Wallington seniors to ‘dance for cure’

A group of Wallington senior citizens plan to dance their way to a cure for cancer as part of a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.

Their sixth-annual “Dance for a Cure” will take place on Friday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. at Bergen County’s senior activity center at 24 Union Boulevard in Wallington. Continue reading

Hogan gets ‘taxpayer advocate’ award

The Bergen County Freeholders have awarded their Taxpayer Award for October to County Clerk John Hogan, for keeping a campaign promise to cut ballot printing bills by a competitive process.

Freeholder John Mitchell, a Republican freeholder who created the award last year, presented it to Hogan, the first Democrat elected County Clerk in 23 years, during Wednesday’s freeholder meeting.

Mitchell credited Hogan for saving a cumulative $400,000 in printing costs thus far. Continue reading

Where to hear the county candidate debates

Debate season for county wide races gets underway tonight when Bergen Grassroots holds a 7:30 p.m. candidate forum at the Society for Ethical Culture at 687 Larch Avenue in Teaneck.

It appears that only one of the three Republican incumbents, Maura DeNicola, will be there tonight.

The Bergen County Police Chiefs Association opposed an attempt last year to merge the County Police into the Sheriff’s Office and it does not appear the latest merger plan will fare any differently.

The Association’s current president, Cliffside Park Police Chief Donald Keane said Tuesday that while the latest plan offered by the four Democratic freeholders has some improvements – namely no layoffs – the chiefs still have problems with the overall plan.

Freeholders, League to discuss ballot question on NJ minimum wage hike

The Bergen County freeholders have a pretty busy agenda for Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. meeting with a police merger proposal and veto override slated for a vote.

On top of that, the board also will be voting on a resolution that urges county residents to support raising the New Jersey minimum wage.
