Fracking health survey finds air pollution may be bigger threat than water contamination

A project studying the health impact of natural gas drilling has found that air pollution may be a bigger concern for nearby residents than water contamination, the Associated Press reports.

The Southwest Pennsylvania Environmental Health Project has been studying residents in a county near Pittsburgh where natural gas drilling has been heavy, with many fracking wells and processing plants, the AP reported. The survey found "an array of symptoms" in 27 cases of people who believed nearby wells or processing plants were the cause, toxicologist David Brown told the news service, with air pollution from the processing plants seeming to cause more problems.

The industry pointed out, though, that switching to natural gas is overall better for air quality than burning coal for power.
