GM Crop Production
Countries Growing GMOs |
The world’s leading producers of GM crops are the
United States,
Argentina,
Brazil,
Canada, India and China. In 2006, GM crop production also reached noteworthy levels in Paraguay,
South Africa, Uruguay and
Australia. In the EU, GM crops have remained uncommon. Appreciable GM maize production in the EU only took place
in Spain on an area of nearly 60,000 hectares.
In
Portugal,
Germany,
France and the Czech Republic,
transgenic crops were primarily grown for small-scale field trials.
In 2005, Iran and the
Czech
Republic were added to the list of countries commercially growing transgenic crops. As of 2006,
38 percent of GM crops are grown in developing countries.
