Perspectives The commercial utilisation of genetically modified chick peas cannot be expected in the near future.

Cultivation

Chick peas are cultivated worldwide in subtropical climate regions. In 2005, global production amounted to approximately nine million tonnes, two thirds of which was harvested in India. Other producers include Pakistan, Turkey, North Africa and Mexico.

Utilisation

Chick peas are consumed in many forms:

  • soaked and cooked as purée
  • roasted as a coffee substitute
  • as flour for baked goods (often in combination with wheat flour)
  • as a snack
  • in Spain, boiled or roasted chick peas are the basis of the national dish known as garbanzos
  • in India, the young plants are eaten raw as salad or cooked in a manner similar to spinach.

Chick peas also are used as a feed plant.
