Heather on Style

(201) Magazine fashion editor Heather Zwain with updates on the fashion scene around northern New Jersey

B Brian Atwood Heels

Hi fashionistas!

Like most of you…ok ALL of you, I love shoes, especially heels! I swoon over the latest and greatest designers newest collections every time I walk past those beautiful and very expensive heels. Most of the time I can control my temptation to pay a lot of $$$$ on these stunners, but every once and a while, a special pair catches my eye and practically begs me to buy them…and I cave in!

For the most part, I look for deals when it comes to shopping, especially for footwear, which usually isn’t comfortable anyway:(

Recently I have been buying heels online (check out Heather’s Haul-shoedazzle.com on Bergen.com)

I am really excited about my latest purchase…which brings me to the topic of this post.

I have been a big fan of Brian Atwood’s B Brian Atwood line since it came on the scene. In fact one of my all-time favorite pair of heels is B Brian Atwood. Not only are they gorgeous and versatile, but comfortable (for up to five hours…but who’s counting?!?)

20130130-210313.jpg

20130130-210344.jpg

20130130-210424.jpg

They’re so worn-yikes!!! I truly love them!!! Told you I wear them! Unlike some of my other beauties which sit on display in my “closet room.” (See my blog about my “closet room.”)

I was looking at Brian Atwood’s website a few nights ago and went straight to the sale section. (Def recommend this, especially when trying to save money!)

I found these two beauties that I ordered right away!

20130130-211143.jpg

Love them!!! Don’t they remind you of ballet slippers in a strange way?!

They arrived last night (such a great ending to a long day!) The heel height is very high, but believe it or not, they are pretty comfortable (well, I only wore them for about two minutes standing still:)…so I will check back in after I wear them out!) Either way, they are a pale pink/nude satin and so beautiful. I def don’t have anything else like them! So excited!

The second pair caught my eye immediately!!! I am a HUGE fan of booties and fur (I mostly wear faux, but once and a while cave in and buy real, I’m sorry:( trust me, although it sounds hypocritical, I am a huge animal lover.)

How hot are these?!? Totally my style!!! Can’t wait to wear them!!!

20130130-211706.jpg

I highly recommend you check out B Brian Atwood heels for style, design and comfort to complete your favorite outfits! Make sure to let me know what you think after you do!

Look great. Feel great.

Golden Globes Fashion: Hits & Misses

It’s always exciting to see what fashions will be chosen by actors and actresses as they hit the Golden Globes red carpet.

Below are my favorites: Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Richie and Kate Hudson.

20130114-123459.jpg

All of the ladies above look classic, elegant and confident. Not only do their dresses work, but so do their accessories, hair and makeup.

I don’t know about you, but I am sooo over seeing the thigh-high slits and silly “Angelina Jolie pose” these ladies below are rocking. So unoriginal and overdone!

They missed the mark!

20130114-123641.jpg

And why are people making such a fuss about JLo’s look? Unless she’s about to lace up her skates and do a triple axel, this lace Zuhair Murad dress does nothing for me.

20130114-124002.jpg

Who were your hits & misses?

Trends from last night:

1. Old Hollywood hair, especially soft waves to the side
2. Colorful dresses, coral in particular
3. Plunging & key-hole necklines
4. Mermaid-style dresses
5. Burgundy lips
6. Beige smoky eyes
7. Lace dresses
8. Black dresses

Look great. Feel great.

RHONJ event

This past Friday I attended an event at Space in Englewood, hosted by Elvira Grau and Jennifer Dalton. All donations went to aid in the Hurricane relief.

In attendance were many familiar faces from the cast of RHONJ including Kathy and Rich Wakile, Melissa and Joe Gorga, Teresa Giudice, Lauren Manzo and Chris Manzo, and Kim D. Following their every move were camera crews of course!

Although most of the crowd sparkled in rhinestones and sequins, I opted for a plain black and white color blocked Narciso Rodriguez dress from Kohl’s. I love the simplicity of the dress, the long-sleeves and the longer length. For $33 (on sale) you can’t beat it! The entire back of the dress is solid black, which I love.

To keep the look sleek, I wore black pointy-toe patent pumps, instead of adding a pop-of-color. I wanted to keep the look streamlined and simple. Matching it up with a gold studded Rebecca Minkoff clutch gave my ensemble a little edge and tied in the gold zipper on the back of my heels.

I chose not to wear tights only because the dress is pretty long and tights would have chopped up the look too much. Usually I always wear some sort of opaque tights in the winter. Over me, I wore a black faux fur short coat. A long coat would’ve weighed down the look.

The only jewelry I wore was two black bow rings which I stacked on top of one another, and a Chanel ring. Simple and sleek. And sometimes, that’s all your outfit needs to be.

If the event was dressier, I would’ve pulled my hair to the side and added a pop-of-color with a bold red lip.

There’s always more than one way to wear an outfit:)

Don’t forget to check out Kohl’s for great deals and Heather’s Haul from last week where I show you all of my Kohl’s purchases.

Look great. Feel great.

A Look Inside My Closet Room

When shopping for my first home, I knew that a second bedroom was a must.

See, for me, I run out of closet space wherever I am. I took up almost every closet in my parent’s house….and pretty much, still do…even though I moved out:)

I knew that the closet space wasn’t enough in my home so I opted to turn my second bedroom into a “closet/boutique.” It’s a place for me to get ready every morning and display some of my most favorite treasures. Although a lot of my faves are stored behind closed doors, I still love having a lot of pieces showcased around this room so I don’t forget what I have.

My wish is to one day have a HUGE room dedicated to all of my clothing, jackets, shoes, accessories, handbags, etc.

Since I couldn’t display everything, (clutter makes me nuts), I had to come up with clever ways to stay organized, presentable and liveable.

I hope you like this first glimpse into one of my favorite spaces. I have mixed feelings on showcasing to the world personal pieces & my home for many reasons, but I thought you fashionistas would enjoy it and appreciate a space I am proud of and love so much:)

I still have finishing touches to do (dress up the curtains, find the perfect round tufted ottoman and have my chandelier installed.)

I hope you enjoy my closet room as much as I do and get some fashionable and organizational inspiration and tips!

20121127-220815.jpg

Welcome!

20121127-220903.jpg

My dresser which houses many goodies and displays many others. Note the framed vintage Barbie photos. Growing up I LOVED everything Barbie! I still get a kick out of the Barbie section in FAO in the city. I also am quite the girly girl and kid at heart. I took these Barbie pics from a calendar I was no longer using, purchased frames from Michaels and wa-la! Home-made art:)

20121127-221200.jpg

Oversized sunnies are a must-have in my life! I mostly buy and wear Tom Fords.

The white elephant box and green/navy tray are from C.Wonder. Elephants with turned-up trunks are known to be good luck:)

20121127-221437.jpg

Some of my favorite perfumes. I love displaying them on mirrored trays.

20121127-221520.jpg

More of my favorite scents and a special photo. I love pictures and frame ones that remind me of great moments and memories. One of my favorite photos of my mom, sister and me from my sister’s bridal shower.

20121127-221639.jpg

A very special personalized jewelry box from my sister as one of her presents to me for being her Maid-of-Honor. The saying on the top holds special meaning to the two of us. “There ain’t no mountain high enough.”

20121127-221831.jpg

My statement necklace wall.

20121127-224224.jpg

These beautiful earrings were one of the gifts my sister gave all of her bridesmaids to wear on her wedding day<3

20121127-224347.jpg

My hamsa and evil eye collection displayed on a pretty silver mercury bud vase.

20121127-224612.jpg

My great-grandmother’s necklace:)

20121127-224713.jpg

One of my favorite statement necklaces. It’s either from J.Crew or Banana Republic-I can’t remember.

20121127-224844.jpg

Close-up of the “shadow-box” frame holding my sparkly Jimmy Choos and two statement clutches.

20121127-225030.jpg

I love this mermaid hook. It was hand-painted for me and purchased in a small shop in Rhode Island.

My necklace wall-a great way to store necklaces. The silver hooks are from Ikea. The shadow-box frame holding the sparkly Jimmy Choos are usually my friends favorite feature of the room. I’ve never worn them, so why not display this pretty pair?:) The mirrored console half-moon table was a gift from a friend:) I like displaying certain jewelry pieces in different vintage-looking glass boxes and small trays. My hanging earrings are kept organized by hanging them on the round holder (above). I think I purchased the earring holder, bracelet holder, glass box and mirrored round tray from Urban Outfitters. I keep organized by keeping the same type of items together.

20121127-222503.jpg

The shoe closet my dad built me:) To keep the “boutique” feel I am going for, we took the doors off. A lot of my shoes are hidden, but the only way they fit is by storing them two rows deep.

20121127-222643.jpg

Another organizing tip: keep peep-toes together, pointy-toe heels together, round-toe pumps, booties, boots, sneakers, etc…this way, you know where to find them and they look pretty at the same time:)

20121127-222813.jpg

More shoes…

20121127-222835.jpg

Love these crystal-covered booties from Nordstrom! A great find and a wonderful way to dress up an outfit.

20121127-222913.jpg

Some of my sneakers and Uggs. I like to color coordinate EVERYTHING!

20121127-222952.jpg

Fun fur peep-toe booties!

20121127-223022.jpg

These Prada jeweled sandals wouldn’t let me leave Neiman Marcus without buying them a few years ago. They were a lot more money then I usually spend on shoes, but so pretty and special, I had to have them.

20121127-223155.jpg

My favorites!!! These are the Dior “Extreme” gladiators Carrie wore with her wedding dress in the first Sex & the City movie. I have worn them so much that they look beat up:( And I love them so much, that I had an artist draw a picture of them which I framed and hung in my dining room. (See below)

20121127-223458.jpg

A GREAT gift for a fashionista and a definite showpiece in my home. I highly recommend Mark Schwartz to turn your favorite shoes into a beautiful work of art! Tell him I sent you!

20121127-223809.jpg

My handbag wall. Color-coded and “merchandised” by style of course:) Hey, this is supposed to look like a boutique after all!

20121127-225153.jpg

A few of my favorite bags. The feather clutch in the back is from Nordstrom a couple of years ago and definitely a statement piece! The vintage Chanel is from a store in NYC. The black beaded clutch in the front was my grandmother’s and is very special to me. The coral snakeskin clutch with jeweled clasp is by Clara Kasavina.

20121127-225401.jpg

Hello feathers! So fun and whimsical:)

20121127-225430.jpg

A great way to organize clutches is by placing them in these “mail” holders from the Container Store.

20121127-225529.jpg

Brights with brights!

20121127-225553.jpg

Neutrals with neutrals!

20121127-225638.jpg

I bought this Buddha to bring a sense of calm and peace to the room. It’s from HomeGoods and sits on top of the handbag shelving unit.

20121127-225838.jpg

Missoni for Target suitcase.
(To see more of my Missoni for Target pieces go to Bergen.com, click videos & search Heather’s Haul-Missoni)

20121127-230003.jpg

My mannequin that holds some of my favorite belts and pins.

20121127-230046.jpg

I have a few belts that are exactly the same, just different colors. These Dolce & Gabbana belts are just one example.

20121127-230143.jpg

Feathered-flower pins.

20121127-230215.jpg

I always wanted a vanity and knew I had to have one when I bought my home. I do my makeup here every morning. Tip: place vanity in front of window for natural light. I know it blocks most of the window, but your makeup will come out better…promise:)

20121127-230347.jpg

I love handheld mirrors. They are girly and feel very vintage to me. The small jeweled one was a present from my sister years ago and the one I use when applying mascara daily:)

During my last trip to Rhode Island, I became obsessed with pretty mermaids and had to have both of these. The one that isn’t a mirror is actually a hook that needs to be hung.

20121127-230627.jpg

I bought this decorative bottle from Anthropologie. My family and close friends know how obsessed I am with the 1985 T.V. movie based on Alice in Wonderland, and this bottle reminds me of it.

20121127-230855.jpg

A great way to store makeup brushes is to fill a vase with sand. Your brushes will stand up straight and are easy to take in and out. I also tried decorative crystals, but that didn’t work so well.

20121127-231709.jpg

A picture of my grandma and me from my high school graduation party<3 (in the background).

20121127-231009.jpg

I like to have candles in every room. This Godiva candle was a present from a friend and smells delish!

20121127-231057.jpg

Just like a boutique, I have a clothing rack. This is mainly because I needed more storage! Mostly dresses are hung on this rack.

20121127-231206.jpg

20121127-231313.jpg

Always coordinate your colors. Everything looks neater that way and it’s much easier to locate an item. I usually hang long-sleeves together, sleeveless together, etc.

20121127-231408.jpg

20121127-231614.jpg

I wore this dress to a gala at the MOMA last year. It was a surprising find from Urban Outfitters and one of my favorite with this deep-plunging v-neck back. I love how the front covers me completely and the pleated skirt reminds me of dresses my grandmother wore. Black and white is also my favorite color combo, especially in home decor. It is a very glamorous and understated dress.

20121127-232244.jpg

Another one of my favorite dresses is this Valentino from Neiman Marcus that I bought a couple of months ago. It is so girly, reminds me of dresses I wore as a child, and totally me! I received so many compliments when I wore this dress to Lisa Oz’s house for the Table-to-Table luncheon.

And that’s a sneak peek!

I hope you enjoyed this look around one of my very special spaces. And remember, style comes in all different price points, shapes and styles!

Mirror Pics

So almost every morning I take mirror pics of my “outfit of the day” also known as #ootd to all you instagrammers.

There is a method to my madness and that isn’t to just take pics of myself or to remember what outfits I’ve worn to prevent being a repeat offender:) Although, that is a good idea to help you remember!

I thought it’d be a fun way to describe my outfits and thought process behind them for all you fashionistas.

I’ll start with some that I’ve collected in my phone over time and post more on a regular basis. You can always check out my #ootd on Instagram under HLZ143. I will give as much detail as I remember on where I purchased an item, brand, etc. You’ll see that I’m an equal opportunist and shop at malls, boutiques, high price points and low. I like certain staple pieces that you’ll notice I do repeat (which is completely different than repeating an entire look) :)

Here we go….

20121121-001022.jpg

Topshop cargo coat w/leather sleeves, Nordstrom, Westfield Garden State Plaza
Gap v-neck tee
corduroy leggings, Uniqlo, Westfield Garden State Plaza
Lindsay Phillips leopard flats, Deseos Boutique, Hillsdale
Initial necklace, C.Wonder, Westfield Garden State Plaza
Botkier bag, sample sale years ago!

I felt like being casual and toned down that day, hence the minimal accessories and solid colors. I do love adding a print to an outfit and did that with wearing these flats.

20121121-001904.jpg

Diane Von Furstenberg oversized top, BB Clover, Ho-Ho-Kus
Genetic Denim skinnies, Ginger N’Cream, Westwood
boots, Steve Madden, Westfield Garden State Plaza
Rebecca Minkoff bag, sample sale years ago

I love how oversized this top is! I think it’s very important to wear a balanced outfit and by that I mean choosing either something looser on top, tighter on the bottom, or vice versa. I choose the former obvi:) I juxtaposed this feminine DVF top by wearing combat-type boots. I try to mix masculine and feminine pieces together in almost every outfit I wear.

20121121-002538.jpg

Jacket, Macy’s, Paramus Park Mall
Paisley button-down shirt, J.Crew
Green jeans, C.Wonder, Westfield Garden State Plaza
Aldo pumps,Woodbury Commons (from forever ago!)
Emerald jeweled statement necklace, Lord & Taylor, Fashion Center
Mindy Gold Designs bracelet, mindygold.com
Gold ring, Gypsy Warrior, Ridgewood
Botkier bag

I was feeling very “bright” this day! I was inspired by the green jeans and built my outfit around them. I like to play around with color and prints, even if they don’t match perfectly so I chose this paisley gray, white and mustard shirt. To tie in the shirt and to color-block, I threw on the jacket, which is also a mustard color. I like to mix different shades of similar colors so I added the brown leather Mindy Gold bracelet with turquoise gem. By chance, the buttons on my jacket are brown which tie in the leather bracelet (but I didn’t notice that till later in the day). My pumps have turquoise and lime green in them so they were the obvious choice. I stuck to a black bag because I already had a lot of color going on in my outfit.

20121121-003549.jpg

Capote poncho with fur trim
Gray cashmere long-sleeve top, Century 21, Bergen Town Center
Genetic Denim jeans, Ginger N’ Cream
Black suede boots
Botkier bag

I love wearing monochromatic outfits. This poncho is one of my faves. I think it’s made out of jersey material and it has fur. So comfy, yet a little dressy (bc of the fur) at the same time. Speaking of…I love to mix dressy and casual pieces together.

20121121-003948.jpg

Skulls scarf
Faux-fur vest
Buffalo by David Bitton royal blue long-sleeve turtleneck, Nyack
Shiny leggings, American Apparel, Westfield Garden State Plaza
Michael Kors bag, Bloomingdale’s, The Shops at Riverside
Fingerless gloves that turn into mittens
Gap fur boots (they’re slippers!)

I was going to a friend’s house and wanted to be casual, comfy and warm…(I wasn’t warm!!) I like pairing black and blue together, it’s very chic! And I love faux fur!

20121121-004625.jpg

Hearts blouse, Gypsy Warrior, Ridgewood
Jeweled-waist skirt, Urban Outfitters
Glittery tights
Zara suede color-block pumps
Rebecca Minkoff studded clutch
Wool coat w/leather sleeves, Forever 21, Westfield Garden State Plaza

I was going to my friend’s bridal shower and chose a very girly look. I usually do not condone wearing any type of white to any type of bridal function (when you’re not the bride), but since the blouse is covered in black hearts I thought it was ok:) Since I stuck to a black, white and gray color palette, I added the pumps for the red pop of color. Reminds me of that joke…what’s black and white and red all over? Corny, I know, but that’s what popped in my head! Anyway…the clutch adds an edgy feel bc of the studs and balances out the girliness of the rest of the outfit.

Hope you enjoyed my first “Mirror Pics” post. Keep checking back for more and feel free to comment with any questions, etc.

The Perfect Charger

The other day I was in J. Crew and stumbled across a cute and very practical accessory.

Due to Hurricane Sandy, I didn’t have power for days. This charger is perfect for these type of situations and for times when your phone needs a quick fix.

Just attach the three hour battery life charger to your iPhone and throw it in your bag. The charger comes with a USB cord and is rechargeable through the computer.

This accessory was $40 well spent.

Check out J.Crew for more colors and designs.

My favorite children’s costumes

Happy Halloween! I hope everyone is safe and beginning to recover from Hurricane Sandy.

In light of the devastation from the storm, I wanted to blog about something that is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

As a child, Halloween was always a huge event in my home. My mom and grandmother handmade everyone of mine and my sister’s costumes. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, and I really think it’s due to the special costume traditions I grew up with.

Below you’ll see a few of my costumes from over the years, unfortunately I didn’t have time (due to the storm) to look for the majority of the pictures. Some of my costumes included a strawberry, a bunch of grapes, a watermelon slice (which I wore again a few years ago), an ice cream cone and a joker (playing card).

This year, I decided to go back to my roots and create a homemade costume. Well, in all fairness, my mom and dad made it:) I wanted to be something clever, funny, cute and not store bought. I’m pretty much over seeing girls dressed as a sexy cat, sexy cop, sexy nurse, sexy everything…(you get the point). So…I decided to be a bath pouf:) It was a really cute costume and pretty easy to make. I loved going to the fabric store to buy the materials-definitely brought back a lot of childhood memories! Of course, against his will, I dress my yorkie Rocco up every year. His costumes are always super cute. I’ve included two of my favorites.

I also attached images of some creative and adorable children’s costumes that I found online. I love how creative people can be!

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and safe Halloween.

Just a reminder that trick-or-treating has been postponed to Monday, November 5th.

Look great. Feel great.

As Good as Gold

I have been waiting for a metallic gold nail polish that is super shiny and stands out from the crowd. I finally found just that in Essie’s new Mirror Metallics Collection. The perfect gold color is called “Good As Gold.” This quick-drying nail polish goes on silky smooth and is reflective, bold and the perfect color year round.

Here are my steps to the perfect mani:
1. Base coat-Stickey
2. Two coats of Essie’s “Good As Gold”
3. For a little glitz, put a coat of O.P.I’s “Bring On The Bling” on your ring finger nails
4. Top coat-O.P.I (adds extra shine and drives quickly)

Hope you like it!

Eye of JA—Jewelry Must-Haves!

Hi fashionistas!

I apologize for being on a bit of a blog hiatus.

After meeting an amazing jewelry designer today, I knew her jewelry would be the perfect way to get myself back in the blogging universe.  Not only did I feel this way because she is talented and has a killer jewelry line, but because she is mature, personable and wise beyond her years. The passion she exudes is inspirational, refreshing and definitely something I relate to.

Janna Appelstein, founder, owner and designer of Eye of JA jewelry is enthusiastic, artistic and extremely passionate. She has an “eye” for fashionable and up-to-the minute jewelry and has taken an idea and completely transformed it into unique, wearable and transitional jewelry for the fashion lover and beyond. Eye of JA is comprised of bracelets, rings, necklaces, bustiers, hair pieces, shoulder pieces and more.

Months ago I bought my first Eye of JA hand bracelet (see the “Big Fish” gold image) at Gypsy Warrior in Ridgewood. I was instantly attracted to this hip, classic and new take on the “slave bracelet.”

I have added two more Eye of JA pieces to my collection today, and cannot wait to wear them! One is the brass “Silk Armor” bracelet, and the other is the shoulder piece with topaz Swarovski crystals.

I encourage you to add her pieces to your own personal jewelry collection. Her line is affordable, fashion-forward and versatile. With the drive Janna has I know she is going to take Eye of JA really far.

Make sure to keep an eye out for Janna and Eye of JA in (201) Magazine’s September fashion issue, hitting new stands soon.

"Big Fish" hand bracelet in gold $65

"Silk Armor" hand bracelet in brass $65

Shoulder piece with topaz Swarovski crystals $85

"Sparkle" bauble ring $24

"Not Messin' Around" double-stack ring in silver/gold combo $24

Spring Ahead!

Happy May! If I had to pick one month out of the year to be my favorite, I’d pick May. My birthday is in May, my parent’s wedding anniversary, my dog’s birthday and the month when the flowers really take off and the weather warms up. All in all, I think it’s a feel-good month.

May also encourages me to embark on the spring trends. I can’t wait to fill my wardrobe with pretty pinks, lovely lavenders, barely-there blushes and nudes and fabulous florals. When I think May fashion, I think of ladylike dressing, feminine silhouettes and perfect pastels.

Check out my round-up of great spring finds from H&M, Urban Outfitters and Forever 21, all in Westfield Garden State Plaza.

These looks prove that high style doesn’t have to come at a high price point.

Happy Spring!
