Opening This Week - October 4

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Sci-Fi | Thriller

Metascore: 96/100 (10 reviews)
A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.
Director:

The Buzz: A who's who of actresses were attached or considered for this leading role. Angelina Jolie was set to star -- on two separate occasions -- and then it was Natalie Portman's next big project in the post-Black Swan/pre-pregnancy days. Ultimately, it will serve as Sandra Bullock's first science fiction role, and her fanbase should swell even more under the direction of treasured director Alfonso Cuarón, who somehow hasn't directed a project since the absolutely perfect Children of Men. It's been widely noted that Clooney's screen time will be minimal, but pivotal (clearly).

Certificate R   -   Crime | Drama | Thriller

Metascore: 32/100 (4 reviews)
When a poor college student who cracks an online poker game goes bust, he arranges a face-to-face with the man he thinks cheated him, a sly offshore entrepreneur.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Ben Affleck has entrusted his acting-but-not-directing career to the right people: first up was Terrence Malick in To the Wonder, and now he stars in Brad Furman's follow-up to sleeper hit The Lincoln Lawyer. Could also be a boon for Justin Timberlake's acting career, which has hit the skids somewhat.

Certificate PG   -   Comedy | Romance

After a night of drinking, Rachel, a diplomat working in Mexico City finds her world turned upside down after she's saved by Alejandro, a Mariachi singer whose visa was rejected the day before - by Rachel.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Right now, the movie industry's eyes are on Pantelion Films, the Latino-focused studio that has a distribution deal with Lionsgate and whose recent release, Instructions Not Included, has become one of the most successful foreign-language hits ever. We're interested to see how this crossover romantic comedy performs in comparison. Co-star Laura Ramsey will also be seen in You Are Here, "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner's feature-film debut.

Certificate Not Rated   -   Comedy | Romance

Babli (Ranbir Kapoor) is a street smart car mechanic living in a Delhi orphanage. He is charming and lives life to the fullest. He also steals cars to support his orphanage. He has no sense of right or wrong till he unwittingly hurts the love of his life, Tara (Pallavi Sharda) and is chased by cop couple Chulbul Chautala (Rishi Kapoor) and Bulbul Chautala (Neetu Kapoor). Babli realizes that there is no right way of doing the wrong thing. Babli sets out to fix all the wrongs in his life and he continues to be shameless about it.

The Buzz: Filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap's follow-up to Dabangg sets a new record as the widest opening ever for a Bollywood film in North America. It's been a big international year for star Ranbir Kapoor, who just had a hit with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Certificate PG   -   Drama | Music

Grace Trey is the ideal Christian teen who is also a phenomenal singer. But at the tender age of eighteen, after she gets the music break of a lifetime and is thrust into the "real world" - her faith is put to the test.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Director Brad Silverman's coming-of-age story could be a strong performer in limited release thanks to star AJ Michalka's legion of fans, the Faith-based audience at large, and a heavy TV-focused ad campaign. We're still wondering if her planned TV project with sister Aly -- which is backed by Adam Sandler's production company -- will ever be made.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Metascore: 54/100 (4 reviews)
A grown man caught in the crossfire of his parents 15-year divorce discovers he was unknowingly part of a study on divorced children and is enlisted in a follow-up years later, which wreaks new havoc on his family.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: It would probably work the best to watch this talky-therapy comedy in the same manner as you enjoy Adam Scott on "Parks and Recreation"; from the comfort of your home, you can watch Scott and Amy Poehler repel one another, or put yourself in his shoes as he makes out with a tattooed Jessica Alba. There are many ways to distract yourself from the notion that the script just isn't that good.

Certificate R   -   Drama

After a blow to the head, Abby decides she can't do it anymore. Her life just can't be only about the house, the kids and the wife. She needs more: she needs to be Eleanor.
Director:

The Buzz: Writer/director Stacie Passon was mentored here by Rose Troche of "L Word"/Go Fish indie fame, and their collaboration earned creative and technical accolades on the festival circuit for its frank depiction of a queer married woman's sexuality that satisfies its audiences desire for thoughtful and honest emotions, and super-hot sex scenes.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama

Metascore: 37/100 (6 reviews)
A recounting of the chaotic events that occurred at Dallas' Parkland Hospital on the day U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Former New York Times reporter Peter Landesman has a handful of film projects in the works, and his docudrama on JFK's assassination wasn't immediately welcomed (at Venice) though it has been embraced (and reworked, we think) a bit more closely in North America, as the critics were much less harsh at the Toronto International Film Festival recently. We hear the opening scenes, as Kennedy is brought into the Parkland hospital, are a bit tough to watch.

Certificate PG   -   Documentary

The life story of basketball sensation, Jeremy Lin.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The open secret to the Sundance's success is in the festival's documentary programming, which is absolutely more reliable than its annual feature-film rosters. Director Evan Leong's work here has been praised for its heart (no surprise) and its capturing of a phenomenon as it is happening. Similar to the wonderful The Other Dream Team, you need not be a sports enthusiast to be hooked in.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 46/100 (4 reviews)
While out on parole, Dennis reluctantly takes a job selling Christmas trees with his old buddy Rene in order to make enough money to buy his estranged daughter the piano she's always wanted.
Director:

The Buzz: Phil Morrison has a compact, impressive resume; aside from his breakout directorial debut, Junebug, he's produced two projects for Kelly Reichardt, worked on the canceled-too-soon series Enlightened, and directed some of the Upright Citizens Brigade's TV show. Here he's working with a script by one of the writers from The Americans, so there's some definite promise for a nuanced take on the holiday comedy. In the trailer, however, neither Paul (Rudd or Giamatti) makes us laugh one bit. (Better is Sally Hawkins's Russian accent.)

  -   Documentary | Drama | History | Thriller

On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia police dropped two pounds of military explosives onto a city row house occupied by the radical group MOVE. The resulting fire was not fought for over an hour although firefighters were on the scene with water cannons in place. Five children and six adults were killed and sixty-one homes were destroyed by the six-alarm blaze, one of the largest in the city's history. This dramatic tragedy unfolds through an extraordinary visual record previously withheld from the public. It is a graphic illustration of how prejudice, intolerance and fear can lead to unthinkable acts of violence.
Director:

The Buzz: New York-based indie Zeitgeist Films knows how to promote a political documentary, and this look at an under-reported event from the Reagan Era seems to be registering with people on Facebook and elsewhere.

- [Limited]

Certificate R   -   Documentary

The story of the deadliest day on the world's most dangerous mountain, when 11 climbers mysteriously perished on K2.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The Imposter proved that you can re-create historical events for a documentary with mesmerizing effects, so we're intrigued to see how it works for director Nick Ryan as he investigates the fates of the 11 hikers lost at the summit of K2.

- [Limited]

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Horror

A horror comedy centered on a guy who learns that his unusual stomach problems are being caused by a demon living in his intestines.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Jacob Vaughn has been in the indie-film world for a while, directing his own shorts and features, working on Duplass brothers sets, editin' stuff.... And now he's created what we hope is a loving, potent, and totally ill tribute to filmmakers such as Frank Henenlotter (Basket Case/Brain Damage).
