signed poems written by the artist himself.

All About Love
In September, the Whitney Museum of American Art opened the first United States retrospective for artist Robert Indiana entitled Beyond Love, examining the 85-year-old artist’s paintings and sculptures not associated with his most well-known image, Love. The 1964 graphic, spelling out the word “LOVE” in block typeface, was first linked to the anti-war era.
While the Whitney exhibition is garnering critical acclaim for uncovering the artist’s darker, more psychologically complex assemblages, the auction world is still in love with Love, more specifically, the painted aluminum sculptures created in the 1990s. These may have sullied the artist’s reputation, but they have certainly not hurt him commercially, and indeed, they continue to make up a large part of his success at auction.
