Football: Westwood 39, River Dell 19

WASHINGTON TWP. – Senior QB Craig Carmilani threw for 240 yards and five TDs and ran for a score to lead Westwood to a 39-19 win tonight over River Dell in Big North Patriot Division football.

Carmilani completed eight of 11 passes, and junior receiver Nolan Borgersen caught five passes for 187 yards, including four scores, to help Westwood (4-0) snap a six-game losing streak against River Dell (1-3).

Borgersen caught a 69-yard TD in the first quarter, a 59-yarder in the second, a 23-yard in the third, and a 24-yarder in the fourth to help Westwood amass 370 total yards.

Volleyball: Big North, NJIC standings

The Big North resumes divisional girls’ volleyball action today and a key battle is Fair Lawn, ranked 13th in The Record’s North Jersey Top 15, hosting No. 12 Wayne Valley.

In the race for the Big North Independence Division title, Wayne Valley holds a one-game lead over Fair Lawn, thanks to last month’s 25-20, 25-20 win over the defending champion.

Wayne Valley (7-2 overall, 4-0 Independence) is riding a two-game losing streak, though, while Fair Lawn (11-4, 3-1) has won eight of nine since the loss to the Indians.

Below are standings for the Big North and NJIC:

Boys Soccer: Desperation makes good theater as Bergenfield edges Ridgewood 3-2 in overtime

So where do I start with Thursday night’s double-overtime thriller between Bergenfield and Ridgewood?

Do I start with Walter Nolasco’s rebound of his own penalty kick for the tying goal for Bergenfield?

How about Bryan Blandon’s rip from 20 yards out with time running down in the second overtime for the game-winner in a 3-2 victory for Bergenfield?

Joe Ricciardi’s unbelievable saves for Ridgewood or Sergio Mejia’s that kept Bergenfield in the game?

There was even a ball cleared off the line in front of an empty net by Ridgewood’s Kengo Kawahara.

With a lot riding on the outcome, these two teams put forth a never-say-die effort few have seen outside a one-and-done tournament setting.

Football: Senior QB Wallerstein’s development vital to Lakeland’s success

WANAQUE — Adam Wallerstein wasn’t able to establish himself as Lakeland’s starting quarterback before his junior season.

He had a strong arm and plenty of potential, but Lakeland’s coaches felt more comfortable with senior Cory Caddell running the Lancers’ offense. Turning to Caddell, a converted receiver, worked out well for Lakeland, which went 9-2 and nearly upset Ramapo on the road in the North 1, Group 3 semifinals. Continue reading

Girls soccer: BCT Schedule

Northern Highlands, winners of 56 straight games, earned the top seed in the Bergen County girls soccer tournament at the seeding meeting Thursday night. The two-time defending champions, who are now just four victories shy of tying the state record for consecutive wins, currently held by Ramapo, has a bye in the first round, which begins Sunday.

Undefeated Immaculate Heart (9-0) earned the second seed and also has a bye in the first round. The Blue Eagles lost to Northern Highlands in the final last year, 3-1, and is the last team to win the tournament before the Highlanders, claiming four straight titles from 2007-10.

Ramapo, which has won at least a share of the title a record 12 times, was seeded third and faces No. 30 Cresskill in the first round. It is seeking its first tournament championship since 2003, its longest drought without winning since the tournament began in 1981.

Ridgewood was a surprise choice at No. 4, edging No. 5 Ramsey and No. 6 Pascack Hills before the honors. The Maroons are coming off a losing season. But it’s only losses this year are to NorthernHighlands, 1-0, and Ramapo. It faces No. 29 Queen of Peace.

Surely, you saw me ask by now, but I received information from almost 20 schools (and one club softball team) with their plans for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This truly is a worthwhile cause, and I encourage you to take part in whatever way you can.

Here is the list of events I was able to compile for this month. It’s not too late, if you want to be a part of the listing, send me a quick email.

Volleyball: Bogota, IHA at weekend Garden State Challenge

All-State senior hitter Carly O’Sullivan and Bogota defend their title at the 6th annual Garden State Challenge on Saturday and Sunday at Fairleigh Dickinson’s Rothman Center in Hackensack.

Bogota is the only New Jersey team to win the prestigious GSC, capturing last year’s title at Ramapo College with a win over Ward Melville of New York, 25-14, 22-25, 25-15.

Bogota, ranked No. 2 in both The Record’s North Jersey Top 15 and State Top 10, is one of three locals in the 15-team field. Host Immaculate Heart, No. 1 in both Record rankings, is joined by Secaucus

Action opens 9 a.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and the best-of-three championships for the Gold and Silver brackets are expected to start late Sunday afternoon.

Pool-play brackets:

Football: Games to watch for Week 5

Here are some intriguing games scheduled for Week 5 this weekend (rankings refer to The Record Top 25):

No. 17 Pascack Valley (2-1) at No. 3 DePaul (2-1), Friday, 6 p.m.: DePaul lost to all four Bergen County parochial powers last season, but the Spartans’ 33-28 loss to Pascack Valley was the loss that really kept them out of the Non-Public, Group 3 playoffs. They’ll look to avenge that defeat and build on the momentum they established Friday, when they upset Don Bosco, 35-25, on the road. Continue reading

Girls Soccer Report: IHA nipping at Northern Highlands’ heels

Immaculate Heart players celebrating team's third goal Tuesday against Ramapo.

Immaculate Heart has had plenty to celebrate this year, including a goal against Ramapo last night.

I’m going to start this week with a game that is fresh in everyone’s mind: IHA 3, Ramapo 0.

There was a lot I took away from that game. 1) Ramapo is going to be a hard out later in the year. 2) Senior midfielder Caroline Chagares is  starting to assert herself in big games. 3) If Ramapo can do more of the little things right, it’s going to score against the likes of IHA and not give up as many goals. 4) IHA’s goalie Taylor Lupi is legit. 5) IHA has as much depth as anyone I’ve seen this year. 6) IHA’s passing ability has teams playing catch up early in games.

But the biggest thing I took away from IHA 3, Ramapo 0 is this: When IHA plays its game — possess, get a couple short passes in tight spaces, open up the defense — it’s as dangerous as any team in the state.  Continue reading

BOYS SOCCER: Qualifying for the Bergen County Tournament

The cutoff date and seeding meeting for the Bergen County boys soccer tournament is looming on Monday.

Teams with a .650 winning percentage receive an automatic bid into the tournament.

Teams who are at least ONE GAME above .500 will be considered by the seeding committee for possible entry into the tournament.

I mistakenly wrote in my boys soccer notebook in Wednesday’s paper that teams with a .500 record will be considered.

Teams in fact must be at least one game above .500 to be considered for the tournament.

BOYS SOCCER: Bears in the hunt

The Bergenfield boys soccer team enjoyed a dream season last year. The Bears won their division title for the first time and reached the quarterfinals of the Bergen County and state sectional tournaments.

That dream took a big hit this season with an 0-3 start and some high-level competition still waiting on the horizon.

But that competition turned out to be just what Bergenfield ordered.

A stunning victory over previously unbeaten Ramapo Saturday, the first in the program’s history, and Tuesday’s scoreless tie against Northern Highlands has put the Bears back into possible consideration for a berth in the Bergen County tournament and set people talking in North Jersey.

Free Kicks: Wayne Hills Girls Keep Rollin’, Down DePaul, 2-0

HIGH FIVE: After its 2-0 win over DePaul Tuesday night, Wayne Hills has won five straight games after an opening day loss to Fair Lawn.

FIVE STRAIGHT: After its 2-0 win over DePaul Tuesday night, Wayne Hills has won five straight games after an opening day loss to Fair Lawn.

Wayne Hills knew what was at stake Tuesday night, and the Patriots certainly played like it. It was a chance for Wayne Hills to “deliver a message to Passaic County,” as coach Greg Rehberger told his team in the pregame huddle, and the Patriots responded with a well-deserved and message-sending 2-0 win over DePaul, cooling off the Spartans, who had become somewhat of the talk of the county after their upset overtime win over Clifton last week.

Most of Wayne Hills was in attendance for that one, getting them even more energized and excited for Tuesday night. After having a goal called back midway through the first half (off a ripped shot from Meghan Griffin), the Patriots seized control of the game in the closing minutes of the half. Sam Rodriguez, who now has seven goals in her last three games, struck first with 2:30 to go, creating a shooting lane in the box with a beautiful move after receiving a pass from Griffin. Just seconds later, freshman Cameron Santers, who entered the game off the bench, knocked one in on a perfectly-executed corner kick from Brooke Adamchak. What was a scoreless game for nearly 40 minutes became a 2-0 game in a matter of about 30 seconds. Santers’ goal was a dagger just before halftime.

For more on the game, click Continue Reading. I wish there was more in the paper, but space is getting tighter and tighter these days.
